She loves to throw these little anecdotes out periodically (conveniently never naming names cos...it didn't happen). It reminds her idiot followers that she's ONE OF THEM, but she's SEEN behind the curtain of privilege guys, and it's just pompous snobs laughing at all you little folk for not having PhDs. But our plucky little heroine won't give up on her searing political insight of doing some dark bleeping tourism, probably snapping a single tear rolling down her cheek selfie in black and white next to the Auschwitz gate - nobody saw this coming, nobody at all, they were all too busy slurping up my stuffing soup 😥

To be fair to them, I'd need a strong glass of red to cancel out the aftertaste of whatever Jack was cooking
The Holocaust is a serious and very sensitive subject. I have read alot about what those poor people went through. I think she should just shut up now. I don't think there is anything she can add to the subject. She never lived it. So why does she think she needs to add her thoughts to it.

I've been raging about the rise of the Far Right since before Jack was born. We just didn't have Twitter then.

Hmmm, so in 2014 she was the only one who saw the rise of the far right in Europe? I guess no one in the UK had heard of Farage or UKIP then. And no one but her was paying attention to what was happening in Austria or Hungary. And I'm sure the Italians felt totally secure in their newly elected left-wing government after years of Berlusconi. Oh, and let's not forget the waves the AfD made in Germany in 2013. Of course, no political commentator apart from her paid the slightest bit of attention to a far right party who almost made it to parliament in fuckjng Germany!
duck off, you bore. You aren't stupid because you didn't go to uni. You are stupid because you are convinced that you are clever.

Not to mention the little-known French lady Marine Le Pen and her obscure father Jean-Marie Le Pen. Totally inactive in French politics since the 1970s.

Why does she seem to think that you have to go to Auschwitz to acknowledge that fascism exists? Sorry I can't get over this I don't understand.
This type of performative grieving or acknowledgement of the past boils my German piss. You don't need to leave your house to understand fascism. You don't need to tweet about it. There's no discussion. It's documented history. We need to remember, not plan 'pilgrimages'. Auschwitz is a sight of the most horrific things humans can do to humans they perceive as other or lesser. Performative grief tourism (that didn't even happen) helps no one.

Maybe they were laughing because she had such sixth form common room energy despite LEAVING SCHOOL AT 16.

Also maybe her and her dad could pop to the Museum of Barbarism in Cyprus next time they’re over. Lots of atrocities documented there for them both to gnash and wail over.

There’s a difference between asking someone where they went to university, innocently assuming they did, and making fun of someone for not going to university.

I didn’t go and I work/socialise with media types who did. In over 10 years of working in this industry no one has ever ever EVER made fun of me for not going to uni. It’s just too boring a fact to even make fun of. No one cares. Mostly if anything people are impressed I didn’t go and still do the job I do.

Yes I’ve been innocently asked where I went on occasion, and the questioner more often than not looks embarrassed when I bluntly tell them with a smile that I didn’t.

I find it more than a little hard to believe that Jack had this experience multiple times in a few months when I haven’t had it in over a decade with my actual working class upbringing living and working in London.

It just reminds me of that gem of a commenter on the Guardian, I believe it was, years ago that a Frau unearthed recently. About her having a few drinks and being abrasive, loud and obnoxious. Can’t help thinking her version of events is a tad skewed maybe even in her own head. Probably immediately assumed people innocently asking dinner party small talk questions were “attacking” her then went on the defensive. In fact, I’d bet on it.

Everything about this anecdote pisses me off:

* the notion that in 2014, Jack Monroe was a latter-day Cassandra, futilely predicting the rise of fascism

* the fact that she can name three Nazi concentration camps - no wonder they laughed at her! There were so many atrocities committed across the globe in the 20th century. "The Nazis were bad" is literally something a pre-teen could come out with. If she cared that much about global politics, she would be able to discuss other atrocities, too

* the fact that her commitment to global politics has thus far consisted of creating a fake Scottish Twitter account to troll people about independence

* the fact that someone who cares so deeply about global issues is so materialistic and consumes so much

* the fact that someone who cares so deeply about global issues cannot look at food prices with any more nuance than "THE CHEAPER THE BETTER"

Tell us about global politics, Jack. Go on. Give us a laugh.

She has such a chip on her shoulder. They don't come much rougher than me and I've got friends as diverse as a Judge (one of Britain's youngest female Judges too 🔼), hospital doctors and GPs, media lovies in Barnes and TV personalities in Manchester. I know millionaires and more. They are real friends and accept that the class I was born into was not a choice, they accept me for who I am.

Not one of them makes fun of me or my accent. I have seen all of them pissed and non of them would be so crass or insulting as to do so. They are my friends and wouldn't be if they acted as she says hers do.

However, I didn't go to a Grammar school, I didn't take O'levels I took CSEs. It didn't stop me from educating myself with further education which eventually led me to university. It took hard work and perseverance. They might have had an easier ride, but they never make me feel less than them because I'm not.

Perhaps, just perhaps, she was not liked and made a butt of their jokes and comments because she is not likeable. Perhaps they just didn't like her as a person, nothing to do with her back story.

Mind you, if they had eaten her food at the parties, can you blame them for taking a dislike to her?

Sorry for the diatribe, she is just getting on my thruppenies at the moment.

She has left a bad taste in my mouth........ literally.

They were probably being sarky because she was probably being a mouth piece and they wanted to quieten her down so they asked that question.

I really doubt they actually really cared.

Does it count when you've bought it out of money other people have given you though because apparently, you're only poor when it's you're own money you're low on....... Or something.
Suppose if it’s bought with somebody else’s money it can be classed as a gift? Maybe this is how she justifies all the expensive stuff ?

Well it kind of is our business. In a “head over heart” way, we all pay our taxes and the winter fuel payments are given to those who need it, by the Government, from our taxes. But in a “heart over head” way, the overwhelming amount of followers of this thread are kind, caring, genuine people and that’s why there was outrage over this. I’m an empathetic person by nature so that woman has been on my mind a lot over the last couple of days.

Jack’s message is charming as always 🙄 she’s maybe in the huff because she’s been forced to hand the cash back. And I hope she saw Stacey Dooley’s tweet, not that I suppose she cares but she doesn’t seem to have faced much in the way of consequences so it would be satisfying to think she felt even a twinge if guilt. Who am I kidding 🤦‍♀️

All this talk of scathing dinner parties is making me imagine R Jackie on Come Dine With Me. She has an in at Channel 4, this fantasy could become a reality!
