Actually, speaking of book to screen adaptations, does anyone have a most loved or loathed?

The End of the Affair is always first to my mind. I thought it captured the novel beautifully, the casting, music, cinematography, as near to perfect as possible.

I don't watch adaptations of books I really loved but....

One Flew Over The Cuckoo Nest.
Room.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Are all decent

I really enjoyed the film room, more than the book actually

Wouldnt say i ‘loathed’ but was very disappointed with ‘ready player one’ - they didnt really stick to the best parts of the book or the riddles and clues which was what made the book so great to me.

normal people was way better than the book imo.

i love brooklyn (by colm toibin) very much but the film was actually better - beautifully done and elevated the parts of the story that could have done with more detail on the page, in particular the ending.

i like jane austen but i also feel a lot of the adaptations of her work help the affection towards it. the screen versions show off her wit and style without the sometimes dryness of her writing. the matthew macfadyen pride and prejudice in particular is 👌🏻 (he is the best mr darcy don’t reply to me i know i’m right 😉)

Oh has anyone watched Where The Crawdads Sing after reading the book? I struggled with the first half of the book but loved the second half and ending! Not yet watched the film 🙂

i enjoyed crawdads after loathing the book - thought daisy edgar-jones acted circles around the two male leads though! it seemed to work better for me on screen and it is very beautifully filmed and sets the atmosphere well. my issues with the plot still remained but i liked it.

i’ve watched it so much 💙 the actor who plays tony is so lovely and i like that it gives a proper closure to the ending, whereas the book felt bittersweet to me.

I always think tv adaptations of books work better than films because they have more time to play with and can do storylines justice.

I’ve mentioned it here before but the adaptation of My Brilliant Friend is wonderful tv. The 1996 BBC Pride and Prejudice will always be the best version in my opinion, it’s so true to the book. And going way back to the 80s the Anne of Green Gables with Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie is still my comfort telly!

oh the tv adaptation of my brilliant friend is amazing! i enjoyed the books but found the writing style (or the translation) very cold - the series adds so much vitality into it and the cast are great.

and omg anne of green gables! i am in love with gilbert blythe to this DAY. thoroughly enjoyed anne with an e on netflix too.

For fans of Brooklyn, there is a sequel on the way.

My least favourite adaptation was My Sister's Keeper because they totally changed the ending and I hate it when they do that.

Favourite is the Game of Thrones series, there are some issues but given the sheer volume of stuff they needed to cover I think they did a great job.

GASP!!!! i hope it’s a happy sequel because i love tony so much. i don’t think any book has ever expressed homesickness (or a sort of longing to both be at home and away from home) in exactly the same way. i need to reread it now.

my sister’s keeper made me MAD. the ending was what made the book for me because, while i get why people called it a cheap shock, it was such a rug pull that it changed the whole theme. they should have kept it.

I absolutely love the movie. I cry buckets every time I see the scene where she tells her mother she is going back to New York, her poor mum is absolutely broken 😭😭😭 One of my kids emigrated not too long ago so I might be a bit sensitive to it but it just gets me every time.

I saw a TikTok with Jodi Picoult yesterday who said the writer promised her he’d keep the ending from the book then she heard later on that the ending was being changed. She stormed onto set demanding it to be changed back and pretty much got escorted off set. She knew the ending was what made the story work and by taking that away the story lost its spark. Although the film is good it definitely lacks the spark the book has.
