The Dowager

Chatty Member
I know we have serious issues to discuss in terms of behaviour, but has anyone seen the Nars tinted moisturiser she's advertising? I had a snout because I was confused by her saying her shade was 'Groenland', and discovered that they've done that thing of naming shades after locations, much like Nyx. However, the shades list has properly made me chuckle. Locations include:

St Moritz
Sydney
Havana
Marrakech
Mykonos

and Norwich :ROFLMAO: Maybe it's something to do with the Chapman sisters, maybe it's for another Norfolk, but honestly its inclusion on this last is brilliant.

For all her declarations of being a girl's girl I often don't the impression she is comfortable around other women. This then comes across in some of her ITB interviews. Arms crossed defensively, and a bit hostile, not listening, competitive.
I have never seen Lisa Eldridge 'off' with another woman. For eg her tutorials with Alexa Chung (amongst others) are a delight.

Welcome and I'm really glad you felt welcome to post here. This thread is such a lovely group of thoughtful, incisive, compassionate and funny women.

I only got my ASD DX 2 years ago aged 57 after a lifetime of struggle and misunderstandings. I tie myself in knots trying not to be too blunt but still stuff slips out and I'm bemused why people feel hurt.
I'd like to connect somehow out of this group. I am on IG. As I don't know many women who have been diagnosed late like myself. If you feel comfortable with that please let me know and I can give you my IG tag or I am fairly easy to find tbh.

She blocked you? From
Insta?
Yes.
Welcome!
Nobody here thought your comment was remotely rude. Sali didn't have to reply. Her hair is obviously a touchy subject at the moment.
By the way if you are banned from GTL please have a good look around the different threads on Tattle for interesting topics (as well as this one obviously).
There are skincare and makeup ones too.
It is not all the poisonous nest of vipers Sali would have people believe but on the whole very supportive and friendly.
Thanks and I will have a look at other content. Thanks. :)

So @clondon you were banned from GTL?
Well that puts paid to the myth Sali never reads here - 'it would finish me {{{dramatic shudder}}}'
She obviously does and is highly pissed off there are still Tattlers there. I presume that is at the root cause of her latest outbursts. But I thought she knew that already?
Yup I was but its all good and the ban was less the comments in GTL and more my comments here on Tattle.

Who will play clondon in the My Troll Hell sequel? What name will Sali come up with this time?
No-one (me taking everything literally...) She knows my name, I doubt she will comment much on it. I have potentially been unkind myself but I genuinely have an issue with those that can't accept neurodiversity. Some of my posts if she choose to publish them wouldn't go down well but I'm just a bit done with always saying sorry for being autistic. I also hope I am accepted here on Tattle.

To the aspiring writer who posted about the poor quality of Sali's journalism. This is what brings me here to the viper's nest also. I suppose I am an ex Sali groupie. I consumed a lot of Sali stuff and started noticing some of her career's "advice" regarding journalism was extremely dodgy and parts of her story just didn't add up. I noticed her column was becoming infuriatingly dull week-on-week. I attended one of her events where a young woman asked about how to get into journalism. Her answer involved relating her own backstory as a teenage runaway who was "always going to be a journalist" and getting a job at Loaded magazine because she tidied the accessories cupboard while the male staff were out for a boozy lunch. It was then I realised Sali was actually not a journalist. She is somebody born in a particularly lucky era where you could turn up at the doors of a media company and get a job. Her "advice" was basically, be like me, don't be boring or studious, don't get exams, leave school early, ingratiate yourself to all men especially older men at every opportunity and be the coolest girl around. So this, fellow sewer dwellers, is how one lands a Guardian column.
I think it's a myth that there was a time when you could 'turn up at the doors of a media company and get a job'. Then, as now, a lot depended on connections and I don't think SH was any exception. Her teenage runaway backstory used to include her staying in London with an uncle who ran clubs and hung out with Leigh Bowery - so pretty well connected on the London scene. Whether that led to an introduction or just how she came to know that there was an opening... At the very least you needed to know which door to turn up at when.

God SHE really is vile. That poor Liv didn’t say anything bad at all, it was a purely neutral comment and yet she got absolutely chewed out for it. Fuck Sali.

