Even if the landlord wouldn't agree to release her, she'd only be liable for the rent until a new tenant could be found. But it's extremely unlikely that the 2 year lease didn't have a break clause.
And remember that the "my rent takes up all my salary!" thing is deeply disingenuous - she chose what level of salary to pay herself from her limited company, and will have taken vastly more as dividends. Now that she's back to being a sole trader she can legitimately claim that she doesn't have any salary at all!
