Why is the window blurred??
I think it’s her attempt to keep her whereabouts secret. Even though she’s already showed us her room and a quick Google will tell you exactly where it is. She also failed to blur out the other window so you can pretty much pinpoint exactly which room she’s in too. Once again a poor effort from our Roobs, but it’s that thought that counts, right?

I think Ruby should go home now and quit while she's ahead. She's got into Oxford, moved in, visited the library, been to afternoon tea, got the OXFORD lanyard in a photo. It can only go downhill now.

In other news, what's Marfa up to? Do we know?

There’s a girl called Jing I really like! She studies at one of the Ivy League unis in America but did a year in Oxford. My only grumble is she doesn’t have loads of videos to watch which is probably a good thing for me as I’d just watch her instead of studying most likely.
I love Jing! I'm sad that she's going back to the States, her Oxford and year abroad content has been lovely. I'd recommend watching her to anyone. She's so well adjusted and insightful.

She already showed her entire room, the buildings outside, the building from outside, so you could see it. I mean, the rooms all look the same, as well as the curtains. It is pretty generic looking, so hardly a secret. Why she suddenly decided to go all stealth is beyond comprehension. We already know. There is only so much post grad accommodation at any university. Except for the desk and window configuration, this is what her room looks like. Duh, Ruby. You already overshared, yet again! Just like you did on your cottage home. Just like you did when staying in New England! She really is in a fog.

Am I right in thinking she has to fund this Masters? If so, what are we talking ££££?

Like £14k plus living expenses and rent.. so maybe £25k

I think she will have a good time once she tries to meet people. There are alot of students just like her in Oxford postgrad, (a bit sheltered and not ready for the real world)

students doing unfunded Oxford humanities masters are often quite rich and unusual, because it is a lot of money to blow on a 9 month course

I wonder if she was hoping for Ship Street Houses instead, website says that some grad students are housed there as well. If I were Ruby I'd be a bit cross too. Cheng Building is an eyesore 😂 I imagine it'll be more comfortable in terms of facilities though.

Another uni question- are the people she’s living with all doing the same course?
No, they will be doing all kinds of courses across the whole university. There might be some people doing her course, although it’s unlikely. For Oxford and Cambridge, you apply for the course and express a preference for the College you want to join and live in so it’s likely that almost all of the other people on her course will be living in different Colleges. That’s what makes it sadder that she ducked out of the socialising, because she’s missing out on opportunities to get to know the people she’s living with.

And you just know she wasn’t feeling relaxed holes up in her room. She would have been able to hear everyone else have fun and chatting in the corridors etc.

Based on her reaction to her former flatmates in uni, that would definitely be the case. I experience serious anxiety over human noise so I'd have sympathy any other time but this is really the first proper opportunity for her to at least be acquainted with the people she will be surrounded with. She could have dropped by for an hour or two, said hello and the went back to her room saying she was knackered from moving. I feel like she'll use Oxford as a photo and video prop this year and she won't be immersed in anything else. I hope she proves me wrong.

Whilst I agree that Ruby is a fraud with her reading and her enjoyment of learning, I completely relate to her with the swerving the speed date-style meet on the first night. She didn't have to travel far, but it's still exhausting moving in to halls, you have to go up and down stairs multiple times from the car. I'm an introvert, for undergrad and postgrad I hated the thought of big gatherings, and preferred to make friends from smaller groups. Everyone who's been to uni knows that people are very rarely friends with the people you meet on freshers week, you don't even talk to half the people you talk to that week ever again. Ruby will be in a seminar group of about ten people, and they will all get a whatsapp group going and then she'll make one or two friends via that. She might also join a society (something low key) and meet people there in a non-pressured first meeting. Her college parents will also introduce her to people they think she'll get along with (other introverts). I don't think she's missing out at all.

I'm hoping Jack Edwards is seething at her content. I think he's a reading faker too, but he can string a sensible sentence together about a book, something Ruby can't. He didn't play the game properly, with work experience and chummy relationships with professors. He thought being a youtuber would be enough. Ruby knows Oxford does not care about that. It costs £75 to send in an application to Oxford or Cambridge which is such a con, no other UK unis charge. Loving that Jack wasted his. Twice.

Kaleyn Grace Apple is also at Oxford (for her PHD in History) and it feels way more realistic.
She's actually doing her PhD through Yale right now and living London while she writes and doing research in Oxford's archives sometimes. She's done some interesting videos talking about how she's organising/corralling all her research too. One of the few study tubers who I think actually uses Notion to improve her work output rather than as waste of time busy-work.

If you go back in her videos though you'll see her Oxford content from her Masters. (CW: She had a vile experience there - assault I believe? Anyway, she talks about it a bit. ).

There’s always some fruit and veggies that’s pollinated by bees, fertilised using animal produce etc etc. All throughout my youth, I worked in restaurants and never once saw a vegan fryer - a veggie one, yes, but never a vegan one even in huge kitchen so the ‘vegan’ food is always being cooked with non-vegan foods. Kitchens are also required to have dairy free and vegetarian utensils, but vegan utensils are not a legal requirement so you could have something, for example, that is vegetarian and contains eggs being prepared on the dairy free chopping board which would also be used to prepare vegan options. There’s always going to be some form of input from animals and a degree of cross contamination. I think most of the vegan societies have now recognised this and promote cutting back on using animal products where you can but acknowledge it isn’t fully possible.
Personally I don’t think that food being cross-contaminated with animal products makes it not vegan? At least for me it’s completely an ethical belief so as long as I’m not funding the animal agriculture industry, it’s alright haha.

But I can definitely see veganism being used as an excuse to hide disordered eating, I just think it’s really important not to generalise that a whole group of people have eating disorders just because some wellness influencers will use being plant-based as an excuse to only eat salads. I mean people do the same thing with like ‘gut health’ and stuff yk?

I’ve actually just decided to delete my comment completely since I can’t work out how to blank it out and I don’t want to trigger anyone.

Please read my comments again - not once have I generalised, I have only said that the two are correlated and often go hand in hand.

I’m aware this isn’t really about Ruby now so I’m happy to take to the OT thread if you want to discuss further.

The reason why we think Ruby is restricting is because she dropped a lot of weight around the time she started at Exeter, grew out her bangs, and started trying to seem as small as possible. In the US, a lot of people gain weight their freshman year of university because they're stressed and there are limited eating options, so that made it stand out even more to me. Not every vegan has ED, but a large percentage of vegans have a history of disordered eating and Ruby clearly isn't vegan for ethical reasons as you've seen the amount of animal products she still wears.
I don't think she's lost considerable amount of weight, I just think she's not 17 years old anymore. Her face has thinned out but everybody's does by their mid-20s. She's not fat, but she's by no means thin and willowy either. She looks to be a healthy weight for her height.
