Throughout human history societies have risen and fallen. Harrappa. Mesopatamia. The Maya. The list is endless. And the three things that contribute to this are always uncontrolled migration, human greed, and climate change. Society will collapse when a critical point of human population exceeding the capacity to provide basic needs is reached. How close is that? I've no idea. But in my opinion the consumer driven economic model we follow at the moment can't be sustained for much longer. It isn't, and never has been, necessary to change your phone every year, or your wardrobe every season.

Does the thought of this scare you all? I find the topic interesting because I find it all the total collapse of society all to easy to picture but I try not to think about it too much because it genuinely terrifies me.
Yes it does. I am grateful to be childfree. One if my original reasons was not wanting to bring a child into this world, imagining that the world would turn upside down in their lifetime, not mine.

Something big - bigger than all the protests currently happening around the world - is about to go down.

Suggest: stock up on milk powder, flour (if you can) and water (fill as many empty bottles as you can with tap water)
Also pet food if you have pets
Get cash out - as much as you can - and hide it in your home
If you have loved ones living alone, encourage them to come and stay with you

Be prepared as best you can, but don't bog yourself down with worry.

I was right about the internet shut down a few months back - before the first lot happened - I hope I'm right now too, but please prepare yourselves.
Come on elaborate, or get on over to the conspiracy thread.

Great idea for a thread OP.
I think it may not be political but climate change which spurs on any societal chaos.
Just this week we've seen biblical rainfall in Europe & a region in China, the other day got 1 year's rainfall in a day, A YEAR'S worth of rain.
As other posters here have said too, our consumerist numpties will empty/pollute the planet until it can take no more.
You only have to remember them emptying the supermarkets of loo roll during lockdown.
Technology too may play a part, just imagine if the Internet crashes? Hackers are incredibly powerful, any future World Wars will be played out online, in fact they are right now, through propaganda, interfering/influencing & on and on.

I've heard people say that all civilizations follow the same path before they fall, they all end up very hedonistic with less morality and family values.

That does seem to tie in to our overly greedy, sexualised society that worships consumerism.

I would also say our distribution of wealth is probably a marker that things can't go on the way they are, with a tiny minority having all the money.

Do you think this will happen this year ? Or soon ?
I need to read more into this. I don’t know where to start. I hope it’s not true.
All of this was predicted last winter too, I know this because my own parent decided to scare me to death to the point I ended up on anxiety medication. Telling me to stock up on food supplies and water etc and get a generator. Also she started keeping a baseball bat and various other weapons by her door. I spent a small fortune stocking up on food, I had so many bottles of water and I spent days waiting for something on edge. It massively effected mine and my child’s life.
Im no longer in contact with her, it took some really good friends and family to point out that she’s a heavy cannabis smoker and has massive paranoia and has now been diagnosed with mental illness. But I assure you it was exactly the same last year and there’s no point in even discussing these things with people who believe them because they seem to enjoy the catastrophic predictions and they don’t actually give one damn about what it does to anyone else’s mental health, it’s never a rational conversation and you’ll just be told you’re not “awake”.
On that note I’m out of this thread which is a shame as the original post was a good rational conversation, but some of this is now way too triggering for me. For those with any hint of anxiety, take care and take it all with a tiny pinch of salt.

I hate this scare mongering that we seem to have a influx of at the moment. I don’t get the way people seem to almost gloat about this “information” they have, which isn’t informative but utterly terrifying for so many. Especially when people’s mental health is generally more vulnerable than ever. In the same sentence though I genuinely believe that these people are actually far more weak than the ones being terrified by the information, they can’t accept that humanity is exceptionally fragile, we have become arrogant as a species to believe that everything is so controlled and nothing can possibly happen to us good or bad unless it’s been created by some other being. My late dad used to rationalise it to me, give me a perspective on how we’re basically minuscule bits of life hurtling through space around a impossible to begin to imagine, burning up star.
Civilisation will come to an end, of course it will, everything has an end, no one gets out of here alive. I won’t be scrapping or prepping because if we get to that point in my lifetime I’ll take my own way out, with my family, and I accept that. In the meantime my life is much more likely to come to an end in the car I drive every day, or that I keep feeding my body with fattening stuff and have no idea if my artery will become blocked. Living is a risk, life is fragile, enjoy everyday because there’s very little you can do or control about how long you’re here for and to keep attempting to leads to misery, I’ve learnt this from my own experience.

just a note to the original poster none of this was aimed at you, I read it myself and found it interesting, it’s just the derailment.

Where do people find this stuff? Is it all just a feeling or is there some sort of data that can back it up (not a Reddit thread)?

If I’m perfectly honest, I would take a pre internet society. While it’s great in some ways, I do believe that the bad outweighs the good and it’s getting worse. I was 6 when we got our first (very basic) computer and I feel like my whole life is consumed by technology and the internet.

Ok well I, like 90% of people will take my chances cruising through life in ignorance.
I’m still waiting for that nuclear explosion I was promised in the 80s.

I was 32 when the millennium ticked over, most of the world were losing their minds over the so-called Y2K bug. It was a big deal over nothing. I know we rely a lot more on the internet now but even back then I got my pay put straight into my bank. I hoarded food and water plus took most of my available cash out of the bank, all for nothing. Just scare-mongering.

