To be entirely fair I don’t doubt her account of HG, it certainly rang true to me and I was hospitalised with it. If it was significantly embroidered she has absolutely remarkable levels of skill and insight!
I was annoyed by her remark in a post recently about chastising her eldest for having a whinge about something being “for girls”. This pervasive idea that that kind of chat from small children is all a product of sexist socialisation is just such naive bunk, the “girl cooties, boy cooties” stage of social differential is there in some form in every culture on Earth, it’s a developmental stage. This blank slatist idea that it can be eDUcATeD out of existence is just daft, and setting a lot of mothers up for worry and frustration. (There certainly are words and phrases and ideas that are clear signposts of having picked up something from peers or adults, but sex differentiation and silly little developmental quirks and stages on the basis of it is about as deeply ingrained as it gets - it doesn’t stop existing because it happens not to be politically expedient). Rants about Maya Angelou are only going to confuse or frustrate, and a normal, well-brought-up kid of sound temperament will almost always grow out of that kind of daftness if left to their own devices. Vacuous Insta-friendly libfem rants do not a golden feminist son make.
