I don't think anyone would have ago about her going on a holiday in the UK the government restrictions allow it
Tbh I don’t want to be the COVID police or anything but rn with the “Indian variant” spreading rapidly, I think it’s very inadvisable to go outside your local area atm. I know we technically can go on holiday within the UK, but just because we can doesn’t mean we necessarily should. She’s probably being cryptic bc she doesn’t want to get hate like Jade or Eve.

i definitely get the impression she (mainly) says she’s interested in it to sound more intelligent (i know you can have an interest in something without being a pro at it, but still)
Yeah sure you can have an interest in something that is out of your field of study, however for certain fields it's very unlikely that a layman (or someone who is studying a completely different subject) would be able to develop an interest for them because they're less accessible. I tried reading my boyfriend's dissertation, it was impossible to understand, obviously, because I've never studied physics at a university level. Conversely he was able to read my own dissertation which is about Anglo-American relations in the 80s because the subject and the language is more accessible.

I think the fact that she hasn't said where she is was deliberately calculated to fuel speculation. She can't just be honest and direct, can she?
*this* is why i can't ever feel sorry for her, despite the fact that she's obviously struggling (though with her own ego, mostly). she's so calculating and manipulative, and it always feels as though she has an ulterior motive

...this is also the reason why i don't think she is autistic--my autistic friends are the most genuine, honest and straight-talking people i know (please don't reply to this telling me that not all autistic people are the same, because i know that of course😅)

I just need to point this out. I think someone mentioned it before ruby uploaded her birthday haul video. Someone listed up possible birthday presents she might include in said video. The list was almost spot on, children’s books, something posh, something thoughtful from Martha, but there was no “sports equipment, gymnastics equipment etc.” correct me if I’m wrong, but last year I am quite sure ruby received a lot of workout stuff. Again I might be wrong, but maybe her parents do notice her behavior and try to sort it out, even tough it doesn’t show on her social media.

Or she already has everything 😂

uuh sorry to quote myself but i'm thinking about this again and it's really annoying me lol. going to a university like cambridge or oxford opens up more opportunities for you than any other institution can possibly present you with. i just feel as though holly has squandered it, and it makes me furious because she could have done so many exciting things!

there are people who would have given an arm or a leg to attend that university, while (and i know i'm being quite harsh here) holly sat in her room pretty much 24/7, talked to nobody except her parents and learnt....what? how to memorize huge amounts of information? she already knew she could do that
This so much! Especially with the pandemic, a lot of my friends that are at Oxbridge right now have not been able to take advantage of the opportunities as much and they are really devastated about it. It's like Holly never realized how lucky she was!

Also, going back to Ruby and doing busy work: trying to read everything and memorizing it is simply not the way advanced study works and it really annoys me that she is portraying academia in this lense to younger viewers. This is absolutely not to flex but I got a full funding studentship to do my MPhil at Cambridge in a social science subject in October and can confirm I never studied as many hours as Ruby (with the exception the 2 days before handing in my thesis!). Academia is all about critical thinking and trying to find answers to complex questions. Ruby however, is not really answering any whys but only what questions (what was victorian childhood like, what was people's night routines in the victorian period etc ), and even her decision to film such videos shows a lack of reflection and critical analysis of her own behaviour which simply doesn't set her up well for advanced study.. And while I haven't participated in book club (i cringe just thinking about tuning in), it seems like she is not able to come up with creative perspectives on the readings, which is what academia is all about (adding new perspectives to an existing field, or investigating a brand new one)

This is all to say (and sorry for the long rant!) she is advertising a false idea of academia and she will be disappointed in the future. She is also misleading a lot of younger people who might not be able to read for 10 hours a day (maybe because they have to .... work or do chores like most of us) but might have stronger analytical skills than her and still be put off by academia because of the framing people like Ruby present of this field. Rant over!

Tbf Oxbridge and uni in general can seem lonely and overwhelming. There's a lot of pressure to take advantage of all the opportunities, but a lot of people who study there struggle with mental health difficulties or just find the workload so massive that they don't do much other stuff.

I do agree with the fact that Ruby didn't take advantage of all the benefits and opportunities of University, especially since she spent all of first year hiding away in a studio. I know that many students are able make plenty of friends without sharing a flat but I think that they do have to make a more conscious effort to do so.

Lmao I was like Ruby I think you mean astronomy? My boyfriend is a physicist, astrophysics is not accessible at all to a layreader like Ruby. I would love to see Ruby attempt to read an astrophysics article and realise that it's mostly very complex maths and there's nothing aesthetic about it
"After drinking tea, I read some of 'An Expert's Guide to Traversing Wormholes' by Professor Alex X. Quarkson and I am not exaggerating when I say it's in the top 10 books I've ever read.

It weaves words and knowledge so, so beautifully and it's written with such apprehension but also it's volatile and it's relatable but also enigmatic.

There are minute moments that flow into grand ones, and the verbiage used at the beginning of the book repeats throughout the rest of the tome to elucidate each sentence. I cried at least three times before I finished it. Such a powerful book which comes highly recommended."

