I don't have any tattoos but if I did it would be from an Emily Dickinson book of poetry and would be a feather with the word Hope entwined.

I have read In Order To Live by Yeonmi Park in a day today. It is her true life account of life in North Korea, her escape and then her life after. It is both harrowing and inspirational. I cried tears both at her hard moments but also at her best ones.

As an aside. We are all born innocent. But so much depends on which bit of land you had the fortune or misfortune to be born on. Our countries are not without their faults, but Lord knows we have our freedoms.

Young Mungo directly follows the end of Shuggie Bain so it's early 90s. It talks about specific football matches which Im sure are 1992 maybe?

I adored it. I loved Shuggie too. I know its v much marmite on this thread but his writing is so beautiful but also haunting.

I know people found Shuggie bleak but for me the overall theme throughout the book was love? Children grow up in households like Shuggies every day. Mothers and Fathers struggle like Agnes every day. Its closer to reality than fantasy. Even in 2023.

Loved Mungo though and I cant remember just how many threads ago but I know myself and other posters had sevea in depth conversations about it.

I would eagerly await his next novel, thats for sure.

This! I read all sorts of books, I’m just stuck in this “incomprehensible classics” era for right now, but trust me, I’ll be picking up The Housemaid as soon as I have these dusty old men out of my hair. I just wanted to share my despair lol

I’ve just been looking at my Goodreads and I’m currently on my 18th book of the year. This time last year I’d only read 6 and the year before was 7. And luckily in the 18 so far this year, I’ve only had 2 that I didn’t really enjoy (All The Missing Girls and Brave New World). Hopefully the rest of 2023 continues like this!

I'm hoping to finish A Man Called Ove today so I may start The Housemaid tomorrow, especially as it's the book club choice. It gives me great joy to start a new book on the first of the month

i don’t own a kindle and have never read a book on one purely physical books for me (with at least one bookcase in most rooms of my house) but i can accept the benefits of a kindle for making space more than anything!

i’ve just started a town called solace by mary lawson and am really loving it so far. if you like anne patchett or anne tyler i would hugely recommend.

Same, I just can't get on board with e-books, I just want to hold the book in my hand. And other things can be got rid of to make more space for books. Always room for more books. Other things don't matter as much as books.

Guys I've gone nuts this month with book buying...over £250 I've filled an entire bookcase and I have 27 books that I can't fit anywhere and 9 more on the way (to explain, I have an obsessive online shopping addiction - I was really bad with clothes last year and my NY resolution was so sort my shit out. I did really well in January but this month books have been my new obsession. I need to reign it in now ).

Eeep. I would love to see a list of photo of all you have bought.

Shopping addictions are real though. Go easy on yourself.

If li'd just like to say that since my January 16th blip I have not bought any books this year. Not a single one.

I don't know what is wrong with me.

I got £40 shopping vouchers from work for Christmas, and I went to The Works the other day.

I don't think I really need to explain how the rest of the day went.

But as it was shopping vouchers it doesn't count as spending real money.

Thank you it was only tongue in cheek, I’m in awe of those who can read the heavier classics. I read to escape my thoughts and I find my mind wanders often if the book doesn’t quickly pull me in and perhaps have a degree of relatability. I’ve read Jane eyre/p&p, I have Mansfield park, Emma and Vanity Fair in the tbr pile. It was really a compliment to those with the dedication to do so, but they’re on my bucket list along with learning how to complete cryptic crosswords

I have this on my Kindle! I think they should have changed the design/font on the cover as I always read it as a fucker in the dark
