So much SW dr
duck me, that is the most sensible summary I’ve seen in ages about the huns complaining about SW causing their food issues.

Best of luck though. I got some nasty replies when I pointed out similar a few months back. Some people don’t like hearing that their problems aren’t entirely someone else’s fault.
Telling people that some food is bad and will make you large, and being large is bad, is very much the cause of A LOT of food and body issues people have.

SW couldn’t give a tit about your health, they want you to feel tit about the way you look and the things you like to eat so you’ll keep paying the fiver.

SW does work but it doesn't long term.
Almost everyone who has had a big loss gains it back eventually.
Yes, you can look at some people and think 'oh but they lost 8 stone it must work'.
Have a think do you know anyone from SW in real life who has maintained comfortably long term?

If someone is still paying their fiver losing and gaining the same 8lbs over and over again to get back to target after a big weightloss that's not normal dietary behaviour.
Same as if someone is at target and maintained for a while but terrified of having anything other than a jacket potato with beans at a cafe..thats not good either.

Most people who are against SW don't doubt it has results with people losing weight but when it comes to maintainance and long term relationship with food that the problems are their.

Food is fuel yes, but its meant to be enjoyed also.
Butter, cakes, white bread, avocados, nuts, smoothies, olive oil and takeaways are not the enemy.
But SW teaches they are.
Yes they promote you can have takeaways but they encourage you to stay away from most of the menu and go for low syn options like beef and black bean with boiled rice etc.
I'v heard it said at group something to think about is getting a iceland SW meal in for when the rest of the family are having a takeaway.
Thats no way to live.

At the end of the day SW is a weight loss company, they don’t make money if you lose weight & stay at target. Profits come from repeat customers unfortunately.
BUT unless people have a learning difficulty you know that if you go back to horsing in the white bread & butter with the Pringles you’re going to put back on what you lost.
Hand on heart I lost 5 & half stone with SW, put on 2 stone during covid, it wasn’t from eating avocados or an extra 10gm in my porridge. It was red wine, peanuts & Monday pizza 🍕
Personal responsibility has to be taken as well! I’m now calorie counting & have lost most of that gain.
But I won’t knock SW, it got me where I needed when I started at 17stone +

Being a consultant has nothing to do with weightloss and more to do with sales and getting people through the door. I was a slimming consultant and you basically just need to be a smiley sales person. People buy from people they like, even better if they have lost weight. With regards to disordered eating, I’m not sure if slimming clubs cause this or because the person has issues that they thought losing weight would cure. Food issues and disorders are more about control, trauma, emotional issues and using food as a way to control these issues. Not everyone who follows a diet ends up with food issues, no matter what anti diet culture will have us believe.
For me, it wasn't the plan that 'caused' food issues.
I already had plenty of food issues but for me, it was the actual meetings and the way they are done.
Starving myself all day because I needed to make sure I didn't gain because then I'd basically be shamed infront of everyone in group after for gaining with things like, "Oh, you gained 1lb. What did you do wrong this week?"
"Let's go around the room and get you some advice for ways to help you lose next week"

Absolutely this. So it may well be class specific as maybe not all consultants are the same and thats why we dont all have the same experiences.

Im not saying I didnt overeat prior to SW because I did but the binge / restrict cycle due to the public nature of the classes and discussions was certainly introduced to me there. The jokes would be banded about regularly about wearing the same clothes to weigh in, dont drink after x time, dont eat after lunch.

Ultimately yes it was my choice to do this but I couldnt cope socially with the shame of gaining or maintaining or losing *just 1lb* as it was said in my class. When you were asked what you wanted to lose next week if you said 1lb it was always 'oh c'mon you can do better than that' youd have to give the ins and outs of your menstrual cycle to justify it. I know I hold weight more when I ovulate than on my period. 'Oh is it your star week?' No Brenda my ovary is popping out an egg.

Its never actually explained to you just how much you need to overeat to gain 1lb of large. The age old muscle weighs more than large is banded about a lot. Not that its just more dense and 1lb of feathers weighs the same as 1lb of metal.

Ive said it before on this thread CBT helped me so much more than any diet classes or coaches ever have.

Ive also said on this thread before that if you have lost weight with SW and its worked for you and continues to work thats amazing, being genuine here. Different strokes for different folks. If you go every week and dont need to pay a penny and its what keeps you on track Im never going to fault that.

That side of SW needs to go. Any losses, maintains etc should be private. As SW is a franchise I think some leaders go way over the top. Class talks should focus on food and movement (in my opinion). Weight loss/gains should only be shared if agreed upon at the scales x

I rejoined SW last week for what feels like the 50th time and it was crap! Was a class I hadn’t been to before, the consultant has 25+ years experience apparently but is still obese. I’d say 90% of the class were very overweight and most of them seemed like they’d been going for a long time. The woman next to me said she’d been losing and gaining the same half stone for the best part of a year!! During the class, all she did was ask everyone in the class if they had lost or gained that week then everyone clapped regardless of the result. It felt very outdated and I left feeling very uninspired and wondering what I paid £6+ for. My binge eating has reared it’s weird head in the past week since restarting so it’s fair to say it’s not for me.

The point to my post is I’m looking to try something different - How did you get CBT if you don’t mind me asking? Did you have to get referred from your GP?

I know exactly what you mean. I started SW in July 2021. I'm 2 stone down but that's in almost a year I struggled massively since Xmas to get back on track after a gain but I started calorie counting 3 weeks ago and haven't looked back. It's only now I see how restrictive it was for and I'd go to bed still hungry watching food videos online 😅
With CC, I'm eating what I want as long as I'm in the deficit and having things like bread and cereal in the same day. A no no with SW! I won't slam it as a previous poster said it started me off well and I haven't cancelled my online subscription just yet but CC has definitely opened my eyes!

I agree. There is a marked difference between leaders. My current leader/consultant/weightloss enthusiast is quite pragmatic. Talks about calorie deficit, encourages exercise, how to optimise the program (ie. Don't over-consume free foods) etc. Her replacement one evening was definitely of the category described here... Went from person to person asking had they lost/gained, how they felt, what they did right/wrong. I sat in a state of shock, petrified for when it would be my turn to speak.

So yes, that type of consultant class culture is not a healthy environment but I am also acutely aware that my lifestyle and overeating/drinking habits extend far beyond the realm of WW, SW and calorie counting.

Am genuinely interested for more info from the OP @Caffeinefiend re: CBT to change eating habits

It amazes me the lengths people will go to avoid the fact they eat more calories than they burn.

SW strategy is for consultants to watch who is doing well and living and breathing the plan. They butter them up, get them on the social team. Next step is the team developer casually drops into group throws them compliments and mentions a meeting for people interested in being a consultant. It’s all staged and this is why the Miss slinky, mr sleek, greatest loser etc awards were created to reel them in. Tansy and Aaron were the fish.

I self referred at my GP surgery. It was for different reasons nothing to do with food initially but it moved onto it.

I cant recommend it enough.