I feel really angry that Sali bullied an autistic woman into apologising for being autistic on the GTL thread.

saying someone’s hair looks brassy blonde on a thread about GREY hair, isn’t super rude. It’s an observation.

Sali has made far, far ruder comments!

the world is hard enough to navigate if you are autistic without being hounded for not realising it was an ego stroking thread.

Is it true that Sali isn’t a fan of Lisa Eldridge?
There does seem to be something odd there going back ages. And often more what she doesn't say or do. Silly things. Eg at the back of Sali's book Pretty Honest she had a long list of beauty and makeup specialists to watch on YT - no Lisa - who many would consider THE best for online tutorials.
Sali studiously ignores all the requests for Lisa to be a subject on In The Bathroom - never ever replies to any comments mentioning L though will to other suggestions.
She has never reviewed Lisa's products which is wierd. The only comment I've seen is in reply to a direct question on IG about the lipsticks - an icy 'I have heard good things about them'. Not the usual 'Yes! LOVE. I have them all'.
After a beauty event years ago Sali went to with lots of other beauty people, someone on Get The Look asked her excitedly 'was Lisa Eldridge there? I love her - what is she like?'. Sali's reply 'Lisa was there'.
Recently (and I can't remember the context and in answer to a query) Sali said Lisa wasn't a beauty writer but a makeup artist.
I'm sure there are other examples.

So she has never said or done anything terrible - it is just wierd. Sali always seems so odd when Lisa is mentioned when she can be so gushing about others in the same industry.

Here is the piece if anyone wants to read it

Thank you for saving me the trouble.

Trademark shirty tone 😴

As they multiplied slowly and steadily, mostly in the less visible undergrowth
Sounds like she's talking about her knicker area!

Lightening isn’t just a question of bleaching, as anyone who has glanced at their gross nicotine yellow, freshly-peroxided hair and become panic-stricken and/or bilious, can attest
Shade to CH?

Almost all bleached hair needs a toner to eliminate brassiness and achieve a flattering cool shade
Cool isn't flattering to all

Always tip toeing a tightrope between yellow and blue
That would be ... green?

There was a passive aggressive swipe at people who dared suggest she switch up her makeup. She made it clear she won't be wearing lilac (!) and will be sticking to the same clothes and colours baby poo and camel dung
Fixed for you.

If someone sprayed me with a facial mist while I was in labour I would have punched them.
I was my friend's birth partner. She packed the Avene thermal water and I was supposed to mist her when necessary. I was so nervous I didn't spray lightly, instead I placed the can too close and squirted most of it into her eyes. She took the can away mid push. I was not harmed. 😂

I checked out the Mumsnark thread and really we are saying nothing worse!

Interestingly when I Googled a thread came up from there from years ago "Crap that Sali Hughes recommended in the Guardian " plus ça change!

I saw that and as a fellow autistic woman I felt for her.

Computer and phone screen colour renditions vary so much, why did Hughes get so butthurt about it all? Hughes is a f-ing thinskinned bitch - she can dish it out but she can't take it.

I’m sure I’ve said quite a few positive things and I don’t think I’ve ever been deleted. I don’t hate her, I just wanted somewhere to discuss the influencer dynamic and because I was uncomfortable with some of the interactions I saw (Dawn O’Porter, Esther Walker etc) post Friday rant and knew that it wasn’t something that was tolerated as discussion directly in her / other influencers feeds.

It’s such a modern and evolving dynamic (online) that not being able to discuss it is crazy (and worrying).

First post on the Sali forum! I asked a pretty innocuous question about the hair which she answered and then a few days later I got blocked! Blimey! I was wracking my brain as to why she took offence, still can’t work it out. I feel all is not well on planet Sal.

I listened to Elizabeth Day’s ‘How to Fail’ podcast with Graham Norton today and in the last 8 minutes he gives his point of view on criticism and how he handles it - he seems very balanced with it and understands that he’s not going to be to everyone’s taste. He makes an interesting point about writers not taking criticism well, probably because writing is a solitary and individual thing by its nature.

In this instance Sali has used her own image and experience (again) for a paid story (regardless of whether she was going to change her hair or not) and doesn’t want to accept any sort of commentary apart from praise. What a load of absolute bollocks … she CHOSE to put this out there, people will have opinions (and old thread title there I think).

It must be exhausting indeed.

Olaplex will be her friend.
