What do you think the scientifically objective perspective would be?
I wish she had been my chemistry teacher in sixth form.

thought this was an interesting take on the issue
So I was just looking at her critiques on the not so pretty episode about talc. She’s underplaying the danger of talc in beauty products (so a ‘pro-industry’ stance, especially in the context of the show) but doesn’t even bother exploring why use talc in these products at all? What’s the advantage? Even if there’s a small risk why take it if there’s easy replacements?

As for the quote up there, I wouldn’t disagree on the surface but I need concrete examples and in-depth explanations to know for sure.

Reading her blog as well, it comes from a very ‘people don’t understand SCIENCE’ angle, which I don’t appreciate at all. You don’t have to have the technical degree to be able to understand and critique overarching concepts. Her stuff is interesting but like most bloggers and IG personalities out there, even if they’re EXPERTS, it lacks a lot of rigour.

Lolll you witches. I have v similar glasses and my kids call me a serial killer when I wear them. I'm defo going to think of them as my incel bins now.

Nookie Bear totally looks like he'd piss all over the seat and go "grrrraggghhhuuggggghhhh" *punctuated by the sound of his fly being pulled back up* just as he finishes peeing.

A necessary selfie that's definitely about new glasses

You all thought she was showing off something she was wearing didn't you? Ha! Fooled us all! In fact she has sponsorship from Armitage Shanks to get a toilet bowl into every selfie. Nice freestanding modern take on Victoriana there Sali. 👌

She seems to have gone for matchy matchy ones with her husband.
I was going to say! 🥴 The Dan & Sal car windshield sticker is next.

Don't forget to line up your trembly voice actor @Missypissy which won't at all make the whole thing seem 10x more dubious. 👍

I felt a bit bad about posting a link to the series at all for a while, but it raised a lot of issues that I don't think I knew about before. Why is talc containing asbestos in makeup marketed at little girls in Claire's Accessories, why are men being affected by the endocrine disruptors that are in products containing perfume?
Tippi Hedren starting the whole Vietnamese nail industry was a fascinating piece of history.

If Sali wanted to be a real beauty journalist there are so many important things she could be looking at instead of posting idiotic photos and mindless columns in The Guardian.

I’m dying, my husband got his first pair of glasses a couple of weeks ago and they look just like Sali’s. I got the ick and haven’t been able to work out why. What do you think, should I tell him he looks like an incel murderer or just let him live his best #specslife? 😂🙈

She could but there's no money to be made from this. #founder #presstreatment #prsample

There might be a chapter on dealing with this sort of relationship crisis in Sali's new book. How to revive your libido when your husband chooses incel chic frames? Method possibly involves eating a jacket potato and booking in a maintenance shag.

I have clearly touched a bathroom nerve
The toilet in my ensuite is in its own separate room and the rest of the bathroom is sort of open plan into my bedroom (ie no actual door, just a wall separating it) Hard to explain

Yes, because everyone in the house will always remember to shut it.
I can't even get my husband to put the seat down let alone close the lid 🙄

I actually like Sali's frames when they are sunglasses (Aviators?) but just as normal glasses they remind me horribly of

I’ve not watched the series yet, but I’m glad you brought it up. Like you said, I t’s opened up a really interesting discussion about it.

Honesty this why I used to really enjoy the comments under Sali’s column, I always learned more from there than the article.

I loathe gatekeeping of anything which including science. We’re not even talking something that is actually pretty impenetrable to non-specialists. Basic chemistry of cosmetic ingredients should be able to be made easily accessible.

ETA: * includes, * about, dammit

Even people who've actually studied and worked hard for their academic award (and have the student debt to show for it) don't seem to make as big a deal as Sali is over the 'honorary fellowship'
This is what bugs me about honorary degrees generally. I had to quit after a year at a doctorate because my circumstances took an unexpected nosedive and it's unlikely I'll ever get back to it now. People spend years working on them. Never understood how they can just be given away, no matter how accomplished or worthy the recipient. Like @Mselvista said, it's PR.

Yikes. The looming into the camera pose again 😬
