I have been trying to find the name of a book for years that I read as a youngster (probably 9ish so around 1984). And absolutely cannot find it but the information i have is so vague.

It was about a little girl from i think the carribean but could be wrong and was about her family life. It had the most lovely illustrations (though I could be imagining them 😂).

I have sent emails and made calls to try and find the name of this book but had zero luck. Anyone have any idea on how I could find it?

I had similar with another book I read when younger but managed to find that one and it wasnt as good as I remember lol (hear the children calling).

Any advice in tracking books with limited information would be great.
Can you remember any of the characters' names, or locations in the book? Sometimes you can chain those search terms and find the book.

Ooh I’ve no idea I’m afraid but you’ve reminded me to ask about a book I’ve spent the last 15 or so years trying to track down!

I remember reading a book as a child (I’d say probably from 1990 onwards) and it was possibly about a brother and sister who found themselves at the edge of some kind of wood/hedge. They decided to go through into it and the boy got a thorn in his foot (I think) and as they went into the wood there was an evil witch type person, possibly a lion (he may have been the one with the thorn in his foot). I’ve no idea on character names, places, title, author etc and what I remember is totally vague but it’s killed me for years not knowing what it is. I’ve asked in so many places over the years and the only suggestion that ever comes back is The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe but it’s definitely not that one.
Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry I can’t help but there is a Facebook group which specialises in helping people find things when they can only remember parts! Perhaps try there 😊

edit - I don’t know if the link has worked but it’s called “What was the thing?”and it has 41.4K members if that helps you find it!

I've just started my second Agatha Christie of the week "Murder on the Links", it's a Poirot and I read The Man in the Brown Suit the other day.
I bloody love Agatha Christie books.

There's a subreddit called r/whatsthatbook that's really good at tracking these things down. They do try get some more info from you like the cover etc if you can remember it.

There was one I asked about that they couldn't find but someone shared on another thread what places they used for their searches and that really helped as I managed to find it myself on one of them. Think Google books was one but can't find the post that had the list including the one I actually used!

Could it be The Magician's Nephew? It's part of the same series as The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe so still has the lion and the witch but it has 2 children and a magic woods.

Thank you but it’s not that one. I had the full set of Narnia books in a box set and this was a single book on its own - I really wish I could remember more about it. One day I’m going to find it and realise it was no where near as good my heads made it out to be the longer the search has gone on.

I’m really racking my brains and the lion may have been a wolf or a fox. There was some of witch/hag character in it and there was a race against time to get help for the boy (or the lion/wolf/fox) to get help for the thorn in his foot as it was making him ill. I’m sure the cover was either black & white or quite muted colours and showed the boy and girl through the hedge/trees. It’s driving me mad thinking of it!

Isn’t that a fable? The Lion’s Paw or The Lion and the Mouse? Could it be something based off that?

I’m not entirely sure if I’m combining two stories in my head - hence the not knowing if it was the boy or a lion that had the thorn in his foot. I know of the The Lion’s Paw fable but I’m convinced this was a different story altogether. I’m pretty certain there some kind of animal guide that either had the thorn in themselves or helped the boy who did.

I spent years looking for a book a read as a kid, this was it, it’s a 3 part and I adored it, released in 1988 and santa brought it for Christmas, I spent Christmas Day reading it and pretending I was one of the characters 🙈

this actually makes me heart hurt to remember 😂 god I was obsessed with books.

i love the flow of this thread so much 🥰

Has anyone read Bridgeton? Loved the series but not sure what the book is like??
I have just finished the second book.

They are quite different to the series. A lot of what happened in series 1 doesn't happen in either book 1 or 2.

I watched the first episode then read the whole of book 1 then went back to watch the whole season. My friend who watched the season and is now reading the book is struggling with the book.

However I find them quite enjoyable. Worth a read if you enjoy the series in my opinion

I would day buy the first one and give it a shot. If you don't like don't read the rest.

There are a lot of differences but I really enjoyed the book as some chapters are from Simon's perspective so it was fun to get a different take on things. I think it made their relationship a bit more interesting.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions on trying to find the book I read when I was younger, really appreciate it. Unfortunately I barely remember anything other than I think it was beautifully illustrated (I could even have imagined that 😂). And I think it was either set in Guyana or Ghana 🤦‍♀️ but again I could have imagined that too.

I’ve been doing some searching without any luck. I remember years ago one of our elderly library customers asked me if I could find a book she’d enjoyed in her youth. All she could tell me was it was about a brother and sister going blackberrying. I saw it as a challenge but never got close to finding it, the internet was only in its infancy then so it was harder 🤦🏼‍♀️

Wierdly I think I read that blackberrying book (far too late to be of any use to you now 😂) - it rings such a bell - Alison Uttley?
I once spent so long trying to track a much loved childhood book and the joy of finding it in the end was immense - it was The Little Broomstick by Mary Stewart. Thoroughly recommend for children. The forerunner of both Harry Potter and The Worst Witch stories. Children's books years ago seemed a bit weirder, if that makes sense, like the Alan Garner books. Very strange.

If only I’d had this thread then! You may well be right.
