Dealing with Anxiety

Glad to find this thread, I am struggling at the moment with my anxiety…

Things are going so well in my life I have a promotion, I’m saving money, I’m fitter and most importantly am seeing a lovely guy. Here’s the problem, I’ve been single for 11 years and have not found one decent guy in that time. My heart has been chewed out and spat on and let me tell you this guy is too good to be true.

I’m completely wracked with anxiety mainly surrounding him, thinking it’ll all go wrong. I don’t think I could bounce back from that heartache well.

Anyone experienced similar? Xx

Sorry to hear that you're feeling like this. I'm in a similar boat to your but haven't been single for quite as long. On one hand I haven't known this guy for that long, so I feel that surely if it does go wrong it shouldn't take long to get over, but I owing he exists it terrifies me that it might not develop.

Feel on top of the world when I'm with him but as soon as he leaves the anxiety hits again and sticks around even if he's given me nothing but reasons to think he likes me.

Sorry, I have no useful advice, but you're not alone in feeling like this. X

Thank you it really is nice to just talk to someone who knows how it feels! I get attached very quickly and with mydepression too I find little knock backs catastrophic right now. I’m terrified all the time at the moment!! Sending love x

My anxiety has massively flared up the over the past days. I’m moving out my current house share (rent is bills included) to a 2 bedroom house with one of my current housemates- so will be paying more and I can’t budget it for tit. But I’m worried I’ve made the wrong choice and the house is too small for us? Even though my housemate is excited for it.

I like 2 boys at the moment and one I had to block because it was toxic as tit. And the other boy I like I’m still talking/seeing as we agreed to be friends because he’s moving 2 hours away from me soon.

And I’m just anxious all around!

Also flare up of anxiety currently. Mainly around my children being a good enough parent. Them having friends, growing up to be good people. Me affecting that, other parents not liking me.

This often leads to intrusive thoughts for me. Mainly things going wrong. And these play out in my head over and over.

As somebody struggling too feel free not take my advice. I find decisions hard too. Write down all of your concerns are the practical concerns or emotional fear of consequences. Can you not make the budget work or find it hard to budget. Your intuition is usually a good thing to go with if very stuck.

Does anyone experience bad morning panic attacks? I don't know why, but I've started having panic attacks when I wake up, before I even get out of bed. It feels like an adrenaline rush (the negative kind) with hot+cold flushes, shaking, rapid shallow breathing...all the panic symptoms. It's hard to know what to do when it comes out of nowhere like that.

Me. The minute I wake up, reality hits me like a ton of bricks.
The panic attacks suck. I have health anxiety but not just me, I worry about my family. Like I think I will lose everyone I love. I get intrusive thoughts about symptoms appearing. Its awful.
On my 2nd day of sertraline and waiting for CBT. Its rough.

Sorry you're feeling bad as well @Milktray. ❤ It's hard to cope with that level of anxiety. I relate to the worries about family too, especially since my mother had some health issues a few years ago. I really hope the sertraline & CBT combo helps you. Also hope that the waiting list isn't too long!

I had such a bad few hours of anxiety today, I came off Sertraline a few months ago and have been functioning relatively well off it but today I had to go to bed as it was the only place I felt safe. It was really scary, I think I need some counselling again.

in the mean time can anyone recommend any books or podcasts or anything on anxiety could help me to understand it better please? Thank you x

I’m sorry to hear you’re going through a hard time. Withdrawal from the meds may still be a factor here. Apparently the symptoms of withdrawal can mirror symptoms of anxiety. The cruel irony of it.

Honestly, I think if you’re going through an anxious spell then you’re better off staying away from any anxiety related media! Personally, such things tend to make me feel worse. It can feel entirely overwhelming to be given so much information and there are so many different solutions, each one coming from someone with their own personal experience or professional bias. I find a source of distraction far preferable. When you’re out of this low spell again, then seek the education. But for now I would seek comfort. That is just my two cents.

I love listening to the off menu podcast. It’s warm and witty, engaging and great guests. I take it on my walks. It helps to move. Keep body and brain active. If that’s not an option for you, then more indoor activities like colouring books, jigsaws, any kinds of crafts can be helpful.

Thank you so much for your reply, I think you’re right about the withdrawal symptoms. I’ve also worked out that it was also potentially linked to a bad shift I had on Saturday so I’m just being kind to myself and seeking comfort like you suggested.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the off menu podcast so I’ll give that a go. My therapist ghosted me is a good one too!

I always go back to the first few pages of the book Dare by Barry McDonagh. It really flipped a switch in my brain when I first read it last December. I still get anxiety on a regular basis, especially if I am tired of if I haven’t been eating well, but I deal with it way better than before. Highly recommend!

Not coping. :( I need sleep to feel less anxious, but can't sleep because I'm too anxious. Health anxiety is through the roof as well. Right now I'm having these muscle twitches in my legs (probably tiredness) and I'm thinking omg what's that?

I get the muscle twitches when I’m over tired so it’s probably due to your lack of sleep.

Not sleeping is a viscous circle as you go to bed panicking you won’t be able to sleep again and it makes it worse.

Try taking magnesium before bed, eating a bananas for the potassium and stay hydrated with enough salt in your diet. Great for muscle spasms.

Can anyone recommend anything for travel anxiety? I am totally fine if I'm driving my own car but I'm a nightmare when I'm a passenger. I don't get motion sickness however when I am a passenger my anxiety is so bad that I get myself in a right state and end up feeling super nauseous. My stomach will be in a knot all day leading up to the travel then I will get sweaty palms and just not be able to relax the entire time. I always panic that I'll be sick in the car. I always take a plastic bag with me just in case but it doesn't seem to relieve how I feel.

We have a 45 min journey in a mini bus next week and I am DREADING it :(

I’m back lol my anxiety is round my ex who recently came back into my life about a week. We had frequent communication (I would say fell into bad habits- kinda acting boyfriend and girlfriend) . He’s told me he’s struggling with his mental health and got a lot going on atm- he had a “weird day” on Monday and didn’t respond to any of messages on Monday or Tuesday. I’ve decided to not message over the past 3 days until my anxiety for the better of me.
I’ve rang him- went to voicemail. I’ve texted on WhatsApp ( so I can see the blue ticks!) and all I can think about is what if he’s harmed himself etc. I couldn’t bear the thought if he has…
I’m full of anxiety and I don’t know where he lives to do a wellness check (he’s currently living with a mate!)….my therapist has tried to reassure me that he’s probs just ghosting me/taking time out from life as he’s done this previously in May lol ignoring people and then coming back…

any tips on how to calm my mind? X