I’m really not invested in the “go bag” preppier underground bunker lifestyle. I keep well stocked on everything as I’m disabled and there can be difficulties getting deliveries.
Honestly if the whole of society collapsed I could survive a week or so in the hope it was a temporary blip and if not, myself and most people would just be screwed 🤷🏼‍♀️ So what if you hid all your cash under your bed? It would be worthless. You could get ripped off. If it happens, it happens and we will deal with it.

Out of interest, when we who believe that man-made climate change is a real thing are told that we should "do our research" / "question authority", what research have the posters themselves done other than read books of other people's research, which helpfully absolve them of blame and the need to change their lifestyle one iota ?

The temperature data since the Industrial Revolution is stark. Even if it weren't, how on Earth is trying to pollute less something that doesn't need to be undertaken ? I'm tired of Facebook idiots thinking that because they've managed to find a few cranks who agree with them that they somehow are into some secret of climate function that the assembled PhDs of the IPCC et al have blithely passed by. I know Einstein was working in a patent office / Post Office when he discovered relativity, but I doubt that Debbie / Dave from accounts / the pub has cracked climate science.

Edit : sorry, forgot, not only reading other people's research, but actively promoting the Unabomber's manifesto. What's next ? A "like" for Mein Kampf as "he's really onto something and you've got to explore all opinions".

I was talking with a (much younger) colleague the other day, she was astonished to realise that "climate change" isn't something that has just recently been discovered. I was reading books written over 30 years ago that talked about it, although different terms were used (greenhouse effect etc). CFC's were first banned in 1976, as scientists realised the damage that they were causing to the atmosphere. This is not new science, and the idea that a closed ecosystem, can continue to sustain increasing numbers of humans, along with their toxic waste, is laughable. This is not an opinion, it's not some hippy-dippy fairy tale, it is proven fact, the only disputes are over the numbers. Humans will die out eventually, we've been here for the blink of an eye in evolutionary terms, the Earth will go on without us, as will (hopefully) some of the flora and fauna.

The "societal collapse"?? I think that some societies are already seeing this in action. Venezuela anyone?

Dare I say that the rise in very nationalist right wing political beliefs will be a huge contributing factor imo, and if not that it will be countries simply being selfish

We're already seeing it now to some extent. Countries don't appear very keen to be sharing the vaccine without some sort of dumb argument accompanying it, and third world/developing countries appear to be largely ignored. COVID may not be the most deadly thing out there, but if the predictions are right and we're expecting to see more viruses like this then it's very worrying

Migration also, to some extent even the Brexit discourse about immigrants (UKIP especially). With global warming, it's expected that a lot more people will start migrating to countries that have 'better' climates and even those living in large cities will want to relocate due to the heat (especially if they live in flats). When you set up the discourse that nearly all migration is bad, I just don't see it going very well
I have to disagree with that I’m afraid. Mass migrations has been one of the main causes of societal collapse throughout history. The Bronze Age collapse in which huge powerful empires disappeared within a matter of decades is often attributed to the “Sea Peoples” who were understood to be a loose confederation of refugees fleeing collapsing societies in their own lands. The beginning of the end of the Eastern Roman Empire was when the Goths were allowed to settle within Roman lands without the requirement of assimilation. The Goths themselves were fleeing the Huns. By then the Western Empire had already been overrun by Germanic barbarians to such an extent the the army was almost entirely made up of barbarians, and they often switched sides at a whim.

China has one of the longest histories of independent civilisation, yet even they were once overrun by Mongolian horsemen living in tents. The Aztecs and the Incas were defeated by a handful of Spaniards, and eventually replaced completely by increasing waves of them.

It would be nice to believe that incomers would be welcomed with fraternity and generosity by existing populations, and the incomers themselves would respond with equal benevolence. Nice dreams. But history has shown, time and time again this is rarely the case.

I appreciate some see it as scaremongering, but I disagree, people are just sharing information they are coming across to try and help others, I’m not one for stock piling but is it the worst idea to have some emergency supplies incase something did happen? I think we are heading into dark times, the wef are really pushing a ‘great reset’ and we can’t be too naive and comfortable thinking a massive upheaval will never happen to us, I think the 2020s will be testing times, unfortunately.
It absolutely is the worst idea to even suggest that, not for me personally but for people who already have so many day to day worries which include wondering if they’ll be able to feed themselves tonight let alone having some stock incase the worst happens. Some people are already living in testing times and have been for so long and all this scaremongering is doing is adding to those who have real problems every day.

I just want to add also, that no one has thanked the poster for the “information”. One person replied “posts like these absolutely terrify me”.
It’s not always information they are finding either, articles from years ago being misinterpreted, and if anyone dares to say that they are instantly told no that’s because you’ve seen it on MSM which blacks out so much etc etc. It’s absolutely ridiculous what is going on with people, and this is the downfall in society. People no longer have community groups, less people have faiths etc so instead cling together over believing in something horrendous.

Everyone needs to do their part to make society function and when we have more takers than givers, that’s when things start to crumble. It has nothing to do with morality: A century ago women were considered property. Owning another human being has always been immoral from time immemorial. So it has nothing to do with sticking to or abandoning traditional “family” values. Societies function at their best when people realize that they are not a drop in the ocean but an essential cog in a greater machine.

When it comes to predicting the future, The Simpsons has sadly been our most reliable forecaster 😣
