Years ago, when I was a student, I used to post on The Student Room and I was always amazed by the number of young people who were completely obsessed with certain universities and very snobbish about others, irrespective of whether those universities specialised in what they wanted to study or not. OK, to a certain extent a degree is about transferable skills and your undergrad degree subject and location is pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things so it doesn’t necessarily matter too much where you go, but if you know you want to study X and a university is known for their specialism in that, I never really understood why you’d choose a ‘more prestigious’ university over and above one that might suit you better and might give you a leg-up in terms of getting onto a post-grad course?I'm certain the university actually looks at the channels of Studytubers and thinks 'oh duck, not again'.
I do feel a lot of sympathy for Roobs. If she looked outside her bubble, she'd know a lot of other universities are now taking Oxford's spot among those applying for their bachelor's currently. There are certain universities that give a CV an off-the-wall, 'different' 'wow'-factor, that don't look like Oxford-reject consolation prizes and signal what Oxbridge used to.
The only reason I can think of as to why she won't do this apart from her delusions is that she simply isn't looking to ever have a job other than 'influencing'. Which is okay, but this constant pursuit of Oxford is going to destroy her. The only videos of hers that have gained significant traction are back-to-school videos, her graduation, and her dropping out/fail videos.
Bath has come on leaps and bounds when it comes to research and CV clout, and St Andrew's/York are absolutely sublime choices for her when it comes to the quality of teaching, with Hogwarts-style buildings. Consolation prize Durham actually has an excellent English department, and their acceptance rates/quality of English teaching is rated higher than Oxbridge this year.
My little brother is a bit of a tit and needs people to know how amazing he is all the time a la Roobs (which I'll give him, he is genuinely something special, although I won't let him know and inflate that ego even more). But the difference is he's motivated, has worked multiple 'proper' jobs in the real adult world, and has lived alone since he was seventeen. 'I went to Oxford' doesn't beg the same questions and conversation and intrigue as it used to. So he did the academic work, did the legwork, and found a university that's selective and also has the kind of reputation where people are impressed and want to know more. And because he's lived in the real world, he knows what's important about a university and postgraduate opportunities, because he's watched where his friends managed to stumble with regard to university choice, university life, and postgrad opportunities (or lack thereof). I really do blame most of this on her having no experience in the real world.
Also I think you do have to be realistic about whether a specific university is actually going to suit you - if you’re not great with exams for example, or you know that you’re probably going to need a higher degree of pastoral support, or if you prefer a smaller campus or no campus at all then some universities are just not going to work for you as well as others might. I understand prestige and the power of a name in certain circles but for most people, it probably isn’t as important as they think it is. It‘s not like you can keep redoing your degree (well, most of us can’t …) and I just don’t see the point of compromising so much just for a name.
