White Allyship

Just watched this and it’s really made me think and reflect a lot and I know others in the thread may benefit for watching, really listening and reflecting

Why is it now that we’re seeing BLM everywhere, do we feel the need to stand up all of a sudden?

For me, honestly, I think it’s because I never saw anyone different from me, my privilege has made me feel like I’m equal to everyone and I feel upset and ashamed of myself to be honest. I am not the same.
Could've written this myself. I have had the same emotions. I felt guilty about it, that I only ever spoke up about the issue when there had been a very public death that was being spoken about on the media and had caused protests. This one has really made me realise that I should've always done it.

That's definitely my white privilege and honestly? I think it's also my white privilege that's also making me feel so guilty, because it isn't about ME and I shouldn't be making it about me. It may have taken me too long but I can now work on myself and always speak up on these issues. I don't think it's uncommon for white people to be realising this now.

Don't want to turn this into purely a video sharing thread or anything but this one truly broke my heart.
To people who are most concerned about protesters causing trouble, what a load of bullshit.

There are so many bizarre things about this, but the most unsettling for me is the sheer number of police officers standing there bearing what are effectively sticks to beat people with. They’re not using them, but they all them drawn, like an army. And the beating with sticks is horribly symbolic.

Sandra Bland was the case that really struck me too. There’s so much need for change 💗
It really struck me deep. I remember trying to find out so much info on it, and just kept thinking how on earth has this happened? I kept thinking about her family and friends. Like if I couldn’t get my head round it, how could they possibly....and then I realised, to some degree it wasn’t as shocking to them, because they had come to almost expect death as an outcome, to being stopped by police!!

I agree. As a white person if I was pulled over it wouldn’t even cross my mind that I would be killed.

And the fact that she was already dead when the mug shots were taken... the whole case just really stuck with me, I remember how horrified I was reading things as if it happened yesterday. I think I was always aware of the police brutality and racism towards POC (I didn’t realise my impact though) but that was the first time I was deeply upset by it and realised my privilege.

I watched 13th on Netflix this evening and would highly recommend this as a starting place for anyone who wants to educate themselves on the issues at hand. It’s a real eye opener and had me in tears by the end.

A really powerful video that I’ve re-posted on my Instagram. This is a reality for families of POC. White privilege is never having to worry about having these conversations with our children. NOBODY should have to have these conversations.
That video broke me and I shared it also. It’s so powerful. How can anyone think this is ok.

Are we not able to have peaceful protests? How what is happening now is going to make any difference, if anything when I see it, it just makes me more angry and it's all so pointless.

How can more deaths be OK?
There are so many peaceful protests happening all over America right now and across Europe too. I won’t deny there has been rioting too, but it’s naive to assume that all of that is coming from the BLM movement. A lot of it comes from people who infiltrate movements like this to dismantle them from the inside.

Last post on this, Just seen this posted elsewhere, there's a protest and then there's crime.
You’re quite purposefully burying your head in the sand with this stuff. Your fake concern about covid when a report released today states that BAME are far more likely to die from COVID that had absolutely 0 suggestion from the government on how to help and protect BAME is a bit of a joke. Most protests and most protestors are looting or being violent. High profile Protests often attract those who seek to destroy property at any cost, there are so many examples of this. And honestly I do not want to see another drop of blood spilled but I spent today researching police violence and I am emotionally drained, I cannot imagine how it feels to face this, to be scared for your children, to never be able to step back into the comfortable white world I live in. I can see how all that pain,
anger and frustration can build up into this.

I will never agree with the violence that is being shown in USA, the looting of shops, how is that OK, by supporting the movement you are supporting the violence and death that's comes with it.
You’re missing the point.

It’s not the looting that should stop - it’s the killing of innocent POC.

As a white person I wanted to say to anybody on here mixed race (I don't know the correct term without offending anyone) that I'm really sorry for any bad experiences or situations you've experienced due to the colour of your skin by a white person or any other person (as on Mumsnet there's a thread on going rn I read that mixed race/black people suffer racism from all the other non-white cultures as well as white). I apologize for any abuse you've suffered and times you've felt really uncomfortable about simply being a different colour to others and I hope that this shocking incident doesn't spark hatred towards white people, because as you saw most of us stand against racism.

As a person of colour who isn’t black, I do know some of the struggles being faced today in terms of racism. I live in the UK and immigration here has been much more recent compared to the US and so I feel like each ethnic group has faced racism but not to the extent of black people and police brutality. If the police here had access to guns; I really do think we would have seen a rise in police brutality because it does happen here but just not often. Compared to the US, I feel like in the UK covert racism is more prevalent where people will make comments of you “being different” but it isn’t so obvious in comparison to using actual slurs. What frustrates me is that the older generation will avoid saying “Oh you’re black or brown” and instead opt for “coloured or different skin colour” which in my opinion is worse. At school, teachers and staff would often point out that my ethnic background was the reason I wasn’t the same as everyone else.

