oh no im so sorry to hear this! Not sure about poems but David Sedaris writes short stories about his life that are very witty and think he's also quite popular with older intellectual types! I'd def recommend Me Talk Pretty One Day which is about him and his partner moving to france.

Oh this is amazing! Thank you so much.

While we are on the subject of poetry....does anyone else just not ‘get’ poetry? I like Tim Key because his poems are funny, but as general rule I just can’t really appreciate it

Sorry to hear about your father in law. I know Tim Key has a book of poems that are very funny? I heard a podcast where he was reading some of them out. But some are quite risqué!
I’ll take a look!

Thanks so much for the suggestions - I’m always blown away by the level of intelligence by posters here and the JM thread so I knew you’d be the right people to ask. ❤

Yup. Totally not for me. I went away with my in laws early in my relationship with my now husband and one evening we were all sitting at the table post dinner and reciting poems came up. I just sat there thinking what is happening.

So glad it’s not just me haha I would SO love to be one of those people that ‘got’ poetry and could recite it from memory at opportune moments

eta i've just looked at goodreads and shocked to see loads of people hate it 😂 i read it years ago but i'm sure it's hilarious!

OMG Yes! I was coming here to say the same! I love this book and have given it to a few people in hospital for various things. Because, as blurst says - short sections and very funny!

Hello you lovely people. I couldn’t think of a better bunch of people to ask - my father in law has recently been diagnosed with testicular cancer and I’d love to send him some bits for when he has bad days. He’s a very intelligent, old boy type doesn’t talk about feelings and doesn’t want to be seen as feeble etc so perhaps a book with intellectual funny poems would be good? I’m just not that way inclined so struggling to think of what to search for.
I’m open to all suggestions!
So sorry to hear your sad news. You are SO thoughtful to think of such a lovely gift that you know he will appreciate.
It‘s not poetry but one of the funniest books I’ve ever read is the “Meaning Of Liff“ by Douglas Adams. It’s a good “dip in and out of“ format, its basically a list of all the funny place names in the UK, using them as names for things that don’t have names. Not everyone’s cup of tea though.

For poetry I really like Edwin Morgan. He wrote a few funny ones, but I can’t find any humour collections of his. This is a good one though, and definitely includes at least a few of his funny ones.

my mum is 70 and can still recite poetry she had to memorise at school, I always wonder the point  (and thinking about it, her dad who left school at 14 could recite random parts of macbeth !)

Sorry to hear about your father-in-law, @LittleMissMuffet - how about a subscription to Private Eye or The Oldie?
good idea - my dad has a subscription to Delayed Gratification I got him years ago (it is only quarterly though) but he loves it. I think looking forward to something is a good idea

i went to a physio for the first time today about my pain from running and they did acupuncture on my leg..has anyone here had acupuncture before? i absolutely hated it, i thought it was going to be relaxing but it made me feel like i was going to be sick!

ETA sorry that was just a bit of a pitiful moan, curious to see if anyone else has had a bad experience from it!

Which is less good when they're buggering off in the opposite direction to the one you want them to go in! Thankfully after a couple of years of being bucket trained they're quite cooperative these days. I do have a sheepdog, but it's much calmer and nicer for them to be moved with a bucket, so mostly that's what we do. They'll get much stroppier once they've got lambs on the ground and that's when I may need some help from Jack, but for now he's on furlough and enjoying it.

How can he be on furlough when he doesn't have HANDS? 😜

I loved that video! Look at them go! I could honestly look at/read your sheep posts all day!

@Alansbigplate sorry I've been too shy to tag you but we hope you're ok, give the black dog a good right jab on the nose from us if he's being a dick, take care x

Can't offer a gift suggestion but so sorry to hear about your father in law @LittleMissMuffet I know it must be even harder at the moment given current circumstances. Keep us posted, and all the best to you, your partner and your families 💕

Thank you for thinking of me - I was doing a Jack and searching my own name after I noticed my guest appearance in Lenny’s avatar 😂 dog is more a little snappy brown one lately but the Christmassy one wore me right out. I hope everyone is doing ok, sorry I’ve not been around much head is in the sand a little bit just to get through this winter x

You've single handedly brought back Alan partridge as a cultural touchstone, will never be able to see Steve Coogan without thinking of you and the Fraus now 😅

Definitely do what's best for you, whether that's just reading sporadically or taking a break, the forum isn't going anywhere! Totally get what you mean, Christmas was rough.

Stay safe, I'm sure we'll speak again soon, but in the meantime look after yourself and put your health first, it's more important than anyone else's entertainment x

Thank you my loves, I’ll try to catch up a little sometime on the MT I was just flirting with the tea on Vonny’s thread instead as it’s so much easier to keep up with ♥

Yup me! The guy said I wasn’t suited to acupuncture. He was a GP and Chinese doctor and acupuncture specialist. I have no fear of needles. Just didn’t work and made me really feel sick.
