Although I must confess it’s possible that they are two similar but separate sets - however, the window dressing with Coops in shot are not a brocade/damask floral (possibly Laura Ashley Josette according to Google reverse imagery) style like the onesI would also like to point out that they do not seem to hang like curtains and are possibly Roman blinds or they are so new they still have the creases in from packaging and old interior design expert Ms M hasn’t ironed them

Yes! Similar to learning to drive. In my first few lessons the instructor kept telling me off for looking down at the gear stick, he said you should just know which gear you're in by touch. That seemed like madness at the time, but of course after a little while it becomes second nature.

OOOH quoting myself like a ninny because Friendly Lurker is lurking today and has reminded me about this!Only thing I would add is that there are plenty of pockets of Southend, including the one that grew me, that are also demographically very similar to the broader swathes of Basildon, Dagenham etc.. Although Jack wouldn’t dream of moving to any of them either, even if some of them do have glorious estuary views, so I suppose it’s a moot point.
Southend ain’t all lovely Thorpe Bay (or Shoebury Garrison, or Leigh’s Marine/Highlands Estates), it’s still got some of the most deprived postcodes in the country, as in they’re in the top 5% of the IMD. (Southend is actually very like Zone 1/2-3 of London in that respect, the deprivation and wealth are often found very close together, unlike in an lot of other places where there’s usually more of a gradual transition between areas.) I raise this whenever the opportunity arises, because it always underscores the point that she really does not care about people living in poverty and deprivation. It’s just a hook for her, the way she could become famous, and it worked until now because so few people were paying attention to it.
Jack could have been even more famous, and could have won her fame deservedly, if she’d been a good and effective activist, improving people’s opportunities, forcing local services to improve provision and resource allocation for the people in desperate need locally. (Southend’s current council cabinet are doing some good stuff actually, both policywise and the things they’re giving the nod to officers to do - one recent thing that caught my eye was a £25k grant bid that was won and used to buy slow cookers and electric blankets for households in fuel poverty, to help them cook and stay warm less expensively. But Jack had almost a decade of a tit local Tory administration to challenge, yet didn’t change anything they did, makes you think.)
Even if she’d just done the damn foodbank volunteering she pretended to, except without the drama she caused on the odd occasion she demanded to have people’s time, she could have built a good solid reputation locally; if she’d platformed local people and groups who are doing the work, if she’d held up the examples in Southend of people working tirelessly to fill some of the gaps government has created over the last decade; if she’d done anything meaningful she could practically have been carried aloft to give evidence in Parliament on a cloud of people’s enthusiasm. But nah. Twitter and “Poor me” stories and paint and TROLLS instead. And fraud and grifting, obvs.
Anyway, Jack does nothing for people who live in deprived postcodes, only the postcodes where Farrow and Ball stockists are to be found.

It’s less than an hour’s watch but I do not recommend watching if you’re triggered by abusive relationships - even though that’s not the meat of the doco, it was a big problem for me the last time I watched this.
I think I’ve posted before, the Storehouse, probably the food bank in Southend with the highest local awareness levels, is on this estate. The tower blocks have a long history of vulnerable tenants being cuckooed by London-based drugs gangs.
A quick skim through reminds me that this is not a completely inaccurate snapshot of what social life was like growing up in Southend in the 2000s for plenty of people. Some bits of the doco were probably (definitely!) played up for the cameras, but generally things were IRL just as grim, but still with that weird sense of camaraderie and coalescing around characters for lots of us. Some of my early posts here talked about the hopelessness and no-point-bothering that lots of us came fitted with as standard, growing up with a crap background. This documentary sort-of shows some of that - although doesn’t explore any of the causes/issues (and tbf I’m a little bit off my nut on Day Nurse and cocodamol this afternoon so I’m not going to be able to do it to any standard worth doing either).
I was involved with similar people in my teens. It’s weird thinking back that it was all just totally normal, everyone being aggressive and crews at war over drugs and territory - but without weapons. (Apart from the absolute weapons in the film obvs.) Two decades is such a short time, but so much has changed. So much has stayed the same for so many kids growing up in deprivation though, there’s still that hole of nothingness that ends up expressed as a desperate need to be part of something, to be accepted into a crew, it’s just now the crews expectyou to have knives alongside 10-bags, and you get a gun if you’re doing bigger stuff than shotting in a seaside town. Old friends’ 13yo kids carry knives these days.

Just like they’d never get a Guardian column or a morning TV slot or whatever. Jack Monroe takes up space.
