My home town is just a few miles down the road from the castle Mary queen of scots was executed in
It has a Elizabeathen coaching Inn (that she stayed in on route to the castle) which legend says contains a staircase that came from the castle years later, urban myth says you can still see the indentation of a ring mark the length of the bannister supposedly left by Mary as she held on as she was dragged down the stairs to her impending death
many many years ago my grandmother and her friend used to work in the Inn, one day they were both in the reception when they heard foot steps running down the stairs Followed by the sound of an old taffeta dress rustling, they both went all around looking but couldnt find anything, this happened on a regular basis each time nobody could be found, eventually they told a colleague about it, apparently she had been seen and heard in the Inn on numerous occasions, sometimes she could be seen running from the Inn and over a gate in the grounds (it was said Mary had tried to escape from the Inn, but she was caught as she was trying to climb the gate, apparently as she was caught she was crying " I perish I perish")
As time went on and the footsteps and dress were heard my nan would just say there's Mary off again, there was also a room that you could hear her crying in at night too
When I was about eighteen I applied for a job there myself funnily enough the interview was the first time I had actually been inside the building, after the interview I was shown round and when we got to a room called the Westgate suit my blood ran cold I had the strangest feeling in there it was much darker than the rest of the Inn and it had the most oppressive feeling I have experienced the atmosphere just felt so heavy and sad, I couldn't wait to get out
As soon as I got home I told my nan what I had felt, she said she wasn't at all surprised it was supposedly the most haunted part of the building and lots of people had strange experiences
A few days later I was offered the job, which I declined, there was no way I could work somewhere like that especially at night
