About immigration, someone asked why don't they seek shelter closer to home. They actually do, most immigrants escape to nearby countries. The amount we receive in Europe is a joke compared to places like Iraq or Turkey.

There's nothing stopping you from posting your own "interesting, controversial, unpopular opinions" though ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

Why rely on others to start a conversation? Surely, you could start one yourself.
Erm .. I think I just did post my unpopular opinion.. and it was supposed to be tongue in cheek.
As you were

My unpopular opinion is I come on here ready to read interesting, controversial , unpopular opinions and it's mainly just an endless loop of animal/food/celebrity/biscuit likes and dislikes plus dissing of the latest woke trending bandwagon subject where most people agree with the poster anyway so it's usually a popular opinion.
I think there's only one thread on here that fulfils that criteria šŸ˜‚

Those are people really fleeing for their lives. Those that pass a whole lot of safe countries and then jump in an expensive boat being chaperoned across the channel are not the same. 99,9% of the latter are young men and the media never show those, they only show those arriving with old, female or the very young.

I have always said we need immigration ( my mum's family were Austrian Jews who fled here) and we all ways have and will but the difference between the 60s/ 70s and now is back then they had jobs to come to, we built new social housing all the time. Why are we letting in so many people to be street homeless or those with families to go to the top of the housing list? There is an agenda and people really need to open their eyes and see it.
I had my eyes open at the beginning of lockdown, I was trying to prove my brother wrong but proved myself wrong. Those men I see being loaded onto busses made my blood turn cold. The arrogance in their faces looking at the camera all between the ages of 20 /35 ish they didnt look like refugees to me, Ive seen refugees before and these were not that.

Ok this might be a controversial one and i will probably get flammed but its what this thread is for.

people posting about unfortunate circumstances in their life e.g miscarriage or Cancer.

now- these are of course very sad and everyone should be able to talk about it openly and share with who they want, what I donā€™t agree with is making it a photo opportunity, to me it takes it away from the seriousness of the issue.

there is an influencer who recently posted about jer cancer diagnosis and i am genuinely sad for her but found her crying video that goes with it a bit weird, and really not needed, Its almost like the video was made because she knew sheā€™d get the shares and clicks

There are people on Twitter who make all their posts about their illness. I do have sympathy; but like you've said, there seems to be a photo opportunity.

Just because someone doesn't agree with gay peoples lifestyle choices, it doesn't make them a homophobe!!

Which is exactly what you would expect, given that the purpose of asylum is to flee persecution at home in the first safe haven you arrive in. But anyhow here is a list of refugees per country of origin. Letā€™s take a deep dive.

Ok the top nationalities as you would expect. Afghanistan. Pretty obvious. I could think of nothing worse than living in an extreme theocratic state. Syria. Again obvious. The CAR and DRC. War torn hellholes since gaining independence from France and Belgium respectively (yet their woes are often bizarrely blamed on the British empire). The socialist paradises of Vietnam and Venezuela. Sudan and South Sudan. A legacy of years of squabbling between Egypt, the Ottoman Empire and the British. Although the violent repression of South Sudan was all post independence.

All as you would expect but some of the other countries on that list do make you think WTF and can lend the impression that the refugee system is being ever so slightly abused. For instance over 1000 refugees from the Czech Republic and 4000 from Hungary. Arenā€™t both countries part of the EU and supposed to guarantee human rights? And if they donā€™t guarantee those rights for thousands of citizens how the hell did they legitimately qualify for the bloc? In fact there are a handful of asylum seekers ā€œfleeing persecutionā€ from The EU countries and the UK every year. Can you think of any reason why? 35 from New Zealand. Pretty boring iā€™m sure but I donā€™t associate them with repressive policies. 5 from San Marino. Has there been a civil war raging on a mountain top in Italy for all these years? Almost ten times as many fleeing Romania than Paraguay? I guess Ceausescau beats Stroessner in the dictator legacy top trumps.

In short I donā€™t think we should believe absolutely everyone when they request asylum. Do you?

I donā€™t like Grease. The horror on peopleā€™s faces when I say that.
I also canā€™t stand Mary Poppins.

Going out for brunch or breakfast is boring, worst meal to go out and spend money on in a restaurant.
Laughing at this as Iā€™m on my way to brunch in Dubai currently šŸ˜‚ Iā€™m hoping itā€™s not boring but agree they usually fall flat šŸ˜‚
