🙄 her motives were so obvious right from the start. Do you think she thought nobody would ever call her out on any of this?

For context:

The figure represents 13.68 per cent of the charity’s total first-year income.

A salary of £150,000 would be comparable to the RSPCA, which paid its top earner £150,007 in 2021 and recorded an annual income of £142m – more than 100 times the Captain Tom Foundation’s £1.1m. That salary placed the RSPCA 98th on a list of the top 100 highest-paying charities produced last year by industry publication Third Sector.

I know that many of this saw this coming but this surely has to be the biggest, most opportunistic and most shameless grift in modern British history?

I hope there’s a Panorama or something in the works about this as I still don’t think that the scale of the awfulness has quite cut through to the Average Joe.

What a truly awful group of people.

Moving old people from a home to a care home can kill them, let alone taking them on a transatlantic flight during a global pandemic. No wonder he got pneumonia.

It’s like mass hysteria on social media, folks indulging in performative grieving and trying to out-sad one another.

I’m getting a very good idea of what it would have been like had Diana died in the time of the smartphone.

He never had a legacy in the first place, it’s all smoke and mirrors concocted by PR agent that is Hannah, she was the one contacting all the media outlets.

I doubt very much he thought up the idea of the laps, it wasn’t even his garden to lap in the first place, he was a puppet in all of this.

The only thing he really achieved was to live to 100 and outlast the bigger heroes of the war imo.
Yes there was nothing special about him or his 'achievements'. He served in the war, so did millions of others. He just happens to have lived to 100 and hence been one of the 'last survivors' (I'm guessing there's not more than a few hundred left). As said earlier in this thread, age doesn't turn you into a cute and cuddly teddy bear.

He was deified/eulogised beyond belief

The family is making it sound like he was bloody Winston Churchill or the Queen (not that I'm a massive fan of either), the 250000 birthday cards etc have no real historical value

So sad for the honourable gentleman Sir Tom, having such a grifting daughter
Honourable? Gentleman?
He told the world that left his first wife (who was deceased so she couldn’t give her side of the story) because she didn’t give him sex. Obviously that was disclosed to imply he was the perfect husband and she was entirely to blame.
Yes, such an “honourable gentleman!” 🙄

If my dad/relative was a living ww2 veteran I'd have been seriously fucking annoyed seeing Tom Moore getting a knighthood while other vets did not. For walking around his garden and raising funds for which the govt should be funding anyway with our taxes? Yes I realise it was 'NHS charities' not directly the NHS itself but still shouldn't the NHS be providing these services? What the fuck is my tax money being spent on? I pay for the NHS already, not paying twice through charity. It needs to be reformed and govt has a responsibility here. Leaving it to 'charity' is convenient for avoiding responsibility

I also wonder had he not been a veteran, would the story have got quite as much mileage and would the knighthood have been given?

My views. Take them or leave them.

Pro’s
• He served our country & did good for the NHS. You cannot fault him for that.

• He was a character, very sweet & lived a very long, good life.

Con’s
• He went on holiday (no doubt forced by his family) in the middle of a pandemic when it was advised still to remain home. No we were not in a lockdown but we were in tier systems & the advice was very straight forward. Stay at home. How does anyone know they crossed tiers to go on holiday?

He has received recognition & applause but what about the other 100,000 people who died with no remembrance? More to the point, he had family around him at his last hours. He was very fortunate to have his family around him, when many, many others had to die on there own.

• Celebrities have fallen for his & his families charm, but again - what about the others?

• Probably should be highlighted in the Barbados paragraph above but over Christmas my family were on our own, my grandparents on there own. But yet his family were formed together, in a foreign country NO QUESTIONS ASKED....

so please all I ask is - how is it fair?

I believe he caught pneumonia by his immune system struggling to deal with such huge swings in the weather going from here to there and back here. I have no doubt if he hadn't gone abroad he would still be alive and well today. Cliff and Russ were not the only two he met. He met Jofra Archer and Chris Jordan who play Cricket for England......

Along with those two he got to meet (also with no social distancing) a lot of the great West Indies players from the 1970s.....

Sorry but where is the social distancing?
Oh I forgot.

How crass are these particular posts. It’s almost as if they were rubbing everyone else’s noses in it.

ETA: I don’t know about anyone else but I wasn’t able to spend Christmas with my family that year as we were in a lockdown bubble. Fucking crassness of this.

The arrogance and crassness of that post sums up exactly what they are.

People all over the world were missing their normal Christmas while this lot were living it up in Barbados. You couldn't make it up. I know it's been said many times but in addition to the craziness and carelessness of taking an elderly man on such a holiday, at such a time, had he become ill while on holiday, they would be placing an extra burden on the health system there.

As for them being allowed to visit him freely, when he was ill, once again, why the fuck was that allowed when thousands of others were left to die alone as their heartbroken families weren't allowed to be with them. 😡.

When it comes to the film, if Hannah is an executive producer you know Captain Tom’s wartime experience will be played out like this:

I've said here before I bet they genuinely thought they'd get on the same level as The Anne Frank Foundation or something. And I don't think he ever had a worldwide impact, not even European. When you look back it all got really tacky really quickly.
They called him 'the world's grandfather'. He was never any such thing, nor was he the nation's grandfather.

One of the newspapers must have phoned the council because the story seems to have moved on in many of them, to being about how she never actually got planning permission for the dodgy pool and spa complex, the application featuring his name was a retrospective one, which was turned down, as was an appeal, so she has been told to demolish it. Don't think that was being reported this morning.

LOL. It's all catching up with her.

Is it right that he ended up with one of Micheal Vaughan’s England caps after his grandson ‘reached out to him?’ If so I hope his family have the decency to return it!
I bloody hate that expression.

The only people allowed to "reach out" is any member of the 4 Tops.

Ever.

I’ve seen people calling for a day of mourning for Captain Tom. There have been well over 100,000 people that have died with COVID this past year! That’s all of those families devastated. We’ve had young parents leaving kids behind, old people dying alone and even at least one child has died alone in hospital with no one holding their hand. Are these people off their heads? It’s hysterical behaviour.

Hannah says going to Barbados was her Dad's dream, it was on his bucket list.

This is what he said in his own book. He never even mentioned Barbados.

Has the PM spoken to families of the 100,000 others that have passed?!? No, thought not. I’m sad he’s passed away but we’re constantly told we’re all in this together when it’s totally evident we’re not. Why is their pain more important than everyone else’s?!?
What about the frontline workers that have died doing their job? What about the railway worker that was spat on and died shortly after? What about people that have had no one to turn to for the past year but followed the rules? I genuinely find this upsetting. I should probably come off this thread before I say something horrible about 'Captain Sir Sainthood'.
