A few mitherings whilst I've (momentarily) caught up:

If the breeder really was treating Content's poor parents / other dogs badly, surely they should be reported somewhere?

The truth is that breeding guidelines are just that, guidelines. Enforceable action against those who meddle with DNA/ genetics despite not knowing what they are doing and forcing their dogs to produce litter after litter is, unless the dogs are openly kept in filthy conditions, not going to happen. Breeding obviously takes place behind closed doors and in any ‘ space’ a human sees fit. Kennel Club does place limits on the frequency of litters, 3 I think, and from what I remember enforces at least a 1 year rest between litters but it is not legally enforceable unless a breeding contract is in place and even then chasing a breeding contract is very expensive.

Basic care legislation for all animals is incredibly basic, down to food, water, basic vet care and shelter ( even the shelter part imho is far too low). Content, will be one of millions of dogs who have been bred due to the misguided notion that any dog genes mixed with a poodle makes them hypoallergenic ( which is absolute rubbish). She will be a highly intelligent, hugely energetic dog who absolutely will not be having her ethical needs met by Guest’s chaotic lifestyle, baring in mind unless the dog exhibits behaviours which upset others like constant barking/ biting the dogs almost never get removed/ rehomed due to a lack of exercise or mental stimulation. The prices the backyard fiddlers of DNA charge for the animals and those who buy them perpetuate a canine time bomb the likes we are already seeing with poorly bred dogs who cannot breathe, walk or are so poorly socialised they end up attacking children/ their ‘owners’.

As humans we seem to pat ourselves on the back for animal welfare standards, truth is unless the dog is literally starved, beaten in the street in front of witnesses with cameras successful prosecution for animal welfare issues around breeding is fairly unusual.

Sorry don’t know where this will land but as someone who has had numerous rescue spaniels, mongrels and labradors this subject really upsets me… right will stop being a monologuing PIA. Telling myself to duck off

Iwas stroking the most gorgeous silky eared dog in the street the other day. Her new human told me she was age 8 and recently adopted after a life of puppy breeding on a ‘farm’. The saddest eyes and desperate for affection. I got home and wept.
