I love this thread! I am more of a lurker on this site but I had to comment here.
I don’t think mine is scary, but I think we have a ghost attached to our family. Nothing happened before my son was born (he is my second), then I remember seeing The Boy for the first time and when I was up one night feeding my baby son. I just saw a young boy peeking round the corner of the door frame watching me with my son. I was never scared of him, and he never did anything but just watch us, He then would come fairly often, maybe a few times a week and would always be peering round the door frame, once I saw him watching from the stairs, but again just peeking through the banister. I don’t know why but I always called him Tom, it’s just what I instinctively named him. He looks like a working class boy from the early 1900s (going by clothes), really hard to explain but I see him but I don’t at the same time. I can tell he isn’t a living being if that makes sense.
one day he stopped coming to visit, and then about a year later we moved out of the city we lived in and completely relocated. Then one day, I was on my own in the house- the kids in school and hubby at work, and I just suddenly knew he was there. I can’t explain it, it just suddenly popped in to my head that he was upstairs and was here to visit. I have occasionally seen him run from the kid’s bedroom to ours but only out of the corner of my eye. Last year was a really stressful year for us and he came a lot more then. So maybe he is a protective/comforting spirit? Who knows. But every now and again it will just pop in to my head and I think ‘oh! Tom’s here!’ For no reason. My oldest two have occasionally talked about someone else being in their room but they have never been frightened. Hubby is a complete skeptic and has never seen or sensed anything!
My great grandfather was a medium and my dad has inherited this gift for sure. There are times where we have visited places and he won’t return because spirits have tried to communicate with him and he will not indulge it at all!

When I was a kid I used to go to my Auntie's house during the school holidays where she looked after me. When I was 10 I was sitting in the front room with my aunt when I saw my grandmother walk past the window towards the front door. My Aunt jumped up and went to the door. She came back into the front room and I said 'Is Nana here?' to which my Aunt said 'You saw her to?' .... My Nana had died a couple of months previously.

I don’t like my house and it doesn’t like me either. Every time I try to do any work here, it resists. Nothing is ever straightforward. I’m happy here but it’s not the house for me.

I don’t think it’s ghosts though it’s an old house that has had some interesting previous owners.

I read up on the first occupants after tracing them in old Post Office files. They were the headmaster and matron of a reform school for girls. Not a couple (on paper), just co-workers.

I’ve met a guy who grew up here and is now elderly. He wrote to me and asked to visit and see his old house. When he did come he showed me where his aunt died 😂

The previous owner to me is a well known academic who is in the news now and again with their studies. The one before that I’ve met at the church.

Another owner was a reasonably famous artist (there are several websites of his works). There’s a false wall on the top floor and it’s coming down soon, I’m hoping to find an original painting behind it, sell it and retire on the proceeds… one can dream.

The energy here is heavy, that’s how I’d describe it.

Years ago I was working with a new girl in Sheffield city centre. She has been finding work difficult and struggling in her role.
In the midst of all the traffic, noise and fumes, I could suddenly smell an overpowering scent of lavender. I wasn’t aware that it was lavender until she asked if I could smell it too, which I could. It was really heady and strong. So then she told me: her grandmother had worn lavender and sometimes when she was down she would smell the scent and feel comforted that her grandmother was watching over her🥰
There was no explanation for it, we were in a busy, noisy and smelly concrete jungle and it vanished as soon as it came. I also found it comforting ❤

When I was about 16 or so, we had a family friend who was quite ill and lived alone with no family. She had 2 cats and was always worried what would happen to them when she died - my mum said not to worry and we would take the cats in (we already had one of our own).

Anyway, she passed away and we adopted the cats. About a week or so later, I was home alone in the evening sitting at my computer desk with my bedroom door open. Two of the cats were asleep on my bed behind me, and one was lying down on the landing outside my room. There were no windows or anything open in the house but suddenly I felt this rush of cold. The landing light started flickering off and on again, all the cats got up and starting miawing (but more of like a strange crying almost howling noise) on the landing.

Then suddenly it just stopped. The light came back on and the cats went back to doing what they were before. I am sure it was our family friend coming to check in on the cats and telling them it was all okay.

Hello everyone,

Somehow a thread on vile Jodie Marsh brought me here!

I live close by to Boleskine House, notable for its once owner Aleister Crowley. He performed many rituals there: the most talked about I won't mention by name here.

