Yours is a fantastic post on all points. Unlike you, I’ve always been in a situation where the bill is divided equally irrespective of what each diner ate or drank. (Eating out in restaurants with the legal profession is the worst for being ripped off. Their arrogant behaviour is breathtaking.) As for her not going on to Universal Credit now, she'd rather beg for tips and Patreon and live that way. She'd rather publish books on poverty issues which are no longer representative of her own situation. Going on UC would mean that the celebrity 'friends' would vanish into thin air. Additionally, she would have to keep a work search diary and the worst thing which could happen to JM is that she would have to accept a 'normal' i.e. non media job which involves her getting off her lazy backside every day.One minute she’s complaining about people splitting the bill equally and being ripped off and the next she’s moaning about people who want to pay for what they are.
It’s simple enough. You ask for the bill and people add up their share of what they ate. Leave it on the table or hand it to the waiter or waitress. I’ve always been used to doing that as the people I socialise with don’t have loads of money. I’ve hardly ever been in the situation where anyone wanted to divide a bill equally.
I was also going to say that. People who are well below the poverty line will generally have other things to spend their cash on than going to restaurants (Im not trying to suggest that people who are broke should never eat out).
She went out for two meals last week didn’t she? She’s horribly out of touch with people on the breadline. I had a look at that bag she was gifted.
It was almost 80 pounds. Im not suggesting that she has to wear everything from the pound shop but you basically have an influencer writing about poverty. A poverty experience from a decade ago.
You could say the same for a few people who have a lot of cash now but there are people who have tried to help people living below the line without acting like they are the only person who ever lived on benefits/was poor
I was on benefits for a lot longer than Jack. It’s hard. She does not have a clue what it’s like to be on universal credit. The pressure to evidence a 35 hour a week job search.
The constant pressure worrying about sanctions. I saw some recent posts of hers where people were suggesting that she claim UC just now due to her burnout and they were met with no. She could not go back to life on benefits. But it’s ok for people that she’s going to be interviewing for her new book?
Forgive me if this sounds harsh but if she thinks she’s too good to be on benefits then why is she writing a book about other people’s poverty experiences?
The truth is, she earns too much cash to be on UC but always has to give the impression that she’s broke. Something that really annoys me.
I know of someone (not famous) who crowdfunded around 4 grand for alternative pain treatments and was last seen asking people to pay vet bills.
For some people twitter has just turned into one huge grift. If jack fell on hard times the sensible thing would be to claim benefits. If it’s good enough for everyone else it should be good enough for her.
I sincerely hope she’s not going to be profiting out of other people’s poverty.
I think you nailed it by referring to her possibly thinking she is too good for benefits. Lots of people from middle class families like JM end up on benefits at some time or another in their lives through the circumstances which life throws at us all, they just don't try to make themselves a celebrity on the back of it.
