Just managed to catch up on everything..glad that she had the sentencing she deserved (WLO - the only thing she deserves for her horrific acts) but feel for the families who didn't get justice for their babies and hope their cases can be brought to trial again. I do wonder if more cases may come soon as there hasn't been as much in the media about her background etc as I was expecting, unless I've missed things or that is still to come.
So many parents must now be thinking back on their experiences in NICU where she may have been working and wondering if their babies could've been harmed or worse. She certainly had obsessions with certain babies/families, the Facebook adding/searching/messaging is an absolute no no and completely unprofessional.
In terms of the photo of the baby without any oxygen support on, i have to say I have a similar photo of my own baby that I took whilst the nurse cleaned underneath the mask and changes tapes etc (literally removed for a matter of seconds and she asked if I wanted to take the photo so I had my phone ready etc and it was very safe). This obviously depends on the type of support needed - hi flow oxygen, non invasive or invasive respiratory support, in some cases it would absolutely be too dangerous but I just wanted to put it out there in case anybody had similar photos and were concerned reading the article. Knowing what we know now about Letby everything of course comes into question about the babies in her care and it could well have been something sinister on her part, who knows, but it is something that can be done safely in the right circumstances.
I do wonder if maybe something happened during her training like a sudden or traumatic emergency situations and she thrived from the attention (she would have had a lot of support especially witnessing something like that as a student). She was definitely seeking out attention from her colleagues. I also wonder if she attacked multiples to try and suggest it was a genetic issue to explain away these unexpected and unexplained events. Sadly these poor families will likely never know why.
And finally I truly hope that all those who tried to brush this under the carpet are held to account because they sadly enabled a lot of this by ignoring the concerns that were raised. I hope that massive lessons will be learnt and this will bring about change within healthcare services and the way in which investigations take place.
