Things that frightened you as a child

When I was a kid, I used to walk through this small park that had rows of trees. In the winter time, when the trees had lost their leaves, the trunks were knobbly and the branches were spindlely, to me they resembled witches and evil spirits. I used to be terrified walking through that park, even if I was acompanied by someone.

I was a MASSIVE scaredy cat as a kid, I finally grew out of it in my early twenties 😂 Here are some of mine:

- I don't care if anyone tells me they're meant to be funny but I completely blame The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episodes for a lot of my fears. Some of them are tit scary!! The zombie one, the one with the gremlin on the side of the bus carrying Flanders severed head, the one where the Pierce Brosnan house takes over, the one where they're eating the school kids in the cafeteria, the one where the gas turns them inside out, the one where Groundskeeper Willy kills them in their sleep.... I could go on and on.

- The Witches film. For some reason, they put it on as an end-of-term "treat", and I cried so hard the teacher had to take me out of the room and I remember months later I saw The Witches book in a National Trust gift shop and had a breakdown again lol.

- Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids, especially the story where the boy that never went to bed when his parents told him got his eyelids stitched open permanently as punishment. Watching this as a kid who consistently had trouble sleeping was awful, I thought some grim reaper was going to come to me in the night to stitch my eyes open.

- Watership Down and Animal Farm and Fox and the Hound were traumatising for me. Especially that beastly rabbit covered in blood.

- What was the sequel to Life on Mars called with the David Bowie clown running towards the camera in it? Life on Mars itself was pretty scary too with the little girl and the clown technical difficulties sign.... 😨

My uncle told me about a film where a gangster stabs someone in the face with a biro - can’t remember what it was called now, maybe Casino?

Anyway he knew someone when he was younger who got a call to come and pick his son up from school as he’d stabbed another child with a biro! He told my uncle that he let his kids watch those films cos “it’s what they like” 😳
One of my cousin’s was very much the same. We’d walk to school together and I’d go to call on her and she’d be watching Freddy Kruger films in the morning.

Chucky 😫 when I was about 5 I had a dream he was chasing me down the stairs and when I woke up I was actually at the bottom of the stairs in the pitch dark!

Bridges over roads

When in the car with my grandparents they would always say “DUCK” everytime we went under a bridge

I took it far too seriously and honestly thought if I didn’t duck I would get decapitated 😩

I was also traumatised by a scene in midsummer murders I saw when I was young of someone breaking into a house and shooting someone as they slept. Still makes me feel uneasy now 😅

Not as a child but .. I watched an episode of Crimewatch ... the reconstructions are too real... one episode there was a young girl walking and talking to her boyfriend on her mobile.... and she was pulled into an alley and raped and it was a terrifying recon of the event, I was terrified. Poor boyfriend on the other end of the phone trying to get to her. 😢 Same episode they did another reconstruction about an elderly lady burnt to death in her bed in a care home. Again.... bleeping terrifying !! Haven’t been able to watch since.

I blame crime watch for why I am scared of the dark!! I can't have lights on and curtains open if its dark as I know anyone can see straight through. I will not go out in the dark alone, not even in my own garden or to put something in the wheelie bins 😬😅

My mum used to let me watch casualty with her on Saturday nights when I was about 8. There was one episode where someone stole a car that had a kid in the back and from then on I was terrified of being left in the car. If my mum got out to pay for petrol, or to put a letter in the letterbox, I’d have to get out too because I was convinced there was a real chance of someone taking the car with me in it 😂

The sound when someone would get a question wrong on who wants to be a millionaire with that aggressive green flashing 😩

I was obsessed with the show when I was a kid but used to cower behind the couch when this happened! 😂

oh god you’ve unearthed a fear of mine I locked away 🤣

I think it was also casualty or holby city. I watched an episode with my mum when I was younger
Someone put open gas cylinders in the boot of someone’s car in the hospital car park and when they started the car it blew up

It was terrifying 😬

Does anyone remember the advert about looking both ways when crossing the road. A young boy crosses and a car sort of just appears from the road? Like it just grows from the tarmac.
That terrified me as a kid 🤮😭

My mum stopped letting me watch casualty after that!