Ok, so I won't go into major detail here, but my dad was a violent, nasty drunk. He did a lot of awful things to myself, my sister and mum. The only good thing he ever did for me was introduce me to the occult at around age 10. Crowley became a stabilising force in my life and I was - still am - very involved. Anyway, when I was around 13, an ex and a friend decided to camp at Boleskine graveyard, and I wish we hadn't. It didn't take long before we heard whispering and disembodied voices. All of a sudden a stag appeared with an owl on its back as if it was the most normal thing in the world. We were bickering amongst eachother and decided we would stay despite the oppressive atmosphere. We were going down to loch ness to fetch water but as we we were looking down from the graveyard we all witnessed a huge, hulking hairy figure around 7 foot tall which ran from one side to the next. That was the final straw for us and we started walking towards dores. Now, dores is about an hour and a half walking from Boleskine yet it appeared as if it passed in no time. It remains one of the most weird of experiences.

I lived with my mam, grandad and nana altogether for the majority of my life. My grandad was Catholic and had strong beliefs of an afterlife. My mam became his main carer and spent many hours in the lead up to his passing, talking about the afterlife. My grandad wasn't scared of dying. He became bed bound and one day, prior to being on medication for pain control, he announced he had a visitor at the end of the bed. He believed his mam (she had died when he was very young) came to get him but he told her to leave as he wasn't ready yet. He described her and the sighting gave him such hope and reassurance. My mam would joke on and say if there was an afterlife, he should let us know but not to haunt us. He'd always promised he wouldn't come into our bedrooms but he would let us know one way or the other. After his death, the family all gathered in the funeral home to say prayers for our last goodbye. The room was silent as we all gathered our thoughts. My mam joked to ease the sadness how my grandad had said he would let us know of the afterlife. Then out of nowhere, my cousins phone went. It said in Arnies voice "I'll be back". My cousin swears he turned his phone to silent and that wasn't even set as his ringtone. We all took is as a sign. Small things have happened since in our home, where only my mam lives now as my nana is in care but she never feels alone and every now and then will see a dark shadow wondering along her passage. She likes to believe it is her dad and not the old woman who died in the passage before we moved in! Ha!

Halfway through this thread and loving all the stories so far - but I can only read them in the daytime! I have a few stories of my own, my childhood home was haunted, lived there until I was 19 but I’ll save those stories for later if anyone is interested.

I’ll start with an old golf club that I worked in from being 18-23. Long post ahead sorry!

I worked on the bar there, and in the evenings there would only be one person working. If it’s your turn for the evening shift, you arrive at 5pm and leave at 11pm. Alone the whole time apart from the odd customers that come in after a round of golf. All usually gone by 9pm. Then you would go around the clubhouse, turn all the lights off, close all the windows, lock all the external doors then set the alarm before locking the main doors and leaving.

The main part of the clubhouse was refurbished and quite modern but had a split level bar, with a couple steps between the two looking into two different rooms if that makes sense. Not really sure how to explain it. We had a bell on the bar top for any customers to ring in case we were in the kitchen or upstairs etc. Now this bell would move all the time! I never heard it ring but it would be on one end of the bar, I’d pop out come back and it would be sat on the other end of the bar with no one around! Sometimes it would even move to the bar on the other level!

I used to hate going up and checking the shower rooms on each side of the building, ladies and mens and they were really old buildings. (Built in 1897 I believe). Halfway through me working there they installed new light switches everywhere to be more energy efficient - motion sensor ones. Now and again I would look out of the window in the main bar area across to the windows of the shower rooms and the lights would come on by themselves when absolutely no one else was there but me. It was very unnerving having to stay there so late and alone. After locking the doors I would always run to my car and shoot out of the car park as I hated walking past the windows and always felt like I was being watched! Oh also had the tv turn itself on on a few occasions as well!

I have previously shared experiences on here about about my own personal ghostie bloke who has been with me for decades who moves home with me wherever I go. He has been very quiet for a year or so, up until last week when my kitchen scissors disappeared from the drawer where I keep them in the cutlery tray with the teaspoons. OH denied having them and not putting them back indeed he was moaning that he couldn't find them earlier when he wanted them, so I assumed they'd somehow been thrown away or mislaid and resolved to buy another pair. Meanwile I emptied the drawer completely just in case the scissors had slipped down the back of the tray or been put in another compartment yet they were defintely NOT there thus I went and bought another pair of big black handled snips, popped them into the tray and left it at that.

