Does anyone else think there is actually a deep seated self hatred and self destruction in Shane? I know we all are a bit silly in our 20s (well I was!), but it is crazy how he has such a serious disability but doesn't do his exercises, wear splints, or eat a balanced diet. He also drinks a lot of beer in proportion to his size.
I’m sure mental health is at least a part of what you see but I don’t really blame him. If I were born with his disease I’d probably be pissed and ask, why me? What’s the point in stretching routinely or eating healthy if the condition will never improve? And I’m sure he overcompensates to appear cool and “normal” as if anyone is really normal. Also you have to factor in how he basically had to become famous for women to even want to act as his girlfriend since he never had one in high school or college...that must feel terrible. The world is cruel and I sort of don’t blame him if this is the case with him. I think this relationship is fake but in the grand scheme of things we can’t really judge someone else for how they choose to deal with their problems. So, why not lie to people and sell books and travel the country with a pretty girl, ya know? It just crosses the line at asking people for money on the basis of a fake relationship when most of their subscribers of a similar age probably don’t even own a house and can afford to travel nearly as much as them. And since they’re ok with receiving money by deception and from him being pitied then it contradicts their whole message of equal treatment

He doesn't take care of his already poor health because it's the last act of infantile rebellion he's got against his condition which is only deteriorating. I'd say it's understandable if he had paid help caring for him, not a young woman he claims to love, who is breaking her back and giving up whatever is left of her sanity for him. He is a a textbook narcissist. Fragile ego and low self esteem hiding behind the mask of self importance, demanding attention and admiration. Zero empathy for others. He seriously thinks not going to beer tastings is his sacrifice in this relationship... how about not being a spoiled brat sabotaging his fragile health? When he goes out for tests and nurses can't draw blood because he refuses to drink water the day before, if he breaks a bone because he didn't wear splints, if his internal organs give out from alcohol damage - it's Hannah who has to deal with it. Why makes things even harder and more stressful for her? And this asshole plans on having kids too...
Totally agree with everything you have said I bet Shane has had no one say no to him his whole life and his whole he's had people literally break their back for him he doesn't have to worry about wiping his ass his poor fiancée has to and when he has certain foods or beer I feel sorry for hannnah because it's her who's gonna have to deal with the aftermath tmi but bad guts happening you know what I mean anyway he's thst self absorbed he thinks he's helping hannah with looking after dogs he can't do sweet f.a he can't cook he just sits there criticising everything seriously hannah has the patient of a saint to deal with him he's annoying af and that's being polite he reminds me of a little kid stubborn and wants to do what he wants well poor little Shane can't moan when his health suddenly declines more if he isn't doing anything to benefit it
