If this is the same people publishing her paper (which it sounds like), it seems that they're mostly sub par. If you go on their Wikipedia page (for Frontiers Media) there's a huge list of controversies too, including recently publishing papers that link vaccines to autism and partaking in HIV denialism.

Yeah, it's another Minerva delusion that their university is somehow affordable - might seem 'affordable' on the face of it compared to US universities but the gap closes once you factor in the much better scholarship and financial aid opportunities available at US institutions and the hidden costs at Minerva e.g. visas, flights, healthcare.

It's kind of disturbing how everything their CEO has said at some point has also been parroted by Minerva students. He has managed to condense all the stupid thoughts that have ever entered his brain into a curriculum, and these 18-23 year olds are lapping it up and going around the world repeating it. I can't imagine his ego.
yeah, the whole linguistic thing I find really fascinating, word for word you can find whole phrases he has said parrotted by students in artciles etc, and the whole random lexis they use to describe standard uni things, like pre-reading which EVERY uni has, is really cult like and bizarre

Among the various ignorant and unintelligent things the Minerva CEO has said, in one interview he brags about how they don't subsidise professor research which allows them to keep tuition costs lower for students. But considering Minerva doesn't even have any active research groups, I don't see how that is even a worthy point to make. Pretty easy to not subsidise research if your institution doesn't actually produce any research (outside of your students randomly deciding to publish their own research project).
From what I understand the majority of their professors work for actual unis and probably have research projects or work within those, Minerva is just an extra income to them at most

It has a pretty abysmal impact factor too (at least their Frontiers in Education does), so isn't one to aim for.

Yeah, from what I gathered doing a quick 2 minute google search, their review process is super fast. Like, 90 days for submitting, 2 review stages, and acceptance. I'm not very familiar with publishing in STEM or business or the like, but publishing in humanities usually takes months. So even just that sounds kinda shady.

Definitely, and to me this makes it even more funny how they claim to have invented the ultimate university model, revolutionized higher education etc. When one makes such claims, the logical conclusion would be that all universities should be run like this, but the way they run Minerva is clearly laughably unsustainable.

Is Mineva actually an independent university? They’re a ‘school’ at KGI, which itself sits under something else. I can’t quite get my head around their structure and how that works with whatever the US equivalent of things like the REF are.

As far as I understand, no they are not. I think they're like you said a school under KGI, since KGI is supposedly the institution which in the end awards them degrees.

It's probably an independent institution but doesn't have degree awarding powers. You get the same situation with a lot of (legit) colleges in the UK that award degrees via a bigger institution.

An editor from one of the big sociology journals did a talk at my uni last year (pre-covid of course) and said she's known the process to take up to 18 months. (But like I said, she edits one of the biggest journals in the field so times may be faster for more specialist journals)

I’m literally only writing this because in her boredom Jade may read here but I had my undergrad thesis in history published that included me - on a scholarship - travelling to France and doing archival research. I also have a piece that’s currently under peer review that’s based off one of the essays I wrote during my masters and will hopefully start polishing another piece soon. Minerva is not unique. Minerva is not special and I dare say that I’ve had more opportunities to publish than you ever will because I went to a well-recognised institution, have been taught research techniques and have constantly had my writing challenged and pushed academically. Also I could go to a freaking physical library that has BOOKS.

the fact that they're paying so much and don't even have a library or a study space or anything
Even during covid, my uni is providing access to a physical library and study spaces

What do their tuition fees cover? The online platform and I assume travel, but what else? Maybe some journal data bases

I totally wouldn't be surprised if Jade started spouting some anti-vax bullshit ... cAsUaL mAGic and gRoWtH miNdSeT are all you need to become immune to covid guys xxx

literally this, minerva is not unique. like i'm an undergrad and my uni is very focused on independent research and work (they used to brand themselves as a grad school for undergrads...anyway) and it's not too far off to either get independent research you've done en lieu of your academics or your thesis to get published by the time you graduate/after. i have a friend who does research in climate change science and policy and has like 4 papers under review right now...as an undergrad and most of my peers (myself included) are hoping to publish our theses in academic journals. so like, jade can't spout LOOK AT MINERVA SO UNIQUE AS AN UNDERGRAD I PUBLISHED. it is unique for undergrads to be able to publish, but it's not just at minerva.

So I went down the rabbit hole of looking into this Niklas guy. What do we know? From what I can find he’s 20, really into sustainability and looks like he used to date this Minerva girl called Anna who Jade follows on Instagram (and actually doesn’t look unlike Jade)? Either they were just v close friends or he has a definite type! There’s a video of them holding hands too on her insta stories.

I will say though he’s good looking! Sorry if I’m epically late catching up with this!

Okay that's... almost creepy. He so has a type haha. Definitely looks like a fuckboy though. and Jade looks like she falls hard and fast and interprets everything as "super serious". Idk if she could handle a no strings attached/FWB relationship

If memory serves (someone please correct me if I’m wrong) but I think in a previous thread it was established that Minerva don’t pay for travel/visas.

Yes i think you are right. And it seems that the students have to do all their paper work/visas without any help/counceling, for a uni that brands itself in travelling they could have more resources.

I could 100% see this. But some airlines aren’t going to let people in without it so I’m sure she will take the vaccine. Nothing can get in the way of her ✨✨❤ Travel 🌍🥰🥰
