I’m new to this thread. Absolutely love reading but tend to go through phases where I will obsessively read and finish a book in 24 hours then not read another for weeks

So sad. They were my only connection to books when we lived overseas. But their cheap books and free postage to everywhere in the world must have been a hard model to sustain.
Book Depository were an independent business initially and then Amazon bought them. Theyre closing down now as they can sell everything via amazon.
Support your local book stores if you can, even larger chains to a certain extent or all we will have left is Amazon.

It’s just annoying how much more expensive even larger chains are compared to Amazon. Charging £8.99 for a book in Waterstones that’s £5 on Amazon is only going to get one result, I don’t think the price of being a store is much of a defence because most supermarkets charge £4.50/£5 or do 2 for £8 on paperbacks, and The Works only charges £5/£6 a paperback. I’d love to go in to a local shop and help them out but it’s difficult when buying 4 books will cost an extra £15-£20. I buy a lot of mine now in The Works, they have a decent loyalty scheme as well.

I was reading an article on The Guardian this morning about an issue that as an author, albeit no longer very active, is really quite close to my heart. This touches on something that affected me personally when my own book had recently been published, and indeed affects a lot of authors I know. ...
Oh I completely understand that and I do get that not everyone can afford to shop independently.
Supermarkets can sell them at cost price or not much more as they make profit on other things. Whereas book stores only profit is books. They also cannot buy in the volumes that supermarkets can.
Dont get me wrong I buy a lot at Amazon so Im not preaching but I adore going to a book store and seeing what they have. Quite often the books I want are only available in book stores or amazon. For example Ive been after 'Send Nudes' for ages. I finally got it in Waterstones. Same price as Amazon.
Waterstones loyalty is good to have even if you dont shop there that often.
Waterstones loyalty is a money maker. On the weekends they do triple points if you spend £100 you get £40 back. I know £100 is a lot upfront but if you save up buying books. You can easily do it. I got 16 books for £100 last time, so they cost an average of £6.60 each and I got £40 back.
Book prices here in Australia are insane. We don’t have much choice (no Waterstones, Barnes and Noble etc). If you don’t want to be paying crazy prices, book depository was the best option (and Amazon).

also i love the whole vibe of a waterstones and even better if it’s one with a cafe!
I feel sad not being able to support smaller stores because I’m so committed to ebooks nowadays, and even if I wanted to buy physical copies I don’t have the space for them now

ETA - and welcome by the way! This thread got Mr back into reading again after a 6 month slump!
Reading it at the moment, a few pages left to go. Its not bad but the last quarter is a bit tit.
I've been making a conscious effort to read books I purchased ages ago and haven't actually started. I have finished The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave after flying through it! I picked it up a couple of times but never actually went past the first page. I double checked and I brought this book 4th January 2022 I've also seen it is being made into a tv series released in a couple of weeks so I'll definitely check it out!

charity shops aren’t really known for being the best place to get books but you can sometimes pick up a bargain (not usually great for new releases though or if you’re looking for something specific).I'm really gutted Book Depository are closing. I use them quite a lot for academic books which are always a lot cheaper than in book shops - the free postage for me was the best thing because most of the books I buy are fairly heavy and cost a fortune to post.
I know we should all be supporting our local book shops and all that but when you see a book online that is less than half the price its going for in a bricks and mortar shop its a bit of a no brainer. I could get two books there for the price of one in my local bookstore.

I get a lot of my books from Asda! They have a great 2 for £8 deal on their paperbacks. Also either The Works or Waterstones, I live quite rurally and we don't have many bookstores, just Waterstones or The Works and supermarkets (even Aldi have started selling books!)