Now imagine my surprise when yesterday I was putting the washing-up away, opened the cutlery drawer to drop the clean stuff in and there alongside the black scissors was the missing pair of orange handled scissors! He'd brought them back after a week and then last night I followed OH off to bed switching off the lights etc as I went but he came down this morning saying I'd left the lounge light and the hall lights on too - I know I hadn't! - specifically as I got up to visit the loo during the night I would have seen the hallway light if it had been on whereas all I did see was one of the solar lamps in a pot by the front door shining through the glass panels. I had not left any lights on and I know that for a fact so this can only be my old friend again reminding me he's still here. The odd thing is the coincidence because only a couple of days ago my brother sent me a photo of our grandparents that a distant cousin had sent him, the only photo I have of them, and suddenly up pops my Guest again! I find it heartwarming and reassuring TBH :)

Back in the 70's and early 80's my dad had an evening job in a pub called The Punch Bowl in Sefton, Merseyside.

The pub itself is over 200 years old but it is next door to a church, St Helen's/Sefton Church which is 12th century. The pub is notoriously haunted but there is a picture of an apparent ghost inside the church of a vicar in old dress.

The pub is regarded as one of the most haunted in Merseyside and my dad could tell you about the tales of poltergeists and the man in the nautical uniform who used to sit by the fire. He would say there were certain areas of the pub that were just very cold and intense and he hated going into the cellar. He is not a man to pay much attention to stuff like ghosts but he was convinced there was something there. There were always weird goings on.

There was one particular occasion were the alarms went off one night and the landlord waited for the police to arrive. Everything was fine and the police said to the landlord 'you'd better get your little girl back inside' to which landlord said 'I don't have any children'. A search them took place around the graveyard of the church but nothing. There was also the occasion of car crashing because little girl ran from the church into a field across the road.

The picture below was taken back in the days when my dad was there. Back then it was full of open fireplaces and snugs. It's now some sort of gastro pub.

I worked in a hospital and heard someone sigh right behind my ear, I was expecting it to be another nurse and turned round and no one was there 🤷🏻‍♀️ My old dog used to come up the stairs and sleep on the landing by my door and after she died, a few times I heard little footsteps coming up the stairs then what sounded like her settling outside the door. There’s always a very cold feeling at the bottom of the stairs, my dad said he saw a glimpse child going up the stairs and a pair of riding boots at the bottom of the stairs.
(Our house is about 200 years old and what was farm workers cottages)

Years ago when my mum was in her twenties she was driving through the town she’d gone to school in when she saw an old school friend beckoning her over from the side of the road. She pulled over and leaned across to open the door when she realised that this school friend had been dead for several years. She drove off like a rocket!

My mum is one of the most no-nonsense people you could meet. She’d never believe something like this if it hadn’t happened to her. I honestly think unless you’ve had something you cannot logically explain happen to you, you will remain at best skeptical. It seems such a strange notion.

Years ago, some friends and I visited Chingle Hall just outside of Preston, supposedly one of the most haunted houses in the UK. We were late for the tour so told to return at a later date. As we were driving away, the three of us all saw an adult male with a young boy and girl, all dressed in Victorian outfits, chopping firewood. We thought they were actors as part of the tour.
When we eventually returned to the house some months later, it transpired that there had once been a moat around the hall and the children of the house (a boy and girl) had both drowned in it, and that they were often seen in the grounds of the house! There were no ‘actors’, the only people at the house were the two guys who ran the tours. To us they just looked like people, we had all seen them and even remarked that they were there. We tried to visit again a few years ago but it is now closed to the public.

No ghost stories as such but I did have a psychic warn me not to get into a car with a friend within the next week. She gave me a very distinct warning and told me the circumstances that I would be asked to go and details of the crash that would happen.

Within the week my friend asked me in the exact words the psychic used to to with her in her car. I refused to go, but feeling a bit silly, as very much a non-believer I had only gone along to keep a mate company.

The car friend’s mum called me to tell me she was in hospital following a car accident. The car had rolled several times and the roof of the car was down at the steering wheel. The police told my friend, who only had minor head injuries, that they could not understand how she’d got out alive.

It was all exactly as the psychic had described.

