Maybe it's just because I have sensitive skin and these patches irritate me even as an adult.. but these can't be gentle enough for a child's skin ???

I don't think it's physically likely to harm him, but at that age I feel like kids are often just doing what they think will get their parents' approval, and then the parents see it and got "Omg he's sooooooo identical to me!!!!" which of course is positive reinforcement for the kid to lean heavily into wanting to do everything their parent is doing, not necessarily them being that into it on their own.

As someone who worked for a small business that used to have a mandatory summer pool party... can confirm it is not the most enjoyable experience. The saving grace was that there was only one man on the entire staff and he didn't go near the pool if any of us were in it. Once more men were hired, the summer celebration switched to mandatory training in the morning with a lunch and goofy activities in the office in the afternoon.
