My friend sent a video of her kid running around being weird to our group chat this morning and he's actually cute and it was a funny video but this is not my idea of a fun Saturday. I'd just woken up when I watched it (at noon) and she'd had all this running around and shouting going on for hours. That will never be my idea of a fun time

My nephew is staying with us for a few days and I was woken up at 7.15 this morning on a feckin’ Saturday it was a strain. I love him a lot, and I don’t mind when I know he’s off home again on Monday. I can be the fun auntie for a bit, but no way would I want it on a permanent basis.

I think the signs were there with me from being a small child - my parents found a doll some poor misguided soul had bought me buried in the sandpit in the back garden… Nobody was that surprised that I didn’t want children.

I used to try and hide mine in the backs of cupboards or under the bed

Being the auntie is the best. You have all the perks. I love spending time with kids but you know what I love more? Giving them back to their parents. There is nothing like dropping a kid and driving back to your own clean and quiet place. Also, I love having an hefty bank account

I have just read this thread at the right time. Looking after my nephew tonight and he has refused to go to bed, shouting, screaming and throwing toys. I do want kids one day but babysitting this evening has tested that

My nephew used to hate me because his mum (my half sister) let him become a spoilt cat, but I wouldn’t let him have his own way when I would babysit (I’m very stubborn). He didn’t like the fact that I wouldn’t let him get what he wanted!

I had the same when I used to babysit my cousin. Horrible spoiled cat, would scream and shout when something didn't go his way. I'm not even ashamed to say that I smacked him when he scooped out the wrong brand of butter off his sandwich and rubbed it in my curtains

My brother and sister in law bought their feral kids round one Sunday, unbeknownst to us, to test whether we would be suitable babysitters.

When I shouted "No!" when the youngest went to punch my TV with both fists they looked at each other and said "no they won't be suitable"...that's when it came out that we were on trial

I said they clearly weren't going to stop him so I had to. Unless they fancied buying me a new TV after he broke it? They looked a bit sheepish and unsurprisingly never asked us to babysit.

My nephew isn’t spoiled, but I think my brother and his partner are a lot more relaxed with things around the house than I am eg playing and jumping on the furniture etc. So he doesn’t get away with anything like that at our house, but he knows that and is fine with it. He’s really good actually - he knows not to cross me The way I see it, we don’t have children so we can keep our home nice and don’t have everything trashed, so I’m not going to let him do it just because he’s come to stay for a few days.

I cut almost all the hair off mine, coloured her hair pink and then drew tattoos on her limbs

I would send mine to ‘boarding schools’ (the toy box) - I think I knew early on kids weren’t for me.

I also had a Sindy doll at some point, lawd knows why - anyone old enough to remember the Barbie rival? She didn’t last long either, hair hacked, be headed, arms and legs pulled off…

There must’ve been something going on in the back of our minds, even at that young age. Fascinating really.

Disclaimer that I do have kids:
Neither care about baby dolls etc - one got a baby doll from their granny and I have a cracking pic of the doll being joyfully swung in the air by one of its legs.
The other child asked for a pram for her birthday. She took it round the park testing how it fared on two wheels, then one wheel. The doll it came with was left lying in the house while she did this.

Hearing the stories of barbies reminds me when I had them I used to cut off all their hair and say they had cancer. I didn’t even know what cancer was really about back then but most of mine were going through chemo.

I loved Jem. I had the cartoon film on video and I think I had two dolls, I definitely had a Jem doll and I think I had the leader of the Misfits too? They were so cool.

My mom was babysitting my cousin's daughters for 3 days and they ruined the couch by jumping on it. When my mom mentioned it to my cousin she laughed and said "yeah, they do that all the time.". Why would you allow your kids to jump on furniture?!

When I lived alone, my friends and their toddler stayed with me. Repeated instances of him throwing my things about or playing with items that could have injured him - parents did nothing. I did not invite them back.

This is why I'm glad my husband and I live somewhere that's not easily accessible for friends and family - I don't want their kids trashing our place
