Societal Collapse - thoughts?

The internet is vulnerable in a few ways. From an infrastructure POV the internet is mainly undersea cables and there actually aren’t that many of them. Or, we are reliant on surprisingly few of them. Only about 400 in total and a handful of main ones I think. They were owned and operated by telecommunications companies, now google and Facebook etc have muscled in, and where they come into land is closely guarded. If these were cut sections of the worlds internet would be gone, especially more isolated regions of the world. And the rise of private ownership of the cables is a vulnerability in itself too.

But we still have cash. My first job they just handed you a envelope of cash at the end of the week. You would still be paid. But yes lots of people would lose their job, but without as much technology we would need more man power again, so jobs would be created.

Who actually cares if Amazon and Google fall, they're too big and powerful and their owners are hoarding wealth. Good riddance to them.

We have enough food in shops and warehouses around the country to feed the population for longer than 2 weeks. Maybe you won't get your good preference, but they would be food.
That’s true we definitely have enough food to go around especially tinned foods but people are so greedy, remember the stock piling last year when so many people were piling their trolleys full, just shows when it comes down to it most people will only think about themselves and unfortunately a lot of people don’t have the privilege to go into a store and buy a full trolley of food

While yes they’re not essential to life you cannot deny that the IT industry in general is a huge employer. Some statistics have it at it employing some 4 billion people. Some IT jobs would probably remain but a lot would also be lost, plus it’s not accounting for those who are self-employed online somehow. You also have to account for the population increase since 1980s/90s

It’s not really the fact that we could live without the internet. It’s more so that it’s incorporated into the society and our lives so much where taking it out would take a lot of readjustment and potential issues other than unemployment rates increasing

I don’t think that the internet dying would cause a collapse of society, but paired with other factors it could
I don't think it's as incorporated as much as people think. I mean, yes a lot of IT systems in businesses run on the internet, but they should have back up plans for when the internet 'crashes'. The NHS for example, would still run. Sure things would be crazy at first but I have worked in the NHS when the internet crashed for a few days, outpatient clinics were a bit iffy, but nothing was cancelled.

It's another reason why I don't think there will be a robotic workforce - what happens when they crash? 😂

Regarding population increase, why yes that is correct, if we were to suddenly have no internet forever, jobs will still be created. Loads of banks have closed due to online banking, but if that was gone they would surely need to create more banks and employ more people to staff them/create bigger call centres. If they're self employed and online only, yes this will have a terrible effect on them, but you would then surely either try to adapt to owning a store (if possible in that line of work) or find another job?

My point was basically yes the internet going would be awful for a lot of people, but we would adapt.

The NHS wouldn’t run, if you look on the world economic forum they explain what would happen if there was a cyber attack and hospitals being unable to to function is mentioned among many other things

It would. NHS trusts have back ups/contingencies in place. I said I worked during the NHS when attacks happened. We still use paper notes. Surgeries and patient care doesn't full under the internet. Machines don't use the internet. It would be fine.

Even if the NHS does run to some capacity, they have to be prepared for it to some extent. There's going to be the less essential industries which aren't and while they may not be essential to society a lot of people would be angry. Anger and a possible lack of access to money which is essential (even for a week or two)... well, can't really end well

I also think there would be a huge increase in people doubting the government. Without the internet, and since some newspapers have gone completely online but also a potential lack of money access, you're left with very few sources for news or even news topics - suddenly, you're not going to hear about something the news doesn't deem worth talking about.

So not only do you then have unrest for a week or two, you also have a potential lasting effect once the internet does return

Possibly be ok without internet but they probably rely on it a lot now. I think we are talking about different things as I was previously talking about the cyber attack which is explained on the world economic forum, it would include a shutdown of power grids as well as internet so therefore we would set back by 100 years and nothing would be able to work = economic chaos and society collapse.

Yes but who would do that? Dr Evil and his cat seeking world domination?

A collapse of power grids and Internet is much more likely to be caused by a natural phenomena such as solar flares, like the Carrington Event 150 years ago.

We are already well overdue another one, but things like that cannot be attributed to shady government organisations/hackers, so the threat does not register. A strong one could set society back years, even decades, but they are not trendy or mysterious enough for people to worry about, even though as forces of nature, they are very, very cool things to study.

We'll be lucky to get 48 hours notice 'when' it happens again.

This was my exact point about conspiracy theorists constantly thinking that there’s another human causing things and controlling things, when the reality is we are exceptionally vulnerable to any natural forces/catastrophes, especially being on a large ball in the middle of a vast matter that we know nothing about hurtling around a burning up star. But it’s ok because some blokes control everything and they will be controlling it all 🤣

Nobody is right now, what you are describing is fascism, Hitler attempted it? Mussolini attempted it? And yes it will be attempted again.

The people that are in charge / the elites / large corporations. The same people that benefited from fascism when it was tried before.
I suppose I don't understand how - for example if there's no internet or power, then what's a corporation getting out of it? They can't buy or sell or manufacture anything in that situation.

How? If there is no electricity, no internet etc and limited food supply? The business that they also rely on to keep their money going.

The internet and power would only be out temporarily?

Why would anyone want world domination though? It’s a massive ball ache. Far easier ways to be a megalomaniac than hiding the internet for a week. So they would be holding the internet hostage until they get what they want. ?
That’s just a massive nerds challenge to defeat the Internet thief. It wouldn’t be a government who overthrew that it would be some hackers in their bedrooms.
Solar flares are more of a threat, I follow space weather as I’m a total geek.

To be honest this is 99% of the reason why I can't get behind any CT that involves someone wanting to take over the world 😂 what would be the point?
