I'm certain the university actually looks at the channels of Studytubers and thinks 'oh duck, not again'.

I do feel a lot of sympathy for Roobs. If she looked outside her bubble, she'd know a lot of other universities are now taking Oxford's spot among those applying for their bachelor's currently. There are certain universities that give a CV an off-the-wall, 'different' 'wow'-factor, that don't look like Oxford-reject consolation prizes and signal what Oxbridge used to.

The only reason I can think of as to why she won't do this apart from her delusions is that she simply isn't looking to ever have a job other than 'influencing'. Which is okay, but this constant pursuit of Oxford is going to destroy her. The only videos of hers that have gained significant traction are back-to-school videos, her graduation, and her dropping out/fail videos.

Bath has come on leaps and bounds when it comes to research and CV clout, and St Andrew's/York are absolutely sublime choices for her when it comes to the quality of teaching, with Hogwarts-style buildings. Consolation prize Durham actually has an excellent English department, and their acceptance rates/quality of English teaching is rated higher than Oxbridge this year.

My little brother is a bit of a tit and needs people to know how amazing he is all the time a la Roobs (which I'll give him, he is genuinely something special, although I won't let him know and inflate that ego even more). But the difference is he's motivated, has worked multiple 'proper' jobs in the real adult world, and has lived alone since he was seventeen. 'I went to Oxford' doesn't beg the same questions and conversation and intrigue as it used to. So he did the academic work, did the legwork, and found a university that's selective and also has the kind of reputation where people are impressed and want to know more. And because he's lived in the real world, he knows what's important about a university and postgraduate opportunities, because he's watched where his friends managed to stumble with regard to university choice, university life, and postgrad opportunities (or lack thereof). I really do blame most of this on her having no experience in the real world.
Years ago, when I was a student, I used to post on The Student Room and I was always amazed by the number of young people who were completely obsessed with certain universities and very snobbish about others, irrespective of whether those universities specialised in what they wanted to study or not. OK, to a certain extent a degree is about transferable skills and your undergrad degree subject and location is pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things so it doesn’t necessarily matter too much where you go, but if you know you want to study X and a university is known for their specialism in that, I never really understood why you’d choose a ‘more prestigious’ university over and above one that might suit you better and might give you a leg-up in terms of getting onto a post-grad course?

Also I think you do have to be realistic about whether a specific university is actually going to suit you - if you’re not great with exams for example, or you know that you’re probably going to need a higher degree of pastoral support, or if you prefer a smaller campus or no campus at all then some universities are just not going to work for you as well as others might. I understand prestige and the power of a name in certain circles but for most people, it probably isn’t as important as they think it is. It‘s not like you can keep redoing your degree (well, most of us can’t …) and I just don’t see the point of compromising so much just for a name.

I'm betting if she goes back to uni, it'll be at undergrad again purely to buy herself a few more years of avoiding life with very little work or challenge, at either Exeter where she's familiar with the staff (returning home every week, naturally), another uni closer to home like Warwick (another Russell Group uni that offers a Philosophy, Literature and Classics degree, so she could recycle half her old work) or an Open University degree so she never has to leave her room.
I don't think she would ever consider Open University, way too common for her! 🤣

And yet it’s well respected by employers (who recognise the huge level of commitment and motivation needed to complete a degree this way) and is also known for strong research in a number of areas.

Reckon she's read Wintergirls? That tit's required reading if you're gonna be an ED girlie.
She has, she gave it 4 stars. I can't remember if she talked about it in one of her "1345987 cereal boxes I read last year" videos though.

eta: brace yourselves, bullies

*POV: You're watching Gilmore Girls in the reflection of the glasses of someone who doesn't understand how POV works.

I can't second this enough! The motivation thing is significant, not everyone can hack it, but it's a fantastic way to get your foot in the door if you left school with nothing but have the drive to get your degree. Have heard of a lot of OU students who've ended up at Oxford, or even elite US universities after that.

They have a lot of case studies on their website and create a hell of a lot of nurses and teachers, I've seen OU nurses kicking around medical settings on their placements.

I don't think Ruby could hack it even if she wanted to, personally.

Never underestimate the lies she'll tell herself and others to get 3 years of staying in her room. She'll tell herself she's fine that it's not Oxford and be shouting how overrated campus-based universities are and praising the independence of it while never 5 feet away from mummy.

It's respected because most people who do OU degrees put in a lot of work to complete them while juggling other commitments like a career, caring or parenting. Someone like Ruby sitting at home with 0 responsibilities completing a part time distance learning degree would garner no respect from employers at all, she'd just look mad. I don't think she'd have the self discipline to complete it anyway!

Can’t wait to see what she makes of the Gilmore take on food… two fatphobic thin women who somehow manage to stay skinny in spite of eating any amount of junk food. It’s extremely problematic and they’re toxic in a lot of other ways as well, but I’m pretty sure Roobee’s takeaway will be AUTOMINAL! STYOODIUSS! MY IDENTITY IS NOW COFFEE-DRINKER!

We’re getting a video today, I feel it in my bones. I’m gonna go comb through the thread for the most-liked thread title.

Edit: Made a new thread!
