I haven’t been following it closely but heard enough from Owen Paterson and his daughter acting so hard done by on his measly MP salary in the ‘cruel world of politics’.

The thing is, it is happening on all sides - including the Liberal Democrat, Labour and SNP benches. The whole system needs a through overhaul by an independent body. If you choose to become an MP (no one forces you to be one), then your primary function is to fulfil the objectives of that role. If you don't like the salary on offer to become an MP, then don't stand to become an MP. After dinner speeches, etc,etc should only be carried out if it does not impact on the role of an MP. Plus any such activities should be made mandatory to declare.
Massively unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't oppose giving a pay rise to MPs on the condition they were full time MPs and blocked from taking on other work. I find it disheartening when an MP is campaigning and one of their things is that they will do it full time 
They do have an important job to do, but their pay is less than many NHS or local council chief executive's earn so I can't get all outraged over if it was increased in line with what other people with similar levels of responsibility in the public sector get paid, and it would cost peanuts in the grand scheme. The head of my council gets 190k and MPs get 82k.

I dont know, if you cant live on 82,000 a year then they need to budget properly. I find it laughable that MPs earning that amount are telling the poor & vulnerable they can live on £60 a day.

Benefits are a joke of a safety net. Some people are expected to live of about £60 a week if under 25 or £74 if you're 25+. As if it's any cheaper being younger. It's only manageable if you're entitled to several top up benefits and those that fall through the cracks without savings or support elsewhere are ducked.

The benefit system is a joke. This government dont care about the poor or vulnerable, honestly I don't even think that they think about people like that.
Of course they wouldn't get life on benefits most of them a very wealthy ,One of the funniest things I ever saw was years ago Michael Portillo taking part in a benefits swap where he swapped lives with a single working mum from Liverpool that was an eye opener for him . I'm sure he never gave her a second thought once he returned to his cushy life ,but she was good enough to bump up his profile while it lasted.
I was literally just speaking to someone else saying how we really should not have MPs on an 82k a year, most of em are millionaires telling everyone else how they should live and what they are entitled too. Back in the day, the labour party was full of actual hard working people that were like me and you that did normal every day jobs. Now its made up of people with money who dont really care about the people and see it more as a day job.. That Zarah Sultana seems alright, I follow her on insta and she speaks facts all the time but I feel she gets ignored a lot. I read today Universal Credit has made 3.6 million families worse off since they removed the £20 a week cut. That's too many people.
That's right Labour was always known as the working mans party the Conservatives were always middle /upper class that never got their hands dirty a day in their life ,but now it's hard to tell the difference. I do feel for those families on UC not all are sitting about scrounging there's plenty of working poor out there I think many will have a very bleak Christmas this year not only through lack of gifts but just trying to heat their homes or put food on the table something the Gov ministers take for granted.
im not from the UK either but i know being a tory means supporting the conservative right-wing party. typically refers to upper-class white individuals who haven't had to struggle for anything in life. i may be over-simplifying it but that's just how i understand it as a non-UK person

Another aussie here with loads of English family (go the geordies!) the torys are equivalent to our Liberal party, v wealthy white private schooling, tax dodging type.
no - it has nothing to do with race. In the Uk there used to be 2 parties, the Whigs and the Tories. The whigs no longer exist, the two major parties are Labour and Conservative, the Conservatives are an evolution of the Tories. Key party differences are that Labour believe in a rolling out of the state (e.g more public welfare, but that also means higher taxation), whereas the conservatives are more about economic stimulation, capitalism, a meritocracy. Online many younger people who don’t really understand politics think labour = good and Tory = mean and nasty. But this is untrue - political opinions should always be formed from manifesto/ policy education and not teenagers in TikTok.
people also need to remember that conservative supporters are not the very wealthy 1%. In fact they are the majority considering we currently have a conservative government - they couldn’t have won the election if only the 1% voted for them - that’s not how our election system works.

I think the majority of politicians whatever their political party are corrupt and generally tell bare face lies and make promises they can’t keep, so they’re all as bad as each other and don’t care as they’re being paid a tit tone for the privilege.
also do Northern Ireland, similarly to Scotland and Wales have their own countries party, as most people in wales and scotland (not all) vote for their own countries parties therefor Olivia wouldn’t be a tory, like it would be stupid for her and her family to vote for the conservative party as Boris really only cares about England
I’m not going to lie, in secondary school/sixth form, the tories in my year were massive witches that judged people and held all the big parties that left certain people out. It just gave off a horrible vibe. They were also the ones with questionable views in economics, sociology etc. All my friends personally don’t lack compassion and empathy and I do think your political views reflect that and for a lot of people it comes through in their character.
