Things that frightened you as a child

Love this thread 😂 I’m a 90’s kid so I remember most of the stuff mentioned!

I must have been a strange kid, loved ghosts, witches and vampires but was terrified of puppets!

The Riddlers scared the living dayligts out of me, as did Mr Punch 😬 there was an episide of Luther a few years back which featured a serial killer in a Mr Punch mask - not ashamed to admit I slept with the light on after watching that!

The Metz - Beware of the Judderman advert. Whom I initially thought was that Frost man from the ITV weather.
OMG! I hated him 😱 I remember my Mum buying some Metz and being terrified he was going to appear in our house!

I also have an irrational fear of drowning, can’t handle having my head under water!

I was very specifically terrified of the noise the landline makes when you don't hang up properly. That high pitched siren sound! I used to have to get someone else to hang up the phone if that started playing because I was too scared to get close to the phone 🙄

Oh, and the story of Bluebeard who would kill his wives and lock the bodies in a room with his other dead wives. I used to lock the book in the bathroom every night 😂

This advert is really creepy, and although it wasn’t about when I was a child, I’m sure it would have literally petrified me!!...
And, I’m pretty sure there are many kids who have seen this advert and had nightmares..😱

There was a 999 where a girl got her hair stuck in a swimming pool filter/pump in a leisure centre, I remember the life guard saying “I was taking 2 breaths one for me and one for her”. Haven’t let my kids swim with their hair down ever!

And London’s Burning! There was an episode where a boy kicked a football into a substation and his sister went to get it. I seem to vaguely remember seeing the “body” and smoke. Terrifying.
I remember the swimming pool one! I always had very long hair as a child and I was tit scared of swimming close to a pump

I was terrified of loads as a kid. My sibling was the tough ballsy one and I was the wimp.

The flying dog in never ending story.

The rain (!) I would worry it wouldn't stop and we would all be flooded. I used to write notes to God asking him to stop the rain!

Car or house alarms, I had a fear they would never stop. I still actually have this now if our house alarm plays up in a power cut.

Our family cat attempting to come and sit on my knee. I was scared she would do that thing where they pad around for ages before sitting down and she would hurt me. Kid you not, if she jumped on the sofa i would grab a cushion as quick as a flash to protect myself 🤣

Car washes, I thought they would malfunction and I would be stuck in there forever.

Walking over bridges.

The millennium. Thought we were all gonna die.

The video for stay by Shakespeare sisters.

I had a lot of moments as a kid where I thought if I did something, nothing bad woulf happen. So I would make myself tell my parents they were the best, tidy my room etc.
Oh that Shakespeare Sisters video scared me to bits. I'd burst into tears if it came on tv.

The Blair witch was the first scary film I watched and now I’m terrified of trees at night. 😂 it sounds so stupid and ridiculous but seriously, I don’t mind them in daylight but once the sun goes down it’s a no from me.

I about 9 when that came out and I remember a boy in my class at school called Aaron read out a part of his imaginary writing story and it was inspired by that film. It was called The Barbie Witch project.

I’ll never forget the part where his characters were going around the woods and they saw something scary, he read out “oh no, what’s that, it’s some kind of sex machine!!”.

You can assume that no tv or film genres were off limits for him in his household.

Ths unsolved mysteries theme tune. Used to watch it late at night on cable tv without my parents knowledge.

The music (and the credit graphics) used to terrify me and now the Netflix reboot has the same music!!

My uncle told me about a film where a gangster stabs someone in the face with a biro - can’t remember what it was called now, maybe Casino?

Anyway he knew someone when he was younger who got a call to come and pick his son up from school as he’d stabbed another child with a biro! He told my uncle that he let his kids watch those films cos “it’s what they like” 😳
