I just can't see why society will collapse if the internet does.
We lose all money in the bank, but debt also, so that will be a great equaliser. We still have phone lines. Life worked fine before the internet, I remember it.
There would be a few weeks of struggle as we get things back to phone lines faxs and mail, but after that surely bit would be fine. Maybe better.

Eh, I don't think it's really as simple as that. Here's a whole article on how it affects a whole bunch of things. I never considered that companies like Google and Amazon would lose a lot, if not all, of their business and leave people out of a job and they employ around 1.3 million people worldwide. That alone would no longer just be a few weeks of struggle. I also can't imagine many people wanting to work if they can't get paid and that has a whole host of effects on everything
We would also be put onto digital currencies which are controlled by the government, just imagine how much control they would have, for example, sorry you’ve used your alcohol allowance for the week so you can’t buy that bottle of wine, sorry you’ve used your sugar allowance for the week you cannot buy that cake. How is wiping your debts worth signing over complete control to the government. Think I’d rather live in a free country thanks

Whilst I agree we would be able to cope, all be it it’s a massive change. I don’t want to lose my savings to equalise some else’s debt. Works well for those in debt.
I have savings and my own house and I find it quite irritating that someone says an economic collapse would be great because debt would be wiped

A lot of businesses are run using Amazon’s cloud servers. If AWS goes down there are problems across the board.

While yes they’re not essential to life you cannot deny that the IT industry in general is a huge employer. Some statistics have it at it employing some 4 billion people. Some IT jobs would probably remain but a lot would also be lost, plus it’s not accounting for those who are self-employed online somehow. You also have to account for the population increase since 1980s/90s
It’s not really the fact that we could live without the internet. It’s more so that it’s incorporated into the society and our lives so much where taking it out would take a lot of readjustment and potential issues other than unemployment rates increasing

It’s not forever, it’s a cyber attack/shutdown, I’m not sure how long for but people are predicting Mabye a week or 2? Long enough to stop the supply chains and to crash the economy, it wouldn’t take long.
Interestingly, governments could shut down the internet on their own within that country. It seems to be called an internet blackout and has been used in countries such as Iran during mass protests
Not entirely sure the West would take the same approach but I could see something like a cyber attack causing a few riots/protests which coupled with economy issues would probably be a bit of a mess

This is just one person talking about it - many others are too.
As I said yesterday, be prepared (as we all should for any emergency). Don't panic, don't fret ... just live your life normally but make sure you do have what you need (at all times, not just now).
Yet here you are in a 'societal collapse' thread. If things like this scare you, don't read them. I don't mean to sound heartless or harsh, but what else do you think this thread is going to discuss?

of course this will fall under conspiracy theory but it’s definitely relevant to what could happenPredictions come from historic events in human history. There will be wars, economic crashes, and in the last couple of years we have had in our lifetime a global pandemic. These events destabilize and can have catastrophic consequences for societies. We know they have and indeed will come about at some stage. Add climate related problems and natural disasters to the mix, and there are plenty of things which could cause society to crumble.
I feel concerned about droughts and poor crop yields. I think Brexit makes us more vulnerable as far as food supply goes.

You literally said something bad 'was about to go down' as if it was gonna happen in the next month or so, which isn't what the article is about and that's what I was looking for opinions on.

Yeah I think the revisited MIT paper was more likely, slower changes to society (as we know it) rather than the overnight collapse because the internet’s turned off.
I think if someone hid the internet, you would be surprised how quickly crowd sourced hackers would get it back. Remember that bug the other year which affected several countries and the NHS? Random everyday hacker guy stopped it.
I just don’t subscribe to the “Dr Evil taking over the world” theory. There’s loads of factions in the world who don’t disagree, from governments down to individuals. They work against each other unless they need to work together.

But we still have cash. My first job they just handed you a envelope of cash at the end of the week. You would still be paid. But yes lots of people would lose their job, but without as much technology we would need more man power again, so jobs would be created.
Who actually cares if Amazon and Google fall, they're too big and powerful and their owners are hoarding wealth. Good riddance to them.
We have enough food in shops and warehouses around the country to feed the population for longer than 2 weeks. Maybe you won't get your good preference, but they would be food.
