I really miss the old days of blogging. I loved how blogging was hobbyists talking or writing about their latest Boots or wherever haul or products they loved/ liked/ hated, it seems so wholesome and pure now. As soon as companies and PR realised blogging could be commercialised, that was the death of it. They either went on to become 'influencers' or else the good ones disappeared because they were so frustrated with the change to the landscape.

For me, posters on this forum talking about purchases/ product recommendations etc is the closest thing we have to old school blogging.

This is how the ASA define an Ad:
Know when you’re advertising
It’s important to have a clear understanding of when content posted on social media counts as ‘advertising'. If it falls within the ASA’s remit, the CAP Code in its entirety will apply, and there are many different rules that could apply depending on the types of claims in the post, and on the product being advertised.

When a brand gives an influencer a ‘payment’ (i.e. any form of monetary payment, free loan of a product/service, any incentive and/or commission or a product/service has been given free), any resulting posts promoting the brand become subject to consumer protection law enforced by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). When a brand also has editorial control over the content, the ASA can apply the CAP Code as well.

NB - my bold text. ‘Any incentive’ is a wide definition to me.

Sali is shocked about wearing a jumper in September. Wasn't she wearing a long trench coat during the heat wave? I am sure there is more to be shocked by at the moment.

I recently posted a cute pic of my cat on Instagram and immediately got messages from pet accessory sellers who wanted to send me stupid bow ties and neckerchiefs or fuzzy cat beds. I didn't answer. My cat's not an influencer. People with popular accounts must get bombarded with this stuff.

Influencing seems to be strongly regulated in the UK and Germany, compared to the US and, especially, France

Sali is shocked about wearing a jumper in September. Wasn't she wearing a long trench coat during the heat wave? I am sure there is more to be shocked by at the moment.
The bigger question is, why is she always pigeon-toed?

Is it because she is an itty-bitty Thumbelina?

That jumper is $420 (£300) and mostly acrylic and nylon, on top of "distressed". What an idiot. She probably gets zapped every time she touches something. Maybe that's why her hair is standing on end at the crown

Apologies I'm grunking so maybe already addressed, but reader, it's unseasonably warm in the UK today with temperatures around 22 degrees in the South

Why not put some socks on if you can feel the cold, or jeans that fit? Robert Smith form 1983 called, he says keep the jumper it’s not ever going to be fashionable

My friend who lives in Brighton was swimming in the sea today. I’m in the north and it’s been warm here too, would have died in a jumper. Also the ffs is just posturing, it’s not like we’ve been hit by an Arctic blast 🙄

Re the undeclared ADs, I think it's simpler just to assume everything an influencer posts has an ulterior motive. They are just fake, grinning billboards. Trust no one, take no prisoners

If you've constantly got your hand out to brands, why should I believe anything you say, when you've shown you are easily bought? Your opinion means nothing to me

I think you're right. I think the ASA regulations were drawn up for a different time - when bloggers/vloggers were hobbyists who occasionally accepted payment to publicise/endorse a product or service.

Some influencers seem to want to make out that that's still the case. This is how SH described influencer Katie Hayes in her Radio 4 programme last year:

Almost as if the earning money part was just a way of financing her little hobby - rather than influencing being a highly sophisticated and lucrative commercial business.

That is exactly it @Aude.
All these kindly videos sharing makeup advice and recommendations are meant to viewed as a public service, friend to friend. If you question the money making aspect it is seen as distasteful and bullying.
Of course influencers should be allowed to make money from advertising. But stop pretending it is anything other than that - advertising.

So she saved £250 on jeans which don’t fit, £75 on her custom lipstick and £200 plus on a haircut in the past two days.
