The thing that annoys me is when you've bought something, say a swimming costume but then have swimming costumes advertised to you for the next 2 weeks. Like I've bought one duck off now, show me something new. If they're gonna stalk you to create the adverts, they should know when you've made the purchase and then stop them.

Sorry messed up the quotes

"Exactly, people so quick to jump in the trend of slavery and then swan of to Dubai built on the backs of modern slaves. All you have to do there is open your eyes and see the African and Asian servants kept against their wills.
I watched a documentary on African women forced into slavery there and it's horrifying"

They keep their own women, prisoners, while literally shitting on/in Weston women I wondered what the attraction was for so many single women to holiday in Dubai £££ to be shat on.

Another gripe, why so many are banned from youtube, FB, Twitter for speaking a different narrative and yet sick stuff like Dubai porta-potties etc and child porn are still there.
It’s really sick. But celebrities and influencers will keep going because they keep being paid to promote that shithole.
I really wish some big names would take a stand but the Arabs has their fingers in ALL the pies.

It's certainly nowhere we would ever visit. Sandy shithole where women have no rights whatsoever, the Men can hit and punch the Women with the Nations blessing, and where modern slavery exists today.
I detest anyone who bigs the sandy shitehole up.

The trouble is, a lot of young women equate Dubai with glamour, money, designer clothes. They can’t see behind the tawdry facade.

I couldn't give a toss about slavery in the 1700s or 1800s etc. It's 2022! Who the hell cares how their ancestors were living 250 years ago?
And in using it to moan/attack/ get reparations today over it.
People need to take action over modern slavery ( which still exists)
Exactly - I find people are focused on slavery that happened centuries ago and nothing is said about slavery happening today. I think this could be because a large percentage of slavery is happening in mon white countries so people can’t use ‘the white race are slave masters’ trope.
Not saying we shouldn’t learn about historic slavery, but it shouldn’t blind us to slavery still happening today.

Modern slavery is bloody frightening and we should all be taking action to stop it. The problem is, it’s hidden. The slaves themselves may not even realise they’re slaves.

It really annoys me when I think of the fact the World Cup is been played in a place like Qatar whose labourers have very few rights and are routinely exploited. When players are protesting on the pitch for blm it’s seemingly very hypocritical to be willing to play in Qatar. Then again a lot of them go to places like Dubai on holiday. It’s not a place I would ever want to visit.

Hidden in plain sight such as car washes, takeaways and nail bars

I was in Qatar briefly (stopover on the way to Australia) and I’ve never felt such a sense of quiet menace. It was disturbing.

Same, I had a stopover in Abu Dhabi and Dubai for fights to and from Australasia and they are not places I have any desire to visit

same, though sadly i had to spend longer there than a stopover.

there’s a huge us naval base there and so a lot of the more westernised bars are basically brothels for forces. a lot of silent groups of women standing against the walls waiting to be “chosen”. like you say, i’ve never had such a deep sense of foreboding in a place ever.

dubai is the epitome of tackiness but with absolutely no charm whatsoever, all built on the deaths of thousands of workers. i judge anyone who goes there on holiday and hate that f1 (a sport i love) is so firmly in their pockets :(

Is there any culture in Dubai or Qatar, etc? It seems its all modern and flash but that’s not my sort if thing. But places with genuine Middle Eastern culture can be very dangerous, especially for western women.

I knew a girl who lived in Qatar for work and the disgusting things men would do to/near her and her colleagues was shocking. No way could I tolerate that level of harassment and objectification 🤢

I don’t get how a society and religion and culture can be *so* backwards in 2022.

My cousins girlfriend actually worked freelance for whoever organises the World Cup. UEFA? I’m not a football follower as you may be able to tell. Years ago she had to go to Qatar and she said it was absolutely terrifying and that men treat her like tit. She is a very forthright woman and literally felt like she had to just accept the abuse or she’d end up in prison, or worse. She quit the contract when she got home.

felt similar on a stop over for refueling in Bahrain. The learing looks and whispering amongst the security guards when we entered the airport made me feel really uncomfortable.

Is it possible for people to ride a bike without dressing like and/or acting like they are in the Tour de France?

I mean, IT IS possible to ride a bike without wearing Lycra (just sayin').

Also, feverishly waving me to pass you > in my car > on a corner is NOT going to make me put my life in jeopardy.
So, you can relax Lance Armstrong ... I'll pass you when I pass you.

I once saw a comment from a woman who had a stopover in Qatar. She left the airport for only an hour to look around and was viciously raped

Not forgetting grooming gangs. It’s still ongoing and the police often punish the girls for trying to report and accuse them of racism.

It’s all about attacking white people, not actually getting justice.

China are practically colonising Africa as we speak, but they wouldn’t dare criticise a non-white group.

Also, white people are not responsible for slavery. We did not “enslave” anyone; the Africans enslaved their own people, and traded with outsiders those captured during their endless local wars. It was said that the currency of Africa was “slave”. The people trafficked were already slaves.

Throughout all of recorded history, outsiders have always associated sub-Saharan Africa with slavery and traded their slaves. This is why: it was their own system. It only officially ended (still ongoing illegally in some regions) with European colonisation. White people literally ended slavery! Modern people don’t realise that slavery was common and pretty much throughout history, all over the world until anti-slavery movement in the last 2 centuries.

The UK paid for every last slave to be freed from their empire, only finished paying off that national debt in 2014. We have not benefitted from slavery in any way.

In the USA, only 3% of white people owned slaves. Much higher percentages of free black people owned slaves. Native Americans also owned them.

There were white slaves in the Caribbean, known as redlegs from their sunburn. Rihanna’s grandmother us a white person descended from slavery.

Finally 3 million white Europeans, many female sex slaves, were taken as slaves by Arabs and Turks a few hundred years ago.

Today white east European woman are still trafficked and enslaved, especially Romanian women. One million Romanian women and have been trafficked into prostitution, which some say constitutes a genocide.

But white people are sooooo privileged 🙄

I have visited Dubai before and wouldn't go back. There is little culture to speak of. We visited the city museum in the old city which cost something like £3 to visit - nothing in Dubai costs so little. It was about the history of the UAE up to the modern day, basically UAE pre oil. There are a few mosques to visit - ofc, you need to cover yourself head to toe essentially if you are female. They are determined to have the best of everything but there is no feeling behind any of it. The project I heard about when visiting was they are creating another huge mall which is going to have a recreated Oxford Street - like, why?

the lack of culture is so odd and whilst as you say there are mosques there are very few cultural places to visit. My friend had a job over there and said very much the same. I can see why influencers like it but would not appeal in any way to me. Also why do they want to recreate things like Oxford Street? If people want to visit Oxford Street go visit London.