Absolutely.

What's even more frustrating is that she seems completely aware that putting that much extra work is completely unnecessary and unrealistic, but still engages in and encourages it. In one of her recent Q&As she mentioned she'd advise her younger self not to put that level of extra work into essays and exams as she fully recognises that it's not necessary for gaining the grades needed and likely didn't improve hers any. So she's self-aware enough to realise she's just going overboard, but still actively does it and promotes that unhealthy lifestyle.

In Ruby's case, devoting what seems like 12+ hours a day to studying isn't just wildly impractical, it clearly hasn't helped her in any way other than tangentially, with her studytube videos becoming popular. Devoting all her time to studying didn't help get her into her dream uni, her academic and critical skills are still highly questionable and her social life appeared non-existent even before the 'rona. Her one major success has been building a brand and a platform for herself, but clearly spending her entire waking life studying (and occasionally frolicking) hasn't sparked any inspiration for new video ideas or ways to grow and stay relevant.

I found it especially sad that she says being an author is her dream job and she wants to make a living as a writer. She mentions writing in her routine videos, but she only seems to spend a tiny amount of time on it compared to all the needless, timewasting "productivity" crap she does for uni. She doesn't need any of the academic busywork she does to achieve her goal of being an author, and if she were smarter, she'd realise she's been in a prime position to leverage her YouTube fame to kickstart a writing career and she's squandering it.

Publishing houses love giving contracts to YouTubers because it's a new writer that comes with a built-in fanbase and a tonne of easy sales (plus they have their own pre-built platform for publicity.) As evidenced by Sasha Alsberg, Christine Riccio, Zoella (and her ghostwriter,) Unjaded Jade, and so on, quality and talent isn't a concern, so long as they can slap a familiar "brand" name on a book and market it to young fans and achieve some crossover sales as well. I've no doubt if she put some small amount of effort in, she could use the powers of internet fame and get a legit book deal somewhere, even if it's at a smaller publisher. She could even document the process for some original (for her, at least) video content.

But why achieve your goals when you can read Lewis Carroll while brushing your teeth and wistfully daydreaming about living in the Victorian era, when you could churn your own butter, dance carefree through fields and die from consumption at the age of 25.

😂 though to be fair, that just seems to be a work/study from home thing... lots of us who don't have a commute make up for the lack of movement like that, or use our time a bit more flexibly. Her pre-pandemic routines weren't really like this, as far as I recall...
I haven't really been able to embrace the whole working/studying from home i work as a care assistant whist doing a nursing degree and looking after a toddler so my breaks from online learning have been making snacks or talking about different types of dinosaurs

For sure, many haven't been able to work and/or study remotely! Personally, I have found the lack of movement - small things like physically walking to the office, getting a fresh cup of coffee, not... staying in my bedroom all day - to be quiet challenging, and I know others have had similar experiences. So taking a walk in the middle of the day, breaking up my work-day with amll chores etc. (which under normal circumstances wouldn't be possible at all) has been a means of coping. Longer lunch-breaks, working later or earlier hours rather than the standard 9-5 have all been part of that. So I don't think that part of Ruby's routine is unusual, and I don't think it says much about how she will adjust to an ordinary workday post-pandemic at all.

I'm autistic and strangely enough I struggled with pathological lying as a child/teen, which my psychiatrist said is somewhat common in autistics. Especially those of us who are masking and trying to pass as neurotypical, or those of us which other mental health issues. I wouldn't be shocked if she is neurodivergent, but I guess we can't know unless she confirms anything.

And honestly, if she is autistic, I can't see her making a video or doing much for the community. Autism isn't very ✨aesthetic✨or Victorian, unless she likes the aesthetic of being thrown in a terrible hospital and given an exorcism like many of us would have been back then (Oh god I hope I don't give her any video ideas. "Day in the life at a Victorian mental hospital!" would be right up her alley).

I work with autistic teenagers for a living, and I see a lot of Ruby's traits in them. Some of them are very cryptic, just like Ruby is. I definitely think she's neurodivergent to some extent. I've just looked up symptoms of autism in teenagers (I know she's not technically a teenager anymore but you get me)... I've picked out a few specific ones:

- Be totally focused on a specific topic
- Use speech in unusual ways
- Prefer to hang out with children much younger than themselves
- Be rigid in following rules

There is also a huge link between autism and eating disorders. I had severe anorexia as a teenager and am quite similar to Ruby in terms of school work and sticking to a range of routines on a much milder level and I think I might be somewhere low on the spectrum myself. I could definitely see her being diagnosed if she ever went to see a specialist. Who knows, maybe she is already diagnosed with autism. Nothing wrong with being neurodivergent Roobee - embrace it!

Studying for 12+ hours a day is not productive at all. Yeah that may work for some people and that's great but it isn't really productive. You're just reading and studying all day that's it. It's a one way trip to burnout and it's actually quite worrying. If I was studying 12+ hours EVERDAY I'd expect to be a child genius, not missing out on my dream university and living a victorian fantasy
