My take is, from memory their leaving statement didn't specify privacy but financial independence from the RF. So they were never going to disappear. I think Meghan by now would be expecting invites to the Met Gala and other A-list events. That hasn't happened. Maybe the organisers don't see them as A-List.

How A-List is it though to get caught up in a two hour pap chase in NY?

Yeah I'm not sure what exactly he wants at this point. He wanted to be out of the RF. He is now out of the RF and wanting privacy, but not a week or so (it seems like anyway) goes by without a story about them. Maybe that's the media's fault for reporting on their moves, but at some point they need to just live their lives without attention.
I mean, who really wants to look inside his head - there isn’t enough money in the world … but I don’t think anyone would disagree that he and William had an awful time with the press when they were young. They were in the middle of a perfect storm really, the media were getting emboldened and had means however suspect, the traditional Pathé news style reporting on the Royal Family had been washed away and their parents alternatively courted and demonised the media.

To some degree the early stuff was more as a result of what they were … Charles and Diana’s sons … rather than who they were. At some point that flipped and they became media worthy in their own right. William has obviously eventually found a way to live with it that works for him … and being direct heir gives him a lot of power and control over that. To me, Harry needs to accept that he will always be newsworthy and it doesn’t matter what he does or where he goes that will be the same … but even if he does I would guess he will still find something to rail against.

If they want the paps to leave them alone, they could always, you know, keep their heads down, do some honest work and stop creating drama at every opportunity. 🙄

I think they must be the first people it's ever happened to. As if their sense of self-importance needs inflating any further.

The comment from M&H’s spokesperson never said it was high speed (which is what the Mayor says).
I can see them being pursued by the paparazzi for around two hours but I think the spokesperson used exaggerated language such as ‘chase’ (you automatically think speed is involved), ‘catastrophic’, ‘relentless’, etc. No doubt it would have been scary for H&M and Doria, especially as in the back of their mind the Paris car crash is there.
Also, not wearing seatbelts is idiotic. Even though no one in the Paris crash were wearing seatbelts, it’s still more likely to save your life and prevent harm.
exaggerated and emotive language was definitely used. "a chase that could have been fatal"

They are always involved in some kind of drama. People eventually tire of it. Celebrity or otherwise.

Is there a breakdown of what the costs were for?

Do they pay for Westminster palace? Many of the people involved were doing their normal job that they would have been paid for regardless, so does the figure include this?

I always wonder this about wages, the police were working anyway, no new officers were hired so how do they work out staffing costs? They were already being paid for, unless that’s just the overtime bill?

Wonder how much they sold it for - convenient that now they want to spend time with their grandkids when it's insolvent
In 2013 it was worth £30million but doubt it’s that high now.
I never really got party pieces. The suppliers they bought from sold to other companies so I often found the same designs but cheaper elsewhere.

They’re both over retirement age and they do now have 6 grandchildren (and no doubt James and his wife will give them even more) so I don’t begrudge them getting out while the going is good so to speak!

I don’t have a problem with the Middletons they seem like a good family and I have a soft spot for Mike Middleton, I love his cute smile 😊

I'm not greatly surprised that Party Pieces was perhaps struggling, it's one of those businesses that was clearly a great idea at the time, filled a gap in the market and went on to be relatively successful but as with so many now, multiple others have come along, oversaturated the market and likely offered a cheaper price.

I did see a tweet that said they couldn't believe William hadn't bailed them out 😂 😂 Could you imagine the uproar if he did, likely the same person would have had something to say about it

I really don't begrudge the Middletons, they've worked hard to build a business (yes OK they had money to start with but that doesn't mean they didn't have to put the work in) and seem to have raised 3 relatively well-rounded, good kids. I've never greatly bought into the idea that Carole sent Kate chasing after Wills (always the Mother who gets the blame for that isn't it?) and think she probably just wanted to make sure her kids had the very best chances in life and made sure they were in the right schools, socialising in the right circles etc.

It's nice that they all seem to live quite close together (I think), I think having the Middletons around is one of the best things that could have happened to both William and George as future Kings

Exactly, I'm sure back in the eighties or whenever it was that they started it, good party stuff was limited, hence why it did so well. Now however you can get literally anything and everything from various online retailers and as you say, even the supermarkets and Home Bargains have a great selection. It didn't really stand a chance in today's market

At a certain point too you need to just accept that life isn't fair and if you really don't want to be in the papers or have paparazzi take photos of you then you might need to change the way you live your life.
Harry wants to live in the ideal world where he can do the charity stuff and the big appearances and award shows and the papers will only report on him positively and photographers will only photograph him when he wants to be photographed but that's not reality for any celebrity. Obviously in an ideal world the tabloids wouldn't be such tit stirrers and we'd all respect each others privacy but we don't live in that world and Harry fighting for it only seems to be making him miserable. Maybe he should just back out of the limelight and live his life quietly. He keeps himself in the spotlight and there are consequences for that. Whether those consequences are fair or not is another story but they're reality at the moment and if he can't cope with them and his mental health is being damaged then he needs to look at what he's doing. If I had his money I'd never put myself out there like he does - what's motivating him to keep doing award shows and books etc? It has to be either fame or money. He's always claimed to hate being famous but does he really? And he should be able to live off the money he has. He has more money than most people will ever see. Maybe he likes being a perpetual victim.

One thing I saw on twitter was someone posting that every A list celebrity got home from the Met Gala without an issue. 😉
These two go to some sycophantic awards ceremony and there's chaos. If Gloria Steinem wants to give awards to her friends maybe next time she should just pop around to their house. 🤪
