This is how they get us now! This is precisely it and you @Jelly Bean have nailed it! Turning the conversation in such an insidious way, using this vocabulary, as well as the ideal of a empowered woman (if I ever write "empowered", I'll vomit blood). And all this time I was snickering at L'Oreal's "You're worth it" mantra. I'm getting sweary, so I'm going to stop.

Also, while I don't find her a pleasant character, I feel a bit sorry for SH. All the backstabbing and arselicking to get to where she is, in a notoriously fickle and precarious industry, and trying desperately to stay relevant. Competing with bright young things who are eyeing her job.

**picturing SH as Bette Davis in All About Eve, surrounded by Eve Harrington types rocking a red lip (just one!) and drenched in Phylosikos**

Even SH manages to recommend a good product, it's just statistics given how many she mentions.

I see her more as Norma Desmond. But I might be a little prickly this evening. :D

Very brave of you to post this. And congratulations on being nearly debt free. How are you going to celebrate? Shopping tr
Getting on with my bloody life! I have been making a pretty decent salary for 3 years and haven't been able to enjoy semi-financial security and not feeling like I want to die when I think about money, so just getting myself to a place where someone asks me if I want to do something and I don't say "sorry I can't I'm broke" and refreshing my bank balance is going to be good enough for me!

I love my Parlux hairdryer, my buying had nothing whatsoever to do with SH though, I bought it because the salon I go to uses them and recommended it. I bought it in Sally Beauty Supplies when they had an offer on. I'd take a recommendation from a professional hairdresser over a self-hyped "guru" any day.

Genuine question as I don’t really know too much about IK. What are her credentials for writing a beauty column?

So many of of us here now. It is absolutely brilliant. Buying something SH recommended. Thought it was 'meh' at best or just tit but still thinking 'this must be my fault. I'm just not getting it but everyone else is'. So buy the next recommendation to see if things change.
All fed the mantra makeup is important and empowering. In Pretty Honest I was perusing earlier SH keeps using the term 'nerdy' re her interest in beauty. 'Now I might be a beauty nerd but...'. Now I think this is quite calculated. It implies something almost scientific and specialist. Quite niche. Justifying endless buying of 'stuff' because I'm a nerd. Makeup isn't trivial but very important and almost a science. Normalising 30 expensive lipsticks because 'I'm a beauty nerd. You wouldn't understand. And if you don't you just aren't as cool as me. But buy stuff and you might be!'.

I like makeup and wear it but ffs it isn't important. It just isn't.
So much of her cache was founded on that idea of a beauty nerd that I think was less common in 2011ish, the kind of person who knew the stuff that the beauty industry didn't want us to know, like what are the true active ingredients, which of the superdrug brands are last season's debenhams which are the previous season's Chanel etc. The beauty and skincare industry has changed so much since then because women got informed, but because the cat is out of the bag, everyone knows about acids and oils and retinols and vitamins and you can buy for under a tenner, the whole industry is just turning around and saying akshully, you want this fancy £100 magic infantalising lying tit that is still the same thing you can get for a tenner, but it comes in a fancy bottle and you can instagram it for headpats and all those women we liked for sharing that initial knowledge are laughing all the way to those swipeup payola kickbacks.

Ha! I’m a trailblazer. I bought a parlux about 18 years ago. I was not under the influence of an influencer.

It gave up the ghost about 6 years ago. 12 years of daily use isn’t that bad to be fair.

I love my Parlux too. It was the first (of many) things that I bought on SH’s recommendation- I’m sure it was in a magazine article, before I knew anything of her online. But the Nuxe, oh no. I remember my husband’s absolute disbelief that I would spend a tenner on lip balm 😳

I'm not in any way suggesting that the Parlux are bad products, just that as a woman who almost never uses a hairdryer (my hair has ranged from full on down to the wood to a chin length bob for the last 20 years, never anything longer) it was a superfluous purchase for me personally.

This is the most difficult question yet  Perhaps by thread 10 we'll be able to understand how this happened.

The excellent chat on here today reminded me of a recent vanity fair article on the illusion of influencing, long but worth the read

Yes 'insecurities' is such a good word in this context. A lot of beauty preys on women's insecurities. Influencers like SH appear to be helping women - and then they point out something you didn't actually realise was a problem but hey! guess what! You can buy something for that! Or just get a 'tweakment!'
(But don't even mildly question this obviously or you are a troll).

Agreed. Genuinely glad the folk who bought it like it. It would have been madness for me to buy one when I maybe dry my hair 10 times a year!😂

Oh mg brilliant. And I thought the St Pimple Insta hagiography was unbeatable today. What in god's name was that idiot India Knight thinking? I actually feel a 'smidge' of sympathy for SH as she was probably hoping it was all slightly dying down. Then here comes along India Mitford charging in again - 'I'll sort it out SH darling, I'll tell the truth. I've deleted all my tweet history so they've got nothing on me'.

Jeez they really just aren't all there are they? You know the blue tickers kept earnestly urging each other in the wake of that snivelfest - 'well we should feel sorry for the skidmarks shouldn't we. They are to be pitied really'. I'm feeling the same patronising pity for them all now.

They just DON'T. bleeping. GET IT. (Thread name???? 😂 😂😂)
Is it known as “doing a Sali?” 😂

I bought the bloody function of beauty shampoo and conditioner because of SH.

Twice.
You have confessed and now you are free 😂
