Because it’s just unthinkable in the time and resources they had available (they were present at the tapas bar, verified by multiple witnesses, with no long absences) that they could’ve killed her and disposed of her body so incredibly well that she has never been found. They’d only just arrived in the place.
The Netflix series is really good for an accurate portrayal of what happened (the McCanns refused to cooperate with it)
The Netflix documentary concentrated only on the abduction theory, the theory that was started by the MCCanns, they might have stated they were against it but why were so many of their team/ supporters involved in interviews etc? All to promote their side and the ‘abduction’ theory IMO

I did watch Unbelievable. I can’t believe how much that girl was failed all because she didn’t react the way that people expected her to. There is no one way to feel/react to a traumatic situation. I think people get so caught up in what the media put out there, or what other people divulge, that it comes across like Chinese whispers. I wish we knew the absolute truth.
Me too. I have never really believed the parents were involved (maybe just for a fleeting moment), but I do think they were Extremely negligent and if they had been someone else (working class, single mother etc etc) they would have been treated very differently.

Really agree with this. How do we know how they act 24 hours a day 364 days a year? How do we know what their relationship is like? Have you seen unbelievable on Netflix? The girl was seriously sexually assaulted and because she didn’t act the way she was expected to the police, her friends, her family didn’t believe her and she got charged with lying to the police. Years later photographic evidence emerged of the attack. There is a whole section in the book version of it about trauma and how there is no one way to act and how people can react very differently to it.
Unbelievable isn’t even close to the McCanns situation. At least the McCanns have some people believing them, duck they’ve got a whole operation (grange) which exists just to find their daughter. People not believing them wasn’t because of a systematic problem in the police force. Personally I don’t believe them because of the things they themselves have said and done. Not because they were ‘asking for it’ or because they were troubled. They’ve had more support and financial backing than Marie ever had for her case.

I wasn’t meaning to compare it to unbelievable as such / more just the bit around expectations of how people react to trauma, that’s all.

I thought the first few episodes focussed very much on the parents killing her? Then it switched and went to the abduction theory.

I believe they were using it as an example in that you just don’t know how people will behave in times of trauma, and how easy it is to build a narrative based on a picture or an idea that a person has to behave a certain way. Tigger was not comparing what happened to Marie to the McCanns.

To me the McCanns(Privileged middle class) and Marie(Troubled, vulnerable, not well off) have such different circumstances surrounding their cases that I find it hard to see them in the same light as each other. I do get where you’re coming from though.

Really? I found it very pro mc can. And actually I had gone with the intruder scenario for years before that documentary seemed so one sided that I went down the rabbit hole of all the info I could find
Same! I fed into their ‘abduction’ narrative for years like most of the public until I started looking into the case to find that actually there’s still no evidence of a break in/ abduction, that was was planted by the McCanns themselves from the exact moment of announcement

Is there any actual evidence of anything? I think that’s the problem with this case, the scene was so badly managed any possible evidence is long gone. Everything else is just speculation.

I always thought that with the mother being a anaesthetist, she may have given her a little drug,so little girl would sleep ok but perhaps too much.Thats what I have always thought, friends have kept schtum.hmm that’s my thought.

Either way I still think they come across as cold and unfeeling ,weather that's through guilt or bitterness 🤷‍♀️ it's their public face that people judge them on and even after all these years they haven't let the mask slip ,and that's what I find odd ..

I agree. I totally understand that trauma affects people differently and I respect that. My personal issue is that we've seen other parents of kidnapped children and how they have behaved and the McCanns behaviour never came close to any of them. I have no grounds to say it cause I'm not a behavioural expert but something always just seemed off about them. Even before suspicion fell on them.

If Kate/Gerry/both were involved in her killing, when is this supposed to have happened? In the time before dinner?
There’s a theory that she may well have died earlier that evening , in an accidental way (Maybe a fall due to sedation and left unsupervised - at sofa area where cadaver and blood dogs alerted) hence more time to concoct a cover story/ hide the body, they realised this would destroy their career and have the twins taken off them so had to go with the abduction narrative

I can’t believe all of their friends on the holiday would help cover that kind of thing up though, especially for so long.

Well like you say we're no experts but they never fitted the bill of a typical grieving parent. And truth be told I think that was their downfall, it's seemed to draw more attention to them, and pointed the finger of suspicion their way 🤷‍♀️

Thank you. I don’t buy that at all. Who on earth could have their child die accidentally, concoct a whole story without alerting the twins or anyone else, go and hide the body where it has never been found, get ready for dinner, go to dinner as normal, be with their friends completely normally just to save their career? They would both have to be complete psychopaths and both in on the deception. By the way - totally get everyone is entitled to their opinion on here so not trying to tell anyone they are wrong. Just my opinion.

I know me too, but what if they all had sedated their children to some extent so they could go out each night without them? They would be frightened they’d all be charged especially after one of their children had died

Something else that bothers me about them, they never really talk about Madeline. In interviews, it's always how hard its been for them, how they felt when it happened, defending themselves, what they need. Justifying everything. We rarely hear concern for Madeline. What she might be going through, how afraid she might be, what she needs. Why is that? Do they know those thoughts are redundant because shes no longer here or are they just that self involved?

What kind of a little girl was she? What was her favourite food? Her favourite programme? Her favourite game? Her favourite song?
It's been the Kate and Gerry show from day 1.

Maybe the fact doctors can switch off in certain situations ? it's called bedside manner..
My husband is a hospital consultant. He may have a “bedside manner” with patients but it is completely different with his own children. Very protective and emotional as any other parent would be. Our children are a little older than the McCanns and it was not the norm to leave young children unattended like that. I still can’t get over how they could be in kids club all day every day of the holiday at such a young age.
We worked hard so holidays were spent with our children. Beach, sandcastles, water parks etc. The enjoyment of being with them. I think they behaved strangely before Maddie went missing and afterwards too.

Do you think in this scenario they would have kept it in the public eye for all these years? If by some miracle they had “got away” with killing their daughter, accidentally or not, why not less the initial fuss die down and then get on with your life? Why would you want people to keep talking about it and bringing it back into everyone’s minds?
