Scariest TV shows or films you’ve ever seen

I watched a film called darkness falls when I was a kid and I’m still scared of the dark now. From what I remember it’s basically if you go in the dark the tooth fairy scratched your face off

i watched this as a kid and it SCARED me so much. It was so creepy old town where if you opened your eyes or saw it and it was this hideous creature!
A friend when I was young made me watch stuff like Chucky and that when I was like 9 and I vowed to never watch horror again. I’m such a baby!

not a tv show, but when I was young a friend told me about the story that if you say bloody mary in the mirror 3 times at midnight when you turn around the virgin mary will scratch your face. It has given me a life long fear of looking in mirrors in the dark at any time

Session 9 sounds right up my street but it doesn't appear to be available to watch in the UK.

Where to start?

I saw a lot of terrible horrors as a kid, video nasties were the thing back then and a few of them scared me Evil Dead, Demons, Cataclysm, Amityville 2 etc and as I got older I really enjoyed a good horror.
There were two films, although not necessarily horror, that have stopped me from watching anything scary since. I really don't know why as others might find them laughable but since watching Stir of Echoes and Session 9 I've never been able to sit through a horror.

Session 9 is one of mine. The voice on the tapes freaks me out.

Love Stir of Echoes. And Session 9...is that the one about that group of handymen in an old asylum? If it is that one. That was really good too. Very creepy

That's the very one David Caruso and Peter Mullan are in it. It's just inexplicably scary to me.

I hate clowns. The first one scared me (even though I love Tim Curry). I refuse to watch the remakes.

Tim Curry is brilliant.
The abominable Dr Phibes with Vincent Price is an old movie but still scary in a gothic way.

Does anyone else remember when Derren Brown had the show where he held a seance with a group of students in a place where people had died in a suicide pact in the 70s? The viewers were to join in the seance at home. I watched it with my dad and we were using a makeshift ouija board. Ended with us all trying to contact this woman called Jane who in the end wasn’t even dead and there was an actress in a van outside dressed like Jane in 70s clothes. Had all been a big hoax but I had worked myself into an utter frenzy and my dad had just been moving the glass round the ouija board, I was convinced we had summoned Jane even when it was revealed as fake I struggled to sleep in case we had actually brought forth a ghost haha.

I've watched all the Exorcist films numerous times and one called 'Possessed' which was also based on the true story.

One to swerve is called Dominion: Prequel To The Exorcist. What a load of nonsense. Even Stellan Skarsgard couldn't save it.

Now, this prequel movie of the Exorcist had a lot of problems and there are several cuts of it floating around. The one I watched above was terrible.

Netflix have a version of it now called Exorcist:The Beginning. I watched it the other night and it is a lot better. Still not in the same league as the originals but at least I cut follow the plot.

One that is definitely not the scariest thing I've watched is 'Things Heard And Seen' with Amanda Seyfried and James Norton on Netflix. Could have had potential but was very weak with a rather strange ending. Not even sure I'd class it as a horror.

im exactly the same. Torture porn movies don’t interest me in the slightest. I love a good supernatural horror.

Double snap! I don't get scared by gore or special affects at all. Subtle horror works best for me. A guy in a mask with a saw is unsettling yes but not scary, whereas a shadowy blink and you miss it figure in a house is a thousand times scarier in my opinion.

Double snap! I don't get scared by gore or special affects at all. Subtle horror works best for me. A guy in a mask with a saw is unsettling yes but not scary, whereas a shadowy blink and you miss it figure in a house is a thousand times scarier in my opinion.

I've never seen anything likes 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' because I'm not interested in slasher movies.

I watched Exorcist : The Beginning at the cinema 17 years ago and I can still remember just how petrified I was afterwards! I’d gone to the cinema with a boyfriend at the time and when he dropped me off at home I had to call my dad to come right up to the car door and escort me into the house as I was absolutely terrified. I don’t remember what it was that made me so scared, I don’t remember anything about the film, but I definitely remember the sheer level of fear I had.

I watched 'The Banishing' last night on Amazon. Another film that had potential but got a bit messy in parts. Not bad though and quite a good cast. Watchable enough with some creepy scenes.

Another series I thought was very well done was Penny Dreadful with Timothy Dalton, Eva Green and Josh Hartnett. If Victorian Gothic is your thing it's definitely worth a watch. A great turn by the marvellous Helen McCrory too.

Skeleton Key scared me so much because of all the spooky, spiritual stuff.

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle is terrifying, teaches you that you have to be careful who you allow into your home. And be careful of who you allow to look after your kids! Which is a very real life lesson.


The Blair Witch Project, at the time everyone thought it was real and a documentary, not a film. Watched as a child and scared me so badly!

The Roommate was creepy as hell (Leighton Meester). And there’s a new Korean movie on Netflix called The Call which is apparently VERY scary and also gory. I haven’t watched it but my sister told me the story over the phone and I slept with my lights on for a good week.
