Looks like they increased the contrast to me. If you use less contrast in photoshop, ie. make a bleached-out-looking image, you see less wrinkles and marks, less detail overall. Increase contrast and it's the opposite effect, skin can look worse.

So he has had to cut short his holiday as the photos of him with the kids were published and most probably he isn't allowed round them.