Not exactly ghostly but my childhood dog, a dalmatian, was on her walk with me, my parents, and our other dog (the daughter of the other dog) when she suddenly started acting really strange when we walked past a really old abandoned building. She gave it a wide berth with her ears pricked up and she looked terrified. She wasn't usually an anxious dog. My parents said to me the building used to be an abbatoir. She certainly sensed something! The other dog didn't.

I'm not someone who definitely believes either way but I do want to.

In 2017 my dad passed away after a long battle with cancer. I can't remember if it was the night after or a few nights after but in a dream my mobile was ringing and I picked it up and heard my dad's voice saying 'hello', then I woke up with a start. It was like I really heard it it my bedroom as it made me wake up with a jump. I haven't had any dreams of him since.. so I do like to think it was him sending a message. It seems apt as well as my dad was of few words, like me. It just really felt like him. May have just been a stage of grief but it was comforting either way.

Not really a ghost story as such but after my grandads funeral I saw a dragonfly flying around the crematorium. I’m having a hard time emotionally the past few weeks and went to the dr yesterday and on my way home saw a dragonfly and it wasn’t near water or anything. Probably nothing but I always seem to see various animals when I’m feeling particularly sad

I live in a really, really old house and for almost 100 years it was owned by the same family. One of them, the daughter, was born and died here and absolutely loved this house. Our neighbour says she sees her in the garden often (but she is a nutter so I laugh that off a lot, I've never seen anything)

Shortly after we moved in, my son and I were in our kitchen. There is the original back door with massive knocker, the house has been extended past it so that door is now an internal door. There was no one else in the house and all the external doors were locked.

I absolutely jumped out of my skin when the knocker went. Absolutely not the wind or anything else. It was a really friendly, jaunty knock, nothing scary about it at all. If my son hadn't been there too and heard it I'd have thought I'd imagined it.

My husband thinks I'm mental and still doesn't believe me. I managed to compose myself and said that they were welcome to stay but please don't scare the children. I've heard nothing since (thank god).

Just wanted to share another story that happened to my grandfather when he was a young man
When my grandad was courting my nan he used to walk from his village to hers through a wood. One day on his usual walk through the wood he felt a hand on his shoulder preventing him from moving forward, before he could do anything else a massive branch from a tree landed at his feet. As soon as the branch landed the hand released his shoulder of course as he looked behind him there was nobody else around. If he hadn't of stopped at that moment the branch would of hit him and most probably have killed him. He had a guardian angel with him that day.

I’ve got quite a few, mostly around my Nana who died when I was 11. I'll put a few here.

When she was dying she was in a bed in the living room, my big sister & a lot of family were with her (I’d been sent to school). My sister told me the phone kept ringing but every time she answered it it was just the normal line noise. As my Nana died she sat up bolt upright (she’d not moved sort from nurses turning her in weeks) stretched out her arms and said *name*. Lay back & died. The name was that of my brother who’d died as a toddler in the 80s.

Nana had a clock that chimed Westminster Chimes every hour, grandad hated it so she rarely wound them. After they died we put it in our house. It kept stopping at the time she died and would keep chiming. My mum got fed up & put it in the shed.
Fast forward 25 yrs & I have a son who LOVES clocks so mum gives me Nana’s clock. Sure enough it randomly chimes. So I put it in the loft. I keep hearing the chimes. In the end I go “Nana will you give over!?” They stopped. Not heard them since.

Little things would go missing after searching high and low “Nana can you give it back?” Said item would turn up in the middle of the floor 😂

I find it comforting she’s still around.

Not had much from my grandad apart from the people who moved into their house asking if someone had died there. As they’d seen a tall man at the top of the stairs. He’s died in hospital (5 days after nana) but HATED anyone who wasn’t family going upstairs so I think he was just annoyed at them lol

not the most interesting sroty, but I have never worked out what happened. I was with a friend at home, my grandparents were visiting and stayed in a kind of granny flat at the top of our house, they were out, my sister and mum were downstairs, suddenly as we were playing my grandma's watch was thrown down the stairs to where me and my friend were. No idea what happened, never could work out any explantion, really bizarre. It wasn;t an old house or anything either.
Tbh a lot of these stories have convinced me I can only ever live in new builds
new builds can be worse because they’re often built on land that ‘wasn’t meant’ to be built on 😂
