Oh gosh, I think I’m going to binge watch all the episodes (again!!!) in anticipation.
Re the funeral scenes… please don’t tell me it’s Samantha’s funeral :-(
I can’t wait to see what they do. I watched SATC when I was 19 and was addicted immediately at these four older women who used to meet up! I even lived in New York for a few years (hugely disappointed as was nothing remotely like the show). Now I’m old haha! I remember at the time things were so shocking, yet now people wouldn’t bat an eyelid at these shocking things. Shows how times have changed so much in such little time.
I did love watching the characters grow. I always disliked Carrie. So excited!

I don't think the sailor episode has aged that well. I get that it was the first episode shot after 9/11 and it's supposed to be dedicated to the love of NYC. But it's so overdone and forceful. They'd have been far better off sprinkling in more NYC homage throughout the whole season rather than trying to force it all into one episode imo. Maybe the sailor's role could have been over two episodes where Carrie shows him why she loves NYC.

I do love this top 😍

I just watched an episode where Samantha and Smith act out a intruder rape role play fantasy, it’s bleeping disgusting 🤢.
She then proudly recounts the details at the dinner table, 🤮, and when Charlotte says how deeply offensive it is, they all laugh and call her a prude!
I’m going off the character of Samantha upon rewatching.

I'm probably going to sound really old, but it was 20 years ago and most TV shows from them have things that would be seen as problematic with today's eyes. Sex and TC has a relatively small number of issues imo.

Quite a lot of friends jokes would fall flat these days. 30 rock banned several episodes with blackface and I totally agree with Tina fey's reasoning but at the same time the point they were making is the same reason for banning it now. That show was talking about Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby a long time before it was public knowledge.

Anyway sorry back to this and two consenting adults in a role play is fine, but yeah a bit problematic if the show was promoting the scenario. I haven't got that far in my rewatch yet.

It's probably a scenario copied from gay porn as much of the show seems to be women acting out the lives of gay men in NYC. I chuckle everytime one of the single women talkes about it being a month or something since they last had sex as if that was forever😆

Around the same time Tyra Banks was getting teenage girls to act out a violent murder scene for photos in America's next top model 😳.

Anyway I could be totally wrong 😆 and stand to be corrected.

There’s plenty of episodes of SATC that when viewed through 2021 eyes are a massive problem, but were possibly seen as ‘fine’ in 1999 - like the one where Samantha dates a black man and the one where Carrie cannot get her head round bisexuality 😂

I’m pretty sure with the new series they’re going to be trying their hardest to redress some of the problematic episodes of the original season, which is important, but I also hope it isn’t too laboured.

😂😂 tbh even at the time watching ANTM on my friend’s parents’ tv (they had sky) it didn’t seem right, Tyra terrorised those poor girls. Fancy having someone shave their hair off and shave a gap in their teeth for a ~fashion aesthetic then sending them back to bumfuck no where in the Deep South the next day! Poor things

They were pretty nasty to Samantha with the worldwide delivery guy when they knew she wasn't in a good place. Carrie was awful, keeps carrying on the joke even though she can see it's upsetting her. I'm quite surprised SJP with her exec role went ahead with so many plots that made the character look terrible. And Carrie is the person everyone was supposed to want to be?

That show was beyond awful with how cruel it was, but I absolutely loved it. Only there you would get girls pretending they've been stabbed to death with Tyra then critiquing them saying they weren't fierce enough.

Tyra was like suck it up witches, I had to do some tit when I was a nobody so you do what I say. She pretended that she did all the same photoshoots - as if posing pretending you're underwater is the same as dunking people with a fear of water in a tank and telling them to bring it!

The only person to have ever really benefited it from it was Tyra, as intended. This week your task will be advertising my single/book/makeup 🙄

Her worst was probably asking someone "so you grew up with a drug addicted prostitute mum, what was that like?" Trying to channel her inner talk show host and get a few tears out so she can run over and hug her while giving a sympathetic head tilt. Terrible. I'll move some of these posts to an ANTM thread

Is it still going?! If so I must catch up, wonder if we have a project runway thread too? Back in the day I thought PR was an absolute snooze fest but on reflection it’s because no one was being tortured like over at ANTM 😭 I do love PR now!

This scene just popped into my head. It’s not even funny but I find it hilarious.

Carrie - (very seriously and earnestly) “have you ever been in love?”

Big - “ABSO-bleeping-LUTELY!“ … *drives off*

I hated Big even back then.

I wish people would just accept things from back in the day for what they were - a reflection of the times. Retrospectively banning everything as if it never existed is unrealistic at best and frankly idiotic.

There are more things on TV now that I have an issue with than back then - for example there is just too much graphic and unnecessary sex and loud slurping kissing unexpectedly shoe-horned into random episodes of random shows these days - you can't watch anything with your family anymore. In 10-20 years people will be astounded that TV shows were like this too. Even SATC wasn't bad compared to what's on these days.

Anyone else crease at the end of S2 where the horse looks Carrie in the face after she does the whole ‘your girl is lovely Hubble’ line to Big? 🤣

One billion per cent agree with this.
TV shows like this were a reflection on the times and issues in society AT THAT TIME. Sexism was rife, racism, although frowned upon, was kept pretty much hush as barely anybody would speak out in order not to upset the status quo. As cheesy and unrealistic SATC was, it was a little bit of a game changer for society and women especially, especially women’s sexuality. Men just like Big did exist (wasn’t he loosely based on 1990’s Trump?)… oral sex and threesomes, anal sex etc were still so taboo. So was shaving pubic hair. If anything, it portrays how sexualised society has become. These things have crept into the media as taboo and are now pretty much regarded as a norm. Music videos are so sexualised. I totally agree with you about not wanting to sit and watch anything with the family, as you’re right, it’s so sexual. Definitely never used to be like this before 9pm or whatever. Sad really.

agreed, also men like big are still very much common imo. I am now mid 30s, and although some of the things (i.e. about people being bi etc) seem totally outdated, a lot of the things about dating as a woman are pretty much the same. Lots of things are very positive, in that women are allowed to discuss their sex lives, expect pleasure etc.... but as you said some things just show how much porn has really influenced society in a cery negative way

Yes to this. Its so annoying that everyone keeps saying this that and the other isn't appropriate now, hasn't aged well and dissecting it, stating what's wrong with it... Don't people just watch TV and enjoy it for what it is? If it was made now, fair enough but ya know...

I'm sure the show runners at the time said, celebratory, that they never had to ask the women to diet only the men (actors that played big and Aiden). Struck me as a bit odd.

Are we congratatuting that the women knew they needed to stay in great shape? And happy that men now have to face troublesome standards (in society as a whole)? It seemed to be presented to say how forward thinking the show was.

----

Almost finished my rewatch and totally forgot Miranda's fictional magazine was called tattle tale 😆
