Just catching up with the thread and saw this. Omg I remember picking up and reading this book as a teenager and it knocked me sick!
Lavender marriage? His fan base when they got together in the 1990s was probably quite staid, and times were different then. It might suit them both: showbiz lifestyle, a handy ‘Walker’ for events, companionship, shared friendship group.
