Doesn’t it occur to him he will never have the standing to front bbc news ever again. He would be crucified on social media every time he appeared.
He probably thinks that taking a settlement would make him look guilty. Regardless of whether or not he expects to be able to front the news again, he has the money to be able to stand his ground for now.

Woah, plot twist! o_O I’d been thinking he was holding out for a big settlement and that after that happened, he’d be on his merry way. Your argument flips that on its head!

The narcissist in him is probably outraged that he's been sidelined? I would imagine that he would want to control what happens next and not be dictated to by a settlement which would effectively shut the door on any future plans for a return as a reformed character?

They can't sack him as they can't investigate him while he's saying he has mental health problems so he'll carry on being the highest earner at the BBC until 2026 when his contract ends!

They simply shouldn't have ever been paying so much for a man to read an autocue. Hopefully they've learnt and future newsreaders will be paid more sensible amounts.

What is a sensible amount then? Pay too little and you lose all your best talent to commercial TV.

BBC have talent?!

If he's still on the sick, isn't there a cut off point. In Local Government they pay 6 months full pay then 6 months half pay. Then start the 'Incapacity' procedure where you have to decide to return or terminate your contract of employment.

It's disgusting the licence payers are still funding his full salary

You can dismiss someone on the grounds of capability though so long term sick leave (paid or unpaid) is not going to protect him for years on end, nor can it be used as some kind of stand off against the bbc. There are lots of variables in terms of when it becomes reasonable to dismiss someone, unique to each situation, such as what the employer have or haven’t done to help someone return to work, prospect of recovery etc.

There are so many hoops that you have to jump through to dismiss someone on health grounds. Like you say, it can eventually be done on capability grounds but the employer has to prove that they have done x/y/z or could end up at tribunal. I do this for my job and it is such a headache.

It would make far more sense in this situation for the BBC to make a private settlement offer. However like I said the other day, it may be that Huw would/has rejected this so far so that he doesn’t look guilty of any wrongdoing.

At least Huw had a history with metal illness. Schofield was a disgrace.

That's the quickest and easiest way out. Depending on his contract he might get a payout, but he might not as well.
