I don’t think anybody who receives money from the state looks good in a tiara when there are people working full time but going to food banks to feed their children.

I've been so enjoying looking up all the tiaras! The Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara and Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara are my favourites I think.

I blame Harry for the Sussex mess more than Meghan. He knew exactly what was needed and how she would be expected to behave. If he didn't think she was suitable for Royal life but wanted to marry her he should have withdrew and married her in a non royal wedding.
I doubt she would have agreed to that. After all what do think first attracted to her to A balding multi millionaire Prince who's granny is Queen of the United Kingdom???

I couldn’t agree more with this. I also find it tasteless that homeless people get kicked off the streets when there’s a Royal Wedding. The whole concept of a RF is toxic for people who live in the UK and also the people in the RF themselves. They aren’t allowed to be real people. Meanwhile (some) people in the UK use the fact we have a RF to validate their feelings of self worth. This is not something that will ever work.

Love all the tiara chat!
Some of my favourite royal jewels content over the year has come from this blog: https://orderofsplendor.blogspot.com/p/jewel-central.html and their sister blog just on Queen Elizabeth's jewels here: http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.com/

So great for deep dives into different royal families and their vaults.

I have a real soft spot for the cameo tiara Princess Victoria of Sweden wore at her wedding, and I love how often the Swedes bring out the tiaras.

Well it certainly is not toxic to me and I live In the UK. Royal weddings also generate billions in tourism revenue for our economy, helping create jobs and increase wages and earnings and putting more tax revenue into public services too

Thank you! It looks like a great read. I had just started scrolling this post and was taken aback realising how much Kate's eyeliner approach has changed over the years! For the better I think? 😅

Royals generating money in tourism is a myth.

Yes. Although I preferred her eyebrows a few years ago. They're a bit too thick now, but had a better shape before!

Is it? If people come to London they always want a picture outside Buckingham Palace and every time I’ve been to Windsor it’s been very busy around the castle.
I’m sure for the jubilee celebrations there will be crowds of people for any procession or concerts they do (if they can do any)

Yes, I really don't remember the wedding eyeliner being quite this heavy and unsubtle. It was probably the trend at the time.

I'm a little undecided on the RF as they act as head of state - it would be hugely complex to reform.

If we're talking about slimming them down, how? How would that work in practice aside from funding less of them?

But the Palaces and Castles are still there as tourist attractions whatever - Edinburgh Castle is heaving but the chances of stumbling across a Royal there are nil.

(Not that I think another bash at a Commonwealth is the way forward … and even when we tried it the first time primogeniture seemed to be wanted, so it was pretty much of a muchness. One head of state is pretty much the same as another expense-wise. The buildings and contents are historic and need to be preserved anyway, just that if people want to come and lay claim to being the next Royal Bride have a picture outside Buch House, they will whoever lives in it).

They are tourist attractions because of the royal family though. I don’t think old castles and palaces they no longer live in get the same level of tourists.

Yes it’s a myth. In 2018 when Meghan and Harry married, tourist numbers fell by 3% compared to the previous year and the money spent by overseas tourists fell by 7%. The country lost £1.7 billion in tourist revenues during the 2018 year.
As for Buckingham Palace and Windsor of course it would be busy, it’s because it’s a historical building. Same was Versailles. The top tourist attractions from Visit Britain from 2019 (pre pandemic) didn’t include any royal residences that the royals still use. I can’t see any in the top 20.

They are tourist attractions because of the royal family though. I don’t think old castles and palaces they no longer live in get the same level of tourists.
Interestingly Hampton Court Palace was the only visitor attraction in 2019 that was in the top 20 most visited places in the U.K. Buckingham Palace, Windsor, etc didn’t make it. No royal has lived in Hampton Court for ages.
