Well said. I remember thinking how low it was of Julia to be sleeping with somebody's husband and then she had the audacity to wear a T-Shirt calling his wife 'low'. She doesn't have the best reputation and this comes from insiders, it's been reported how mean she is.

RYes, it’s so cruel and disrespectful, he and Ewen Mcgreggor think they “deserve” affairs due to their status, more so than their sex, I’m guessing. They think their wives are lucky to have them. I wonder how many “open marriages” are wanted by both partners.,as marriages are between two people, not two or more? I suspect that more often, (not always obviously) the one who sees himself as a prize,( its more often the man,) decides it’s mutual. The wife if also a mother will grit her teeth and suffer it. I know someone will answer they stay for money and prestige. Maybe some do, but most would I bet prefer less money and a faithful husband.aWhen I worked in Events, I often saw trophy wives and it put me off men who had a lot more than me! I’m the opposite of a gold digger.
It’s not an enviable role, they act like they are permanently re-applying for their jobs.

Also, to the Tattler who said affairs are inevitable due to greater longevity; I know a lot of elderly relatives whose devotion has lasted 50 or 60 years. The carers, I used to have for my mum said it was “old time love” and you don’t see it as much now, and they would know. Many elderly spouses spend their last poorly years looking after an even poorlier spouse.
Nor having an affair isn’t just down to length of marriage, it’s how you view commitment too. The cult of the individual has a lot to answer for.

The concept of lifelong monogamous relationships has existed for a long time in some, but not all, cultures. The lifespan of the average person has increased quite dramatically in every part of the world.

There is absolutely no point whatsoever in getting on ones high horse because people cheat but penguins don’t.

We are the most evolved species on the planet but apparently can’t move beyond “most mammals mate for life”. Their lives are shorter than ours, their life cycles so much shorter, youth, old age.

I have been cheated on- I was heartbroken but moved on. I have cheated, the person hurt by it moved on. Cheating is a terribly hurtful thing. But when “till death do us part” became a vow people said to each other, few were realistically looking at 60+ years thereafter.

All too many marriages from our grandparents day would have ended in divorce if the freedom we have now existed. 60 year marriages at what cost?

I mostly agree with this. Esther Perel is a relationship expert/therapist that delves into this topic and affairs and I must say she really reframes the idea of fidelity from a sociological, historical and economic angle that is completely fascinating. My issue here of course is the imbalance of power. When we discuss open marriages and affairs it is almost always from the male perspective. The idea of marriage and fidelity is actually to control women and stop women from straying and in all the cases mentioned here where there are supposed 'open marriages' that is exactly what is happening. I would argue that until there is true equality across the board, open marriages aren't really possible.
