The move-in vlog is live! 🥳

She went to one (1) tea social and is drained from all the socialising so decides to have a night in. She’s really going to sit in her room and not make any friends, isn’t she 🙃

I don't know about you or anyone else but I got the impression that she didn't really like her room, I mean she tried to make a joke out of it by saying that it was ok and that it will do before saying that it was so nice, but I wasn't buying it at all as think she realised that the accommodation wasn't what she was expecting.

The advice she gave in that part is absolutely terrible. The whole point of freshers is to adjust to a new city, meet new people, and have fun. I consider myself introverted and I get socially drained - but that's at the end of a day where I've spent 8+ hours in the company of others, not after attending a quick informal move-in event. Anyone who takes her seriously will have a miserable time at uni.

Edit: good luck to her trying to find a fitted sheet for a double bed when every fresher in Oxford will have raided all the homeware shops.

I mean, I get the introvert thing she mentions, but she has already bailed on the first social evening on her first day 😬 I would have advised her to at least go to the first one to put faces to names and then sit out other events later in the week. Now she's already going to be behind on knowing who anyone is. Oh dear. I say this as someone who leans more to being introvert myself.

I think she would have known where she was staying its not like there are loads of options for postgrads. If you look on the website, graduate students either get housed in the modern building, or other off-campus accommodation. I have no idea how Oxford allocate postgrad accommodation, but if Ruby wanted en-suite and on-site, then there wasn’t really a choice of anything older and more aesthetic.

I do think it was a bit silly to skip out on the social events though - the postgrad community in the college seems quite small and if you don’t get involved in stuff, it seems like it could be quite easy to get a bit isolated.

First things first…is this her dad in the back seat with headphones on acting like a sullen teenager?

I would NOT skip the first social event! Now at the 2nd one everyone will already know each other and you’ll be the awkward newbie type vibes!!

Don't give into peer pressure! It's okay to not want to interact with anyone on the unnecessary degree you're taking after paying £40,000 to prolong the university experience! Why go out for a couple of hours to have pizza and make an effort to meet the people who you'll be spending the next year with when you can bail on everything and have a meal of a tiny slice of sad cake in your room? Just stay home and make a dark macadamia MYEED BWOARD!

I thought she might at least try to engage with campus life a little the first week before losing interest entirely, but she couldn't even make it one day before mentally checking out.

"Oiy'm varry acksoyted," she says, looking like she's about to burst into tears at any moment.

She's sharing a kitchen with multiple other students and no doubt she already hates that. She also has a "college dad", so pray for the poor bastard who she'll be expecting to drive her home every weekend now Daddy Bones is enjoying some peace and quiet.

Her father should have been the one in the front seat, not her. But that might just be a personal preference for me.

Not sure why she started whispering at the end. I don't think the walls are so thin that you have to whisper. Her room is nice during the day, and I bet it would be very cozy at night. You can tell she isn't happy though.

Also wtf is a college dad?!

Location update - if she went to the tea thing in her housing she’s in some new housing (wasn’t their when I was in Oxford was being built) and it’s dead on the high street. Her flat looks to be overlooking a middle courtyard but it’s not where I would want to stay

As someone who was a freshman in 2020, you absolutely should try at least a couple of orientation events that sound fun during freshers week, especially if you don't know anyone there. I cannot express enough how hard it was to make friends coming into uni during a pandemic where we couldn't meet in person and rarely knew any of our classmates. I'm an introvert and I spend most of my time in my dorm, but my friends have helped a few times when I didn't even think to ask. We don't hangout all the time or party, but I still have people I can ask about the homework or to drive me to the mechanic if my car breaks down. You can find people who don't want to party and who actually take uni seriously, but you're not going to find them by avoiding every social event like Ruby.

Tbh, I feel a little bit jealous of her ... She seems to have so many opportunities, travelling, attending prestigious schools and universitys (I mean, Exeter is quite good, too?), having time to write books...
Honestly tho, she seems to be harsh with herself, not wanting to make any mistakes etc
I think this might be the reason, why she hardly thinks for herself? And prefers to use AI and learn things by heart
But she’s constantly making mistakes so it’s all for nothing🙃

Yeah this was so strange to me. Even after my parents were divorced any time my dad gave my mum a lift somewhere she would still be in the front seat and I’d be in the back. That’s just how it goes.

I’ve never been to uni at all so I’m wondering what types of books they have. I can’t imagine them having rows of YA books for enjoyment? The libraries seem like they would be mostly educational and related to all the courses you can study??
Don’t worry she can probably join the public library for any YA books she ‘needs’!

I'd never heard of it either, apparently it's a mentor support system of sorts where they match you up with "parents" who've been there a while and one or more "siblings" from another degree subject. Seems like a good way to meet a few new people who know the college without the pressure of having to go out of your way to make new friends if you're not overly social, but naturally Ruby didn't bother even when all the effort was made for her.

Seems like that pizza meetup was their first "family" meal, so at least Martha will be relieved to know that Ruby doesn't want to know her college sibling, either.

Tbf I don’t think it’s that weird that her dad is in the back of the car. I’m guessing she gets travel sickness and therefore has to sit in the front.

She's been the back before for family trips, tho. I'm pretty sure it's in her vlogs

I often sit in front when I'm driving with my parents. If my husband is in the car too, we both sit in the back. I used to have travel sickness when I was younger. Nowadays I don't get sick anymore, but it sometimes feels weird sitting in the back. I can't read (front and back) or just look down at my phone for a few minutes.

Nothing quite so scholarly and erudite as posing with a cappuccino and a Little Pangwin, Big Oideas compilation of excerpts from a book you have no intention of actually reading 🙃

I’m living for this content, we’re going to have so much fun 🤩🥳
Ngl she looks like a middle aged working class woman going to work in the office except it’s Ruby at Oxford
