It's been around for about 6 or 7 years. A very small player compared to WA, but the good thing is that it uses open source coding, and is apparently far more secure than WA as it uses end-to-end encryption.
It's a bit basic but does a job, and isn't owned by any of the big players like Facebook or Google, so your privacy shouldn't, in theory, end up with a 3rd party.
The only problem at the moment is that there's been a huge surge in new users to Signal (and another rival, Telegram) since WA announced their new privacy T&Cs. As a consequence their servers are swamped and running on the slow side until they upgrade with additional servers and expand their network bandwidth.
But be patient, it's a good app if you value your privacy. And as I say, there's always Telegram (which I also use) as a Plan B
