Have you ever known someone who turned out to be a murderer?

My dad use to work with a girl who was murdered by a guy she went on a date with. She was very savvy, told her parents where she was going etc. But the guy seemed a bit ‘off’ and got really drunk. She helped him back to his hotel and because he was in such a state walked him to his room. He then killed and raped her, wrapped her body in a rug and dumped her in a woods. He was later caught and confessed to it all and that he had planned to do it.

My brother went to school with someone who was done for murder. We always said this kid would be trouble as when they were in junior school they stabbed my brother in the face with a pencil.

These stories are so wild. I'm morbidly curious and slightly paranoid about how close we are to people who turn out to be murderers, yet have no idea.

Do you think murder is a mental, genetic or environmental thing or all three? I’m so fascinated by it all!

This is the most fascinating part of it all.

Childhood trauma is very common for serial killers so there’s definitely the environmental factor with it but genetically are they predisposed?

Or is the ability to kill within us all, but our upbringings and socialisation teach us right from wrong and create a boundary that decency won’t let us cross?

I love trying to understand it and am fascinated by the serial killer interviews and the creation of behavioural science (made famous by the Mindhunter series) and the original book the series was based on is really interesting.

I personally think it’s a mix of all three. A lot of the time we hear of killers and they almost always have had an awful childhood; raised in abusive households, for example. Probably experiencing some underlying mental health issues as a result. Every one of us has the potential to kill inside of us (think self-defence), but I think there must be a limit to how much a person can take mentally before they snap and react. I do believe the way we’re raised has a lot to do with how we turn out and our perception of what is right and wrong, good and evil etc.

I have an estranged family member that killed 3 people when he was very young - about 12/13. It was extremely violent and it was in a different country well known for violence but I still feel uncomfortable knowing a part of his DNA is in me. His brother was also placed in prison for attempted murder and his sister was an evil woman too. I can't remember what her crimes were but they were something incredibly messed up. My cousin decided to be a **** and told me about the other side of my family when I was 8. I used to get really upset when I was angry because I was worried I would turn out like him. I do think there were a lot of environmental factors which caused this as it is strange 3 of them were all violent people. Mental illness also follows us from that side of the family too. I do find myself getting angry incredibly quickly and this scares me but I know I don't have those sorts of thoughts or motivation inside me. I'm one of those people that get very upset and cry as opposed to reacting there in the moment.

He was also murdered a few years ago. Completely unrelated but I always wondered if it was karma in a way. We have nothing to do with that side of the family and it has always felt like a dirty secret

I went to school with a guy who murdered a heavily pregnant girl and her little dog about 10yrs ago now. It was national news for a long time. It happened across the road from where my grandmother lived. He was convicted for child destruction as the baby was perfectly formed, named and was nearly due to be born till he murdered them. One of the most evil things I've ever heard in my life.

When I was a child I lived a few doors up from a large family of boys. All nice lads, we used to hang out & play games etc. The oldest son turned out to be a murderer when he grew up. He strangled his girlfriend. Shocked was not the word when I found out.

I once lived in a street where a man was in a relationship with a woman. He started an affair with her sister and then the girlfriend ended up murdered. We believe the sister helped murder her own sister.

I knew a boy who plotted revenge on his lovers ex on millennium eve... they drove around to the street to 'get him', to a house opposite where my auntie lives...and petrol bombed what they thought was his house. It was the wrong house and they nearly killed an innocent man sleeping in his bed. Will never forget my aunties neighbour pounding on our door, in the middle of our party to tell her!

Worst of all I used to work closely with a man in a large industrial company. He was very creepy and always made inappropriate comments. Being young I used to laugh it off. He always used to offer all the girls a lift home after nights out drinking. I always refused... Turns out I was right to refuse as a few years later he was arrested for kidnapping and raping a woman in his works van. He fully intended to kill her it transpired. He had a fully fledged murder kit in his van.

I was also once good friends with a lad who I drifted apart from when he went off the rails on alcohol and drugs. Over the years he committed a number of violent crimes, but the worst was where he beat his girlfriend so badly in a tent in the middle of a field, he nearly killed her. Her injuries were like a car crash victims. She was on life support for weeks. That one didn't surprise me as I felt he had the evil in him.

I went to college with a guy who was a bit of a mums boy, bit weird but seemed harmless and friendly. Turns out a few years later he was convicted of downloading child pornography. Not a murderer I know but equally as shocking to me.

I'm pretty sure I could name more events but I'd be here all night!
I think I've just watched the documentary on the first one was it in wales

I think we all have it in us to kill another person. But for the majority that would be in self defence or accidentally (a punch on a night out when drunk). Murder requires planning and intent. I don’t think the average person is capable of murder.

I’ve rechecked my facts. The rapist was 18 as I said, but the poor victim was actually in her 90’s. He was sentenced to 16 years in 2014, after being described as remorseless.

I went to school with someone who stabbed someone to death!
Got into a heated argument after a night out and it escalated.
She claimed self defence and didn't go down. She spent a year inside waiting for trail.
She was always a dick head at school so wasnt supprised when it all came out!
I know the chances are slim but I’m sure I know this person too haha 😂

Was it about two years ago? Name that rhymes with trade plant 😂 Saw her at big Tesco at christmas. I was like 👀
Doesn’t rhyme with trade plant but yes about two years ago!! Maybe a coincidence 🤷‍♀️😂

Jeez, some of these stories are harrowing.

Not a murderer, but I worked with (and sat opposite) a guy who was convicted of creating and distributing child pornography. He was also found to be distributing from his work computer, which is truly bonkers it was under the radar for such a long time.

He lived in our work car park in a caravan for a while, until his arrest, with a vulnerable young woman (I want to say she was 18, but I think she may have been younger), who had physical disabilities and her parents essentially relinquished responsibility to him... I’ve never understood what was going on there.

Nobody at work knew what had happened to him aside from he was ‘off’ and shifts werent in the rota until it hit the papers. He was really weird so, unfortunately, none of us were that shocked.

When I was around 16 my best friend and I dated two boys who were also best friends. We hung out and messed around for months just having fun but then eventually just grew up and moved on. Fast forward a few years and my best friends ex was arrested for murdering his 11 week old baby. He denied it but didn't offer an explanation of how it happened. Baby had broken ribs and spinal/brain injuries. He was sentenced to 9 years!! We weren't in touch when it happened but it totally freaked me out knowing we spent so much time together.

I'm so fascinated by criminal psychology. I worked for legal aid in Australia and have previously defended people who have committed some really serious crimes. I always wanted to question them further to understand what had driven them to commit these brutal crimes, however it'd be totally unprofessional for me to have done that. Some seemed totally 'normal', polite and like they were genuinely lovely people despite their crimes - others gave me chills. Have to say, I definitely don't miss that job one bit...

I haven't known anyone who's ever committed murder before murdering someone though. I can't imagine how it must feel knowing an old school friend, work colleague or ex partner...gosh even family member did that. You've all coped so well.

My old music teacher is in prison for having child pornography on his computer, all young boys which is horrible as he has a young son and at the time of it all coming out was working at an all boys school. Never would have thought it, spent a lot of time alone with him during my music GCSE but then I’m a girl so thankfully he wasn’t interested. Also, my brother went to school with/ was walking on the same route at the same time that Danielle Jones got kidnapped and murdered by her uncle.
scary world