We need more of an community discourse on racism and one thing that I want to tackle is casual racism, I’ve seen it happen so much that I just can’t believe it occurs. I just don’t want influencers to post about BLM and then the next day forget about it and keep posting about their lives without having an active discussion. We need to talk more about matters, on social media and in real life. We need to educate ourselves and read books ( l am currently reading Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People about Race)

I think with this new generation being brought up by social media I hope we can get the change and strive to have a positive society. But this won’t happen by wishing alone, we need to talk more and not just for a social media trend like influencers I know have done.

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me.

For those in the UK, the following article is really helpful if you want to do something proactive. There is even a link to an email template you can copy and paste to send send to your MP . I have just done this, it took less the 5 minutes. Looking at my MPs voting record I don't know what difference this will make, but we don't know if we don't try!

Yesterday I was at work and I wanted to start the discussion but I was faced with a wall of ignorance. I get that they were angry that people were protesting due to Covid, I get it but really I don't....and I work in an Hospital. I heard sayings at work well it's an american problem, it's trend following or they only want to loot and break things. I said No and stop! This is a problem everywhere and I could tell my black colleague was glad I didnt just let them say it ...

I also tried to start a conversation today in our daily team catch up call. I was talking about my own experience with previously being quite ignorant to racism and white privilege but how I’ve educated myself. I was trying to encourage people to take a bit of time this week to read or watch something and recognise that now is the time to be actively anti-racist. Nobody engaged and the conversation quickly moved on.

Very disappointed that my managers didn’t even join in. You only have to walk round my office to see people of so many different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities. I would have hoped they’d be supporting our POC colleagues at the minute.

The whole notion of white privileged is vile. There is no tangible evidence we have privilege and plenty that we have disadvantages.

The victims of Muslim grooming gangs were overwhelmingly white and selected for this reason. These children were called white cunts and white whores while being brutally gang raped. Their skin colour disadvantaged them.

The 70,000 white people who have been tortured to death in South Africa were selected for the colour of their skin.

White people like that Springwatch presenter can get openly sacked for the colour of their skin. No other race suffers that in the U.K.

No other race are not allowed to speak on racial issues that affect them.

No other people fight for other races like white people do. It’s pathetic to see you all wringing your hands and tying your mind in knots to internalise and justify anti-white racial hatred. Then actually feel superior to other white people for doing so. You’re wasting your energy on people who hate you with every fibre of their being and wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire. Not only that but your supporting the destruction and theft of the properties and businesses of completely innocent people. This is just an excuse for “wilding” as they call it.

The reason we don’t feel afraid when arrested is not because of white privilege, but because the police in this country are generally well-trained and not power-tripping maniacs.

The fact is that police in the USA kill far too many people, not just blacks. The only reason it appears that more black people get killed is simply because they are more likely to be arrested in the first place. Studies show police are actually more careful when dealing with black people. You can sneer at All Lives Matter all you like, but there is never media attention when white people are killed by non-white cops. You don’t even know it happens.

They should be peacefully protesting for US police to stop killing in general, and for specific policy changes, rather than just looting and generalised shrieking.

Woah woah woah. White people are SO privileged.

As a white person, in America or otherwise, you would never have to explain to your child what to do if they are pulled over. You would never expect them to be pulled over and not return hone. You would never expect them to reach for their driving license and not return home. You would never expect them to be killed for forgetting to indicate, or using what a cashier thought was a fake note.

We are not knocked back from nightclubs because we are white, we do not have people cross to the other side of the road because they don’t want to walk past us. If we don’t get a job, the colour of our skin is not a factor in that decision.

We are SO PRIVILEGED to not have these worries. We don’t see people of our own race plastered over social media being killed every day because of the colour of our skin. I have NEVER seen an image of a white person who has been killed by the police in an inhumane manor circulate my social media... and that’s because it simply doesn’t happen due to the fact that they are white.

POC can’t end something that they did not start. It is our job, as white people, to end the racism.

Please please educate yourself.

Oh please 🙄

NO ONE has to worry about the nonsense in your second paragraph in the U.K. EVERYONE does in the US. It is a different country. That is my UK privilege, not white.

And yes actually I did learn as a child what to do when a police car wants you to pull over. Oh, the suffering 🙄

No one in the UK is legally knocked back from nightclubs because of their race. Although I’d like to see you trying to get into a black nightclub.

White people are legally excluded from jobs all the time, it’s called positive discrimination. Examples: police, TV presenters, media, medicine degree placements (which lead to being a doctor; then they claim we rely on non-white for the NHS despite us deliberately being excluded). They also specifically limit placements of foreign European (ie, white) students. We are the only race that it’s legal to do this to.

If white people cross the road it’s because we are statistically likely to be victimised. I would rather be the race that has hurt feelings than the race who are targeted for rape and muggings.

Even if the nonsense you wrote was true and applicable in the U.K., I would still take being wary of police and rejected from nightclubs, over being gang raped as a child or tortured to death.
