I think all the lockdowns and restrictions just helped them hide how very isolated they had become. They were always going to end up like this, but Covid made it easier. It was easier to just not send the children back to school and probably easier to let them think it was a good thing whilst they were already off, and there was uncertainty, new rules and then another lockdown. I can imagine them saying "see we were right, there was no point going back to school when they are closed again now!" Chris and Sarah already had no friends left and were already seeing family less but it just gave them an excuse.
There were lots of opportunities when they could have socialised, walks, seeing people in the garden, but they didn't. It's very obvious at this point that they just don't really have anyone. Family members got one invite to see the new house so they could show off, and haven't been mentioned since. Most people want to see family and friends more this christmas after last year, and still aren't really confident how long they will be able to right now.
When we went to the local light switch on, we saw people we knew and stopped for quick chats. The children saw some of their friends and had been discussing for days who would be there. Yesterday we had our friends and their children over to make gingerbread houses. We don't want to go to big parties or anything but just being able to spend time with friends and family is what Christmas is about for us, not piles of presents. We still had a good time last christmas but it's nice to be able to choose to socialise with other people sometimes.
